As a nurse, I help many patients with oral care and dentures (that's "ireba" in Japanese), and I’m constantly reminded how important teeth are. Without healthy teeth, eating isn’t as fun, speaking gets harder, and yes, even our appearance can change. Did you know adults typically have 32 teeth, including wisdom teeth ("oyashirazu")? But in Japan, I’ve noticed we tend to have fewer natural teeth as we age compared to other countries. Surprising, right? Confession time: I’ve always been prone to cavities, and honestly, I’m not great at brushing or flossing. So I visit the dentist every month for cleanings. It’s become a habit, and now I’ve got 27 teeth left—no wisdom teeth! My goal? To keep them till I’m 80. Even my daughter goes for monthly cleanings now, which makes me so proud as a mom! So, I encourage all of you to take care of your teeth. It’s easy, and those small efforts now will pay off later. Oh, and today’s medical English word is “periodontal disease” or gum disease—perfect for this topic, don’t you think?
