Welcome to The STEM Guys' Life Board Meeting.
Japan gives full-time employees roughly 17–20 paid leave days per year on top of 115 public holidays. Mathematically, that's one day off per month. In practice? It rarely works out that way.
This week, Kurage just used a paid day off — not for anything special, but to avoid losing it before the December reset. And it led to a surprisingly practical insight: don't wait for a reason to take leave. Instead, design it around things that only work on a weekday.
His move: a solo lunch at a ramen shop that has a 45-minute weekend queue. On a Tuesday afternoon? Walked straight in.
There's also a serious debate about when to take leave. Friday off means your post-vacation Monday hits a full five-day week. Monday off means you ease back in after only four days. Wednesday is theoretically best for your body — but hardest to plan around.
Underneath all of this is a structural problem: too many mandatory all-hands meetings make it practically impossible to take leave without consequences. The right to rest exists on paper. The conditions for it often don't.
