#60【ただのトイレじゃダメなの?ジェンダーレストイレ】Is Gender Neutral bathroom Really Necessary?

Haitai people,

There was a controversial style of Gender Neutral Bathroom in Kabukicho, Tokyo. The problem people talked about was how designed user flow, but then a question came up which was do we really need them named 'Gender-Less toilet'? Yes, it is wonderful if there is one that any gender can use mentally and physically safely but how about who has experienced sexual assault before, or kids and young moms? Isn't it just ok go with individual bathrooms.. we lost.

せーの What's up amazing people, this is YASASA
RADIO by Akane and Minami. In this radio, we are going to talk about random topics in
Okinawan Japanese and English. はいたーい グスーよちゅーがなびらー

イエイゴとウチナーグチさんに いっぺーうむさるはなし つづけやんりち
うむとおいびん Gender Neutral Restrooms are individual
stalls that can be used by anyone regardless of their gender identity. These restrooms are
proposed as part of the society that values diversity and inclusivity benefiting sexual
minorities, people with disabilities, and parents with children who may find traditional gender
separated restrooms inconvenient or difficult to use. The gender neutral restroom on the
second floor of the Tokyo Kabukicho Tower is currently a topic of discussion. Within the
same restroom space facing the hallway, there are two stalls for women, two stalls for men,
eight stalls for gender neutral restrooms, and one accessible stall with a shared hand-washing
area. The placement and classification of users for a gender neutral restroom intended to
incorporate diversity has resulted in confusion. Therefore, we will consider the challenges
facing a gender neutral restroom on the second floor of the Tokyo Kabukicho Tower. The first
issue is consideration for diversity. Rather than creating an environment that meets all needs,
it is important to create a selection of environments where people can make choices.
However, by increasing the number of gender neutral restrooms, there is a risk of making an
environment overly uniform and challenging to use. At Kabukicho Tower, restrooms on the floors
were also considered for selection, but confusion arose from mixing various restrooms in one space.
The second issue is that this initiative did not create a sense of safety or security,
but rather generated anxiety and danger. One aspect of danger and anxiety related to restroom
is sexual crimes. Professor Nobuo Komiyama, who specializes in criminology at Risho University,
states that environments where crimes are likely to occur are easy to enter places
and places that are difficult to be seen. Regarding restrooms, gender neutral restrooms
that are accessible to everyone are easy to enter. When they enter an enclosed individual stall,
03:07
it becomes difficult to be seen. On the other hand, to avoid creating opportunities for crime,
it is necessary to clearly separate entrances and divide the approach path.
The third issue is that an explanation of the gender neutral restroom initiative has not
reached many users. This lack of understanding regarding the intention, pictograms,
and location of this new initiative causes anxiety. In terms of the autonomic nerves
system, when the parasympathetic nerve is dominant, that is, when the body is relaxed,
defecation occurs. Therefore, if one is anxious, they will not be able to use the restroom.
From this perspective, it is necessary to create a situation that is objectively safe by thoroughly
avoiding dangerous situations in restrooms and then adapting them to one's preferences in order
to create a sense of security.
The gender neutral restroom at the 2nd floor of the Tokyo Kabukicho Tower is now a hot topic.
The 2nd floor restroom at this tower is a single-room, two-room, male-only, gender-neutral,
eight-room, barrier-free, and one-room restroom. The hand-washing space is shared.
It seems that the location of the gender-neutral restroom, which was taken into account for diversity,
is causing confusion. Therefore, let's think about the issues of the gender-neutral
restroom on the 2nd floor of the Tokyo Kabukicho Tower. The first is consideration for diversity.
When it comes to diversity, it is important to create an environment where you can choose
not to create something that meets all needs, but to create a gender-neutral restroom that
does not question gender, which makes it more efficient and makes it difficult to use.
In the case of the Kabukicho Tower, I think that it was thought to be possible to choose
including the restrooms on other floors, but it caused confusion by mixing various restrooms
in one space.
The second is that this initiative made me feel anxiety and danger, not peace and safety.
06:00
The immediate thought of danger and anxiety in the toilet is sexual crime.
According to Prof. Komiya Nobuo, who specializes in sexual crime, the environment in which
crime is likely to occur is a place where it is easy to enter and a place where it is hard to see.
For example, the gender-less toilet that everyone can use is easy to enter, and it is
difficult to see if you enter a closed private room.
On the contrary, in order not to create a crime opportunity, it is necessary to clearly
separate the entrance and increase the mobility of the approach.
The third is that the explanation of the gender-less toilet initiative has not reached many users.
The anxiety of not knowing the intention, pictogram, arrangement, etc. for such a new
initiative leads to anxiety.
Explanation is because it is not a place to explain when you are anxious because it
functions when you are relaxed, when you have an advantage in self-reliance, that is,
when you are relaxed.
From this point of view, it seems that it is required to thoroughly avoid dangerous
conditions in the toilet, create an objectively safe state, and then take steps to ensure
the safety of each person.
Yeah, I've been sick.
But it's getting better though.
I feel sexy today.
Yeah.
Gender, I don't know, gender-less toilet.
Have you seen this toilet before?
This, like, gender-mixed style toilet?
No.
I've seen all Tamokuteki toilet thing, but it's different, right?
Yeah.
It's got, you know, the men wearing pants and women's skirts combined together, kind
of logo.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
That itself is already bizarre.
I saw somebody's Twitter in the article, and then she was like, it's so scared to go in
there, crowded by men, washing hands.
It's so weird to go through, to go toilet in that crowd, you know what I mean?
I mean, the issue of this Kabukicho toilet is that where people wash hands is in the
middle.
Everyone needs to go through.
I don't think it's an issue of gender-less toilet.
Yeah.
It's just structure problem.
But I also checked the Twitter, the picture of the Kabukicho toilet.
09:09
It's like, I don't want to go there.
First of all, when I go to the toilet, I don't want, like, anyone to see I go poo-pee.
Anyone?
I mean, if it's just a shugo-gata toilet, well, it can help it, but if the men is in
there, I feel awkward to do my private thing.
Me too.
It's like, it's not private.
How about if it's total, you know, room, not even have a gap?
But, I don't like it.
When it's open, like, when I was a student, I didn't care about the sound of poo-pee,
but when I go poo-pee, I get told I'm poo-peeing.
It's like a napkin.
Yeah, yeah.
When it comes to the convenience store, it's like, it's like, it doesn't matter.
Then people really don't care if I go to the men's restroom.
No.
I will do the same thing if the women's bathroom is crowded.
Between men and women.
I prefer
Women's?
Women's toilet.
Yeah, whenever I go to a convenience store's toilet, I would choose women's.
Because the way men use the restroom is dirtier than women.
Obviously.
Splash pee everywhere.
Yeah.
It's not a prejudice, it's a fact.
There are a lot of people who leave the toilet seat up.
There's a lot of pee splashing there.
I don't want to lower it.
I know.
If I feel like I want to do it, I don't care.
Because the toilets at festivals are the same.
Yeah.
I've never been concerned about sexual harassment, but it's just dirty.
12:02
So when I heard about gender-free toilets,
I started thinking about men using that.
It means dirty.
Yeah.
Women might think that.
So
when it comes to
creating any kind of bathroom,
we can't avoid thinking about
how women think.
For men,
maybe
women care too much about the toilet.
So they prefer to use the men's bathroom.
They don't need to care?
Yeah.
But
it's like us.
Yeah.
We women
physically, mentally
doesn't have any issue to go to any kind of bathroom.
Yeah.
But
it seems created for
someone in minority
and parents.
Hmm.
When
we think about this
gender-free toilets,
we
unconsciously
think transgender.
Like it's created
for the people who
is choosing their gender
or they're transforming
from men to women
or women to men.
But
that's just not it.
But the name itself,
genderless,
it reminds me of transgender toilet.
It can be like a grey
sex.
Whichever.
So
the idea of genderless toilet
is connected to
LGBT and diversity.
So
it's created for
those people.
Yeah.
I feel like it's just
someone's idea.
Yeah.
In neutral toilets,
men can use the toilet
attached to the wall
but only women
can use the toilet.
I don't like that.
I don't like that.
Isn't that Kabukicho?
What?
You mean men
can't use the toilet?
I don't think so.
I don't think men want to be seen.
I don't know.
You don't want to be seen.
There's a graph in the bar, right?
Yeah, there is.
15:01
1-1-3.
And you can see it sometimes.
From the side.
And
It's like, excuse me.
I've never seen a big
genderless toilet
but
there's a men's toilet
in the front.
And
there's a men's toilet
in the back.
But
it's okay to use it.
I don't mind.
But
you have to say sorry.
You don't have to.
And
if you can see it,
you can say sorry.
And if it's a dangerous person,
it's scary.
In this situation,
I forgot to lock the door
and
the men's toilet locked the door.
The door was open
so maybe a man came in
and was using the toilet.
So I had to pretend that he wasn't there.
I had to pretend that he wasn't there.
I had to pretend that he wasn't there.
I had to pretend that he wasn't there.
I feel so awkward
when somebody
pee next to me
even if the door isn't in the middle.
I think men also
feeling awkward.
Not so many people
not so many people
be pleased by it.
be pleased by it.
It's been a thing
for a long time.
It's been a thing for a long time.
In this way,
do we need
to make a toilet?
Ryuka-san,
what was the purpose
to make this toilet?
I don't know only about Kabukicho,
but to be honest,
regardless of
gender or age,
anyone can use
the private toilet here
so sexual minorities
or disabled people
and parents with children
For people who feel pain and difficulty, it's a good idea to use it.
It's okay to use a wheelchair toilet.
I'd rather die.
I'd rather die.
But if you look at it in a different way,
people in wheelchairs won't be able to use it.
Well, it's usually open, but...
That's one way to put it.
That's true.
I don't think it's a good idea to use a multi-purpose toilet.
I don't think it's a good idea to use a multi-purpose toilet.
Why do you have to name everything with a name that will bring life to it?
But Kabukicho is famous for having a lot of gay bars.
Are there gay bars?
There's one near here, but...
18:00
I'd like to see the floor of that place.
But Kabukicho is a part of the Hyozan area.
It's just a design mistake.
Maybe it was made by a man.
Without much thought.
There's no consideration.
But women...
Minami is the type of person who doesn't really care about the details.
I think there are a lot of women who feel like they're more sexual.
Sexual?
In this area.
In Kabukicho?
No, that's not it.
Toilets are not for women.
It's for men.
There may be women who are afraid of men.
I think there are people who don't even want to go to the bathroom together.
I think it's okay if you don't go.
It's okay if you don't go.
In the end, if it's a men's toilet, it means it was made.
It's definitely going to be a men's toilet.
I don't think men will feel any danger.
It's hard.
I think it's hard.
But it's not like that.
In the name of the place, there are parents with children.
In the end, it was made for the sexual minority.
In the end, it was made for the sexual minority.
That's right.
You told me about the people raped by gay people.
I thought there was such a thing.
I'm scared.
I don't know about Japan.
In the United States, the description of transgender people in Hollywood is that they are weird and perverted.
In the end, they were either killed or raped.
In the old days, that was the only role.
That image is also ingrained in society.
In real society, it is often based on discrimination and violence.
I feel sorry for them.
It's a story about transgender people.
Sexual crime, job harassment, discrimination, etc.
I feel sorry for them.
Speaking of the toilet, I thought about it several times.
Isn't it better to have a public toilet?
21:01
I think it's good.
There is no other floor.
Was there anyone who complained about it?
Was there anyone who complained about it?
I was wondering, for example,
It looks like a man, but it's still a woman.
It looks like a woman, but it's still a man.
Which bathroom do they use usually?
I have no idea.
You mean people who are in transition to opposite sex?
I was wondering how they feel about other people.
How other people see them?
They probably care how people react when they go through the bathroom.
I don't know.
Maybe they tend to use a public toilet.
Those genderless toilets were made for those kind of people.
I don't know.
It sounds like that, but I don't think they are involved in this plan.
I see.
I don't know.
I don't think they are involved in this plan.
I don't think they are involved in this plan.
I see.
If all the toilets were public toilets, they wouldn't have been angry.
That's true.
It's a recent trend to have people like that on the news.
In the past, people were discriminated against.
But now, they are on the news because of the genderless toilets.
Maybe they didn't care about it.
And there are a lot of women who don't know if they are men or women.
There are a lot of women who don't know if they are men or women.
So they don't care about the genderless toilets.
That's what I think.
I see.
It's hard to design a toilet that makes everyone happy.
I see.
If you think about it, the bathroom is a bathroom.
So it's not good?
It's all private.
One of my friends told me that it's unsafe.
24:03
And it costs a lot.
How about a family toilet?
That's a good idea.
The convenience store is the best.
Even if you scream in a private room, the people around you will help you.
That's because it's an in-store kind of bathroom.
For example, don't use a scary toilet in a park.
It's scary.
It's scary.
It's easy to get in.
I don't know what to do.
It's up to them.
It's up to them what they want to do.
But if you look at it objectively,
You can see the gradation.
Maybe I have a gathering.
So,
To put it in a rude way,
If it's highly complete,
It won't look unnatural.
I see.
If there's something wrong,
There might be people who look at it twice.
That makes them uncomfortable.
Both ways.
You can't start thinking about how other people think
when it comes to your gender issue.
Also, how confident they are.
That's true.
If you dress like a man,
If you go to the women's toilet,
You might look like a woman.
The problem is,
I think the problem is always in the women's toilet.
Because it's a women's toilet,
Your body is still a woman.
But other than that,
All your looks are masculine.
I want to be a man, but...
That's right.
My heart is a man, but I still look like a woman.
Between?
Yes.
But it's not just transgenders.
There are also really cool women like genderfluid.
On the contrary.
Like Ruchel.
27:01
The theory of where to use it.
That's true.
But I don't know.
It's not about where to use it.
I think it's up to you.
That's right.
There are people who don't allow it.
There are people who are narrow-minded.
Trans people who have actually committed crimes.
If it's taken up by the media,
It's not safe.
The women's toilet is in a relaxed state.
If you feel anxious, you can't excrete.
That's right.
In the end, you have to make it a safe place.
It's a little different story.
My mom realized it quickly.
And then nothing happened.
There are a lot of parks like that.
But if it's a mixed toilet,
I don't know who's in the private room.
If an old man and a little girl run into each other,
It's a little scary.
It's just scary.
It can happen.
If you run into each other in the toilet,
If you go to your private room,
If you come in together,
It's scary.
It's scary.
Then it's public.
If a man and a woman are separated,
People will notice that it's strange to go to the women's toilet.
But if it's genderless, it's not strange.
Even if you follow him to the toilet,
He won't notice you from the outside.
But that happens in every toilet.
That's true.
Perverts are perverts.
I don't know how to get a child to use the toilet.
It depends on what you can do.
We have no choice but to go together.
For example, if it's a sign-in,
You might be able to go to the entrance and do it alone.
If it's a park around there,
I'll go inside.
30:01
If you don't have a sign-in, you'll definitely make it a sign-in.
But the toilet for the disabled is designed for them.
For their safety.
But if you think about sexual crime, the button is scarier.
That's right.
But there are toilets for the disabled on both sides.
There's a hole in the middle.
If you open it, it's a toilet.
So you can hear voices.
There are toilets that open in 10 minutes.
That's good.
I think there are toilets at the airport.
If you're in there for a long time, you'll get a call from the manager.
That's all good.
Public facilities are like that.
I've been thinking about genderless toilets.
I don't think it's necessary.
I don't think it's necessary.
It's normal.
I think it's okay to increase the number of toilets.
The level of sanitation in the toilet,
The level of the building,
The level of the company's assets,
The level of care,
It depends on the money.
As for public spaces,
In the face of gender,
Parents have to follow their children.
If something happens, it's dangerous.
It's also a matter of public safety.
In short, it's a genderless toilet that causes unnecessary discussion.
That's true.
I want to know if there are people who actually need this kind of genderless toilet.
Like a multi-purpose toilet.
What makes them feel different?
Is there anyone?
I couldn't make a private room.
I couldn't make a lot of multi-purpose toilets.
It's just a bunch of toilets in one place.
Maybe.
What about Kabukicho?
It's like that.
It's difficult.
It's a dangerous toilet.
It's dangerous.
It's dangerous.
Kabukicho is made up of strange stories.
33:03
For some reason, a lot of people think it's all for LGBT.
It's a waste of money.
They make something they don't even want.
They say, make a different law than that.
It's like a toilet party.
I think it's the other way around.
It's different from the policy of the country and the owner of Kabukicho.
I've never thought so deeply about the gender of the toilet.
That's true.
I wonder why they made it.
Anyone who comes in may think it's a waste of money.
There are some people who make a mistake in the toilet of a man and a woman.
There are people who even make a mistake in the toilet of an old lady.
You can leave all the toilets empty.
That's right.
I don't know if they'll come back soon.
People who feel dangerous don't go to cheap toilets.
When I was in Spain, I went to a club with about 20 friends.
There were about 20 toilets.
One of my friends was very drunk.
He invited me to his club.
I was also very drunk.
I was on the flow.
I was wondering if he was okay.
Then he took me to the toilet.
I said, no, no.
I tried to chase him.
I thought it was annoying.
The cleaning lady came in with a loud voice.
She said, no sex here.
I thought it was safe.
I remembered that.
Is that a public toilet?
Can men and women use it?
I thought about it now.
I think it was public.
It was a public building in a club.
There were a lot of people.
It wasn't like a men's or women's club.
It was like a proper club.
Is it a problem that there are so many toilets?
Is it a place where you can go right away?
That's right.
That's why the toilets in the West look small.
Maybe.
If you sit on the toilet seat and raise your legs, you can pretend you're not there.
The toilet seat is high and the scaffolding is smooth.
36:05
The toilets in the West are the same.
I think it's not safe to go to the toilet in the US.
I agree.
In Japan, you can only get your finger out.
The door is designed to prevent crime.
It's better to make it small.
In Japan, too.
If it's actually small, you can see all the way over there.
It's small because it's this way.
You can see all the way over there.
That's crazy.
But you can ask people to lend you toilet paper.
You can do that.
To the person next to you.
You can do it right away.
In Japan, you have to throw it from above.
In the US, you can do it right away.
When I use the bathroom in America, people don't care about the sound.
They don't have a sound barrier.
They don't care about the sound.
Pee or poo sound.
It's kind of embarrassing for us, but it's Japanese.
They don't care.
Some people probably care, but most people really don't care.
They do it after they go to the bathroom.
That's true.
But I met some American people who were actually impressed by Otohime.
There are a lot of them.
They say it's better than the toilet.
I didn't care because I didn't have a sound barrier.
But when I met Otohime, that's when I started feeling embarrassed.
Maybe.
But when you go back to your country, there are people who do it again.
That makes people relax because they are loud as well.
I don't care.
If everyone was quiet, I would do it too.
But if everyone is loud, I don't care.
But it's not safe.
It is safe.
It is safe, but if something happens, it's kind of hard to escape.
Yeah.
But it's the same with Akisu.
That's true.
But they are people who really care about their private space.
That's true.
Even if you go to America, you can't do it.
I don't care if it's a poop or a pee.
39:00
I don't know.
The sound of the toilet flush is loud too.
It's really loud.
It's as loud as the toilet flush in Japan.
The level is different.
In Japan, people just pull the lever in front of them.
In America, they push it up.
It's like an elementary school.
I think there are people who kick it with their feet.
That's true.
I don't want to touch it.
It's all dirty.
It's dirty.
The tissue is messy too.
In America, there is a pee splash everywhere in the ladies' toilet.
That's true.
It's really like that.
So it's not about men or women.
I think Japanese women are the cleanest.
That's true.
Maybe.
The sound of the toilet flush is loud.
It's quiet.
The dressing room is like a room.
Tokyo is dangerous.
Like Hikarie.
The sound of running water is loud.
That's true.
The size of a small bird.
I sometimes think that Japanese people think the private area is important.
But when they go to the onsen, they are so exposing.
Yeah.
They don't care.
It's so strange.
It's so strange.
When I go to the onsen, everyone is so shy.
Even when I dry my hair.
I understand.
It's impossible.
I never feel uncomfortable going to the onsen.
The ladies wash their hair while taking a shower.
I understand.
When I go to the onsen, everyone sits on the edge of the hot spring.
I can't even do that.
I feel like I'm on stage.
On stage.
I don't mind if no one is watching.
I don't mind if I'm alone.
I'm patient.
I don't care.
I don't care.
When I go to the onsen, I don't mind if no one is watching.
But when I go to the onsen, I don't care.
It's the same.
I thought the onsen was okay.
The onsen is okay.
But it's not that okay.
Are they used to it?
I think so.
They shake their heads a lot.
When they go on a business trip.
There are many foreigners who are embarrassed to go to the onsen.
It makes sense.
I don't care about the sound.
It's a matter of whether they are being watched or not.
42:03
Maybe.
When I went on a business trip with my former company,
they told me that the onsen was available.
I thought it was impossible for me.
I thought it was impossible for my friends.
I went to the onsen with my senior colleagues.
I said I wouldn't go to the onsen.
They suddenly showed their naked bodies.
I still can't believe it.
Normally, they are naked.
But it's still embarrassing.
I understand.
When I go to the onsen with Akane,
I say it's okay.
But they show their naked bodies.
Yes.
It's a little embarrassing.
Yes.
I went to the sauna with my friends.
I couldn't hide it when I went to the sauna.
I went to the sauna.
There was a chair next to me.
I thought I would die if I sat on the chair.
There is a order of the sauna.
I went in this way and that way.
I did it over and over again for several weeks.
I did it with them because they wanted to teach me.
The time I was sitting on the chair.
I didn't sit on the chair in the sauna.
I sat on the chair in the sauna.
I sat on the chair in the sauna.
The time I was sitting on the chair was the most awkward.
I was talking to them face to face.
I was wearing clothes.
It was normal to look at my boobs.
I was supposed to look at their faces.
I was looking at their faces.
I was looking at their faces.
I was looking at their faces.
I was talking to them face to face.
They laughed at me.
I was trying to keep a natural response.
I was looking at their faces.
I could see all their boobs.
I could see their hair.
I thought it was impossible to keep a natural response.
That's right.
There are many people who don't care about men.
That's true.
Do they care?
I haven't seen many men who care about the nakedness of the hot springs.
But they said they looked at me a lot.
Like Norman.
That's not a Japanese face.
I was wondering where they were coming from.
I knew they looked at me a lot.
So I said I looked at them a lot.
But they didn't look at me.
So you should look at them.
45:01
I should look at them.
Then they won't look at me.
By the way, what do you look at?
Their faces.
Do you look at their faces?
If you want to go to a hotel, you should look at their faces.
Then they won't look at me.
Let's do it.
Let's do it.
Okay.
If you look at the hot springs from the side door, you can count how many people are in the room.
You can count how many people are in the room.
I haven't thought about it that much.
Because it's a hot spring chicken.
If you have a friend, you can be brave.
When I go to a hot spring, I am impressed by the person's beautiful butt.
I am impressed by the person's super white skin.
Everyone's skin color is white.
Really.
I don't think I've ever seen a black person.
If you put it that way, you're right.
Don't black people go to hot springs?
Black people are like Akane?
Yes.
Aren't there a lot of white people?
Are there a lot of tourists?
I don't think people like surfers like to go to hot springs.
Is that so?
Tattoos?
Oh, so people with black skin have tattoos.
It's a total prejudice, but people with a free spirit are free.
That's right.
People like that can swim naked in the sea.
That's right.
Really.
Well, then the toilet and the bath.
Safe is the key.
Yes.
That makes you relax.
That's all for today.
Bye.
