This podcast is the result of a genuine human creative process. Every episode concept, educational strategy, narrative structure, and pedagogical direction is designed, written, and carefully curated by real people who are deeply committed to making English learning a human, meaningful experience. Artificial intelligence plays a supporting role in two specific areas: it assists in the refinement and editing of scripts, and it powers the voice synthesis technology (ElevenLabs) that brings our hosts to life with exceptional phonetic clarity and natural pacing. The result is a podcast where human intelligence leads, and AI serves. Every word was thought by a person. Every lesson was designed for you.

How can you disagree in English without sounding aggressive, vague or apologetic? In episode four of Everyday Useful Expressions, Martin and Julia practise four ready-made formulas for thoughtful disagreement.

You will learn:

  • I’m not sure about that — express gentle doubt;
  • I see it differently — introduce another perspective;
  • That’s not necessarily the case — challenge an overgeneralisation;
  • I take your point, but... — acknowledge an argument before presenting a different view.

The web lesson adds five more expressions with meaning, register, examples and active practice in English, Spanish, German, Farsi and French.

Martin, every meeting should begin at 7 in themorning.
I am not sure about that.
People are more productive early.
I see it differently.
Are you disagreeing with me very politely?
Yes, and I have two more expressions ready.
Then this is clearly today's lesson.
Welcome to your English Toolbox. I am Julia.
And I am Martin.
This is Episode 4 of Everyday Useful Expressions,
our series of ready-made English for realsituations.
Today we are learning four natural ways todisagree
without sounding aggressive or dismissive.
Our first expression is, I'm not sure about that.
I'm not sure about that.
It is a gentle way to show doubt or disagreement.
You are not saying the other person is wrong.
You are saying you are not convinced.
For example, I'm not sure about that.
The earlier plan may be safer.
Or, I'm not sure about that.
We have not seen all the figures yet.
Tone matters. Say it calmly, then explain yourreason.
If you only say I'm not sure about that and stop,
it can sound cold.
A short explanation makes the disagreement useful.
Our second expression is, I see it differently.
I see it differently.
This means that you have another interpretation oropinion.
It is direct but still respectful.
For example, I see it differently.
Flexible hours could improve productivity.
Or, I understand your concern, but I see itdifferently.
This expression focuses on perspective,
not personal conflict.
Exactly. Two people can look at the same facts
and see them differently.
Our third expression is, that's not necessarilythe case.
That's not necessarily the case.
We use it when someone presents an idea as alwaystrue,
but you believe there are exceptions or missinginformation.
For example, working from home always reducesteamwork.
That's not necessarily the case.
Some remote teams communicate extremely well.
03:02
Or, expensive equipment always produces betterresults.
That's not necessarily the case.
Skill and preparation also matter.
The word necessarily is important.
You are not saying the idea is completely false.
You are saying it is not true in every situation.
Our fourth expression is especially useful whenyou partly agree.
I take your point, but...
I take your point, but...
It means, I understand your argument,
but I still have a different view or concern.
For example, I take your point,
but a 7 o'clock meeting would be difficult forparents.
Or, I take your point,
but we should test the idea before changing thewhole system.
This expression acknowledges the other person
before introducing a contrast.
It is excellent for meetings, discussions, andthoughtful conversations.
Be careful not to use the first half dishonestly.
If you say, I take your point,
you should genuinely understand what the otherperson means.
Let us compare all four expressions.
I'm not sure about that expresses gentle doubt.
I see it differently introduces anotherperspective.
That's not necessarily the case challenges ageneral claim.
And, I take your point, but...
It recognizes part of an argument beforepresenting a different view.
Time for a quick challenge.
Choose the most natural response before we answer.
Situation 1
Someone says that online learning never works
and you want to mention successful students.
That's not necessarily the case.
Situation 2
You understand your colleague's concern,
but you want to suggest a trial period.
I take your point, but we could test it for onemonth.
Situation 3
You have a different interpretation of the sameresults.
I see it differently.
Situation 4
A friend makes a suggestion
and you want to express gentle doubt beforeexplaining why.
I'm not sure about that.
Now practice one complete response.
Begin with...
I take your point, but...
Remember, polite disagreement is not about hidingyour opinion.
It is about making space for both the relationshipand the idea.
On the episode page at yourenglishtoolbox.com,
you will find five additional expressions forpolite disagreement.
Each one includes its meaning, tone, two examples,
06:05
and active practice in all our supportedlanguages.
The direct link is in the episode description.
Now, Julia, about those 7 o'clock meetings.
They would make the whole team more productive.
I take your point, but half the team would stillbe asleep.
That's not necessarily the case.
You are practicing the expressions now.
I see it differently.
I am defending an excellent idea.
I'm not sure about that.
Very good. We may disagree, but the English isperfect.
See you next time, friends.
Goodbye.
