🌏 For our international listeners:
Welcome to The STEM Guys' Life Board Meeting.
Recorded on December 30th, over aïoli and wine — the first ever in-person session.
The topic: what actually makes New Year's different from every other long holiday?
Japan has four major holiday blocks per year. But New Year's, Tomato argues, has a gravity the others lack. It pulls in December and doesn't let go until mid-January. The number resets from 12 to 1. The year changes. And something in the brain says: now is when things start over.
Here's the trap: most people treat that feeling as an invitation to set goals about things they haven't started yet. "This year I'll study for the exam" — that's 1 out of 100 steps completed, with no momentum behind it. Three days in, it's over.
The alternative: continuity. The number changes, but your life doesn't. The days since you were born are unbroken. So instead of waiting for New Year's to begin something, set yourself up to complete something in January — and use that completion as the launch pad for what comes next.
Book the exam in advance. Do the preparation before December ends. Walk into the new year already in motion.
You can't serve mapo tofu and Shaoxing wine when the table is set for pasta and Chianti. The flow has to make sense. That applies to years too.
Closing note: Confucius said "at thirty, I stood firm." Neither host is quite there yet. But thirty is coming — and 29 is when the groundwork gets laid.
