This podcast is created through a human-led editorial process. Artificial intelligence supports script development and editing, while ElevenLabs provides the synthetic voices of our hosts. Human judgement leads the process; technology supports its production.

Can you understand an expression, repeat it naturally and recognise the same idea in different words? In this weekly recap, Peter turns this week’s three short episodes into one focused vocabulary and shadowing workout.

The two-sentence game is simple:

  • Peter says a short, natural sentence containing one target expression.
  • You get three seconds of silence to shadow it aloud and copy the pronunciation, rhythm and stress.
  • Peter gives you a second sentence with the same meaning but different vocabulary, so you can confirm the meaning without translating.

You will review all sixteen learning items from this week:

Communication idioms:

  • get straight to the point;
  • beat around the bush;
  • read between the lines;
  • keep someone posted.

Precise words for describing problems:

  • minor;
  • serious;
  • urgent.

Natural ways to ask for help from the audio lesson:

  • Could you give me a hand?;
  • Would you mind…?;
  • I could use some help with…;
  • I’d appreciate it if you could…

Extra requests from the web lesson:

  • Could you help me out with…?;
  • Is there any chance you could…?;
  • Would you be able to…?;
  • Could I ask you a favour?;
  • I was wondering if you could…

Listen once for meaning. Then play the episode again and begin repeating as soon as Peter speaks, using the three-second silence to finish each sentence. The alternative sentence that follows gives you immediate feedback and strengthens active recall.

Welcome to your English Toolbox. I am Peter. Todaywe are turning this week's three short
episodes into one vocabulary and shadowingworkout. We will review all 16 learning items,
four communication idioms, three precise words fordescribing problems,
and nine natural ways to ask for help. Five of therequests for help appeared as extra
expressions in the web lesson. This episode willhelp you retrieve the language, say it aloud,
and recognize the same idea in different words.Here is the two-sentence game. First,
I will say a short, natural sentence containingone item from this week. Then you will hear four
seconds of silence. Use that silence to shadow thesentence aloud. Copy my pronunciation,
rhythm, and stress as closely as you can. Afterthe pause, I will say a second sentence with the
same meaning but different vocabulary. Thatparaphrase is your meaning check,
so you can confirm the idea without translating.On your first listen, focus on meaning.
On your second listen, begin repeating as soon asI start speaking and try to follow my voice
more closely. Ready? Let us begin. Part one. Fourcommunication idioms.
Pair one. Let me get straight to the point. Wecannot finish by Friday. Let me say the main
thing immediately. We cannot finish by Friday.Pair two. The manager beat around the bush
about the delayed launch. The manager avoidedexplaining the delay directly. Pair three.
Reading between the lines. Her reply is a politerefusal. Her answer does not say no directly,
but the clues reveal her real meaning. Please keepme posted on any changes to the plan.
03:13
Please continue giving me the latest informationwhenever the plan changes.
Part two. Minor, serious, and urgent. Remember thekey distinction. Minor describes limited
consequences, serious describes severity, andurgent describes the need to act quickly.
Pair five. The missing comma caused only a minorproblem. The problem was small,
had limited consequences, and was easy to correct.Pair six. Losing our main funding
would be a serious problem. Losing that moneycould have severe and important consequences
for the organization. Pair seven. The leak besidethe electrical socket is urgent.
Leak needs immediate attention and cannot safelywait. Part three. Nine natural ways to ask for
help. The first four expressions came from theaudio lesson. The final five were the extra
expressions available on the episode page. Listenfor how the language changes from friendly
and direct to gentle, tentative, or more formal.Pair eight. Could you give me a hand
setting up these chairs? Could you help me arrangethese chairs? Would you mind checking
these figures before the meeting? Could you pleasecheck these figures before the meeting?
Pair ten. I could use some help with this report.I would benefit from some assistance
06:01
with this report. I'd appreciate it if you couldsend the schedule by noon. I would be grateful
if you could send the revised timetable before 12o'clock. Move to the five expressions from the
web lesson. Pair 12. Could you help me out withthis online form? Could you help me complete
this online form? Thirteen. Is there any chanceyou could pick me up after work?
Would it be possible for you to collect me when Ifinish work? Fourteen. Would you be able to
join the call at three? Would it be possible foryou to take part in the three o'clock call?
I ask you a favor. Ask you to help me withsomething. Pair sixteen. I was wondering
if you could cover my shift on Friday. I wanted toask politely whether you could
work my Friday shift for me. You have completedall sixteen pairs. You reviewed four communication
idioms, three precise words for problems, and ninenatural ways to ask for help.
Five of those requests came from the extra weblesson. Notice that the second sentence
did not simply translate the first. It rebuilt thesame idea using different English words.
That is what makes this both a vocabulary reviewand a shadowing workout. You practice
pronunciation,
but you also strengthen retrieval and flexibleunderstanding. Try the episode again tomorrow.
This time, begin repeating as soon as I startspeaking and use the silence to complete the
09:01
sentence. If four seconds feels too short, choosea slower version on the episode page.
If it feels comfortable, move to a faster versionand keep the same natural rhythm.
At yourenglishtoolbox.com, you can read every pairwhile you practice and choose the listening
speed that matches your level. One idea, twosentences, and one stronger English voice.
I am Peter. Thank you for practicing with me. Seeyou in the next episode.
