Are You the Person You Think You Are? | WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST? — Season 2, Episode 03

What if the person you believe yourself to be is only a version of yourself — carefully built from memories, explanations, and things you prefer to believe?

You think you are honest. But do you remember every time you avoided the truth?

You consider yourself patient. But how do you behave when someone tests your limits?

You believe you are a good person. But what happens when your actions contradict that belief?

We all carry an image of ourselves. It tells us who we are, what we value, and how we behave. But is that image based on reality — or on the story we have learned to tell ourselves?

In the third episode of Season 2, we explore the gap between self-image and actual behavior.

Because believing you know yourself is not the same as seeing yourself clearly.

And sometimes, the person you are most reluctant to question is yourself.

• Why we build stories about who we are
• How our memories protect our self-image
• Why intentions don't always match behavior
• What difficult situations reveal about our character
• Why different sides of our personality emerge in different situations
• How repeated choices can reveal more than our own explanations
• What it means to accept the parts of ourselves we would rather ignore

If your actions repeatedly contradicted the person you believe yourself to be, which would you trust — your image of yourself or the evidence of your own behavior?

And are you ready to discover that you may not know yourself as well as you think?

You may know exactly who you are, and still becompletely wrong.
You have a picture of yourself. Maybe you'repatient, honest, independent. Maybe you believe
you're the kind of person who always stands by thepeople you love. That picture feels familiar.
It has been with you for years. And because itfeels familiar, you rarely question it.
But here's something uncomfortable. Knowing thestory you tell about yourself is not the same
as knowing the person you actually are. We allhave a version of ourselves that
lives in our minds. A version built from memories, intentions, explanations,
and the things we'd like to believe. But whathappens when that version doesn't match reality?
What if the person you think you are is only partof the truth?
Think about the words you use to describeyourself.
I'm a good listener. I'm not the kind of personwho holds a grudge.
I always tell the truth. These statements may besincere,
but they can also become a kind of protection. When you believe you're a good person,
it's easier to explain away the moments when youhurt someone. When you see yourself as honest,
you may remember the truth you told, and forgetthe truth you avoided.
We don't necessarily invent these stories onpurpose. Often, we simply remember the moments
that support them. And slowly, our self-imagebecomes less like a mirror and more like an
edited photograph. The question isn't whether yourstory is completely false. It's whether
you've left out the parts of yourself you don'twant to see. There's a difference between who
you believe you are and how you behave when lifebecomes difficult. It's easy to call yourself
generous when you have enough. It's easy to callyourself patient when nothing is testing you.
It's easy to believe you're brave when there'snothing to lose. But pressure has a way of
revealing things. How do you behave when you'reexhausted? When someone challenges your pride?
When telling the truth might cost you something? These moments don't necessarily define your
entire character. One mistake doesn't eraseeverything good about you. But repeated choices
can tell you something your self-image cannot.Sometimes, the person you are under pressure
is a person you've never really taken the time tounderstand. And maybe that's where self-knowledge
begins. Not with what you say about yourself, butwith what you notice when things get hard.
Maybe you've noticed that you're not exactly thesame person with everyone.
With one friend, you're confident. With yourfamily, you're quiet. At work, you're careful.
Alone, you're someone else entirely. Does thatmean you're pretending? Not necessarily.
People respond to different situations. Differentrelationships bring out different parts of us.
And sometimes, those parts seem to contradict eachother. The danger is assuming that only
one version is real, usually the version we likebest. But what if you're not a single,
perfectly consistent identity? What ifunderstanding yourself means accepting
that you can be kind and selfish, confident andafraid, sincere and sometimes defensive?
Not as an excuse. As a more honest picture ofbeing human.
Perhaps knowing yourself doesn't mean finding onesimple answer.
Perhaps it means being willing to see the wholepicture.
So, how do you begin to know who you really are?
Maybe you start by paying attention. Not only toyour intentions, but to your actions.
Not only to the moments you're proud of, but tothe moments you keep explaining away.
Notice what you do when nobody is watching. Noticewhat you defend.
Notice what you repeat, even when you promiseyourself you'll change.
And try not to turn every discovery into ajudgment.
Seeing yourself clearly doesn't mean decidingyou're a good person or a bad person.
It means giving up the comfort of pretending youalready know.
Because the person you think you are may be real, but it may not be the whole truth.
So, here's the question. Are you truly the personyou believe yourself to be?
Or are you still discovering who you are?
This is What Would You Trust? I'm Jonah Whitmore.
