Can You Trust What You Feel? | WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST? — Episode 22

Have you ever felt that something was wrong… even when everything seemed perfectly fine?

Someone smiles at you. They tell you everything is okay. Nothing seems unusual. But something about the moment feels different.

You can't explain it. You just have a feeling.

And then, days later, you discover that something really was being hidden from you.

Suddenly, you remember that feeling and think: I knew it.

But did you really know? Or does knowing how the story ends change the way you remember the beginning?

Can you trust what you feel?

In Episode 22 of WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST?, we continue exploring trust by examining something deeply personal: our own emotions and instincts.

Imagine receiving a short message from someone you care about. One person reads it and feels reassured. Another reads exactly the same words and feels rejected.

The message hasn't changed. But its meaning has.

Perhaps an earlier betrayal has made someone more cautious. Perhaps the fear of losing a person makes an ordinary silence feel like a warning. A feeling becomes an explanation, and that explanation begins to look like evidence.

But feeling rejected doesn't necessarily mean someone has rejected you. Feeling guilty doesn't always mean you've done something wrong. And feeling certain doesn't mean you're right.

Our emotions can alert us to things we haven't consciously understood. They can also be influenced by memory, fear, and expectation.

The challenge isn't to ignore what you feel. It's to listen without immediately accepting every conclusion your feelings suggest.

A feeling can tell you where to look. It can't always tell you what you'll find.

What am I feeling — and what makes me believe it means what I think it means?

Perhaps that small pause can help you understand a situation before deciding what to believe.

Have you ever felt that something was wrong, evenwhen everything seemed perfectly fine?
Someone tells you they're happy to see you. Theysmile, they ask how you've been. But something
feels different. You can't explain it. Maybe it'sthe way they look at you. Maybe it's a
pause before they answer. You tell yourself you'reimagining things. And then, days later,
you discover they were hiding something from you.Suddenly, you remember that feeling,
and you think, I knew it! But did you really know?Or are you giving an old feeling a new meaning
because you already know how the story ends? That's the strange thing about our emotions.
Sometimes, they notice something before weconsciously understand it. And sometimes,
they make us suspicious of things that aren'tdangerous at all. The feeling is real, but the
explanation might be wrong. So how do you knowwhen to trust your instincts? And when should
you stop and question them? Imagine receiving ashort message from someone you care about.
Just a few words. Nothing unusual. You read it andfeel reassured. Someone else receives exactly
the same message from someone they care about. They read it and feel rejected. The words haven't
changed, but the meaning has. Maybe the secondperson remembers a previous betrayal. Maybethey're
afraid of losing someone important. A simplemessage becomes something more. They're losing
interest. Something has changed. I'm about to gethurt again. And suddenly, a feeling starts to look
like evidence. But feeling rejected doesn'tnecessarily mean someone has rejected you.
Feeling guilty doesn't always mean you've donesomething wrong. And feeling certain doesn't mean
you're right. Think about fear. Sometimes, fearwarns us about something we've failed to notice.
Other times, it comes from an old experience thathas nothing to do with what's happening now.
The problem is that both can feel exactly thesame. Your body doesn't hand you an explanation.
It gives you a reaction. And you have to work outwhat that reaction means.
So, should you stop trusting your feelings? Idon't think so. Feelings matter. Fear can tell youto
slow down. Anger can reveal that something feelsunfair. Sadness can show you how much you've lost.
Ignoring those feelings doesn't make you morerational. But believing everything they tell you
doesn't make you wiser either. A feeling can tellyou where to look. It can't always tell you what
you'll find. Think about a day when everythinggoes wrong. A delayed reply feels like rejection.
A careless remark feels like an insult. Someone'ssilence seems to confirm your worst suspicions.
Then you sleep, wake up the next morning, and seethings differently. The messages are the same.
The people haven't changed. But your experience ofthem has. So, what changed? Perhaps your emotional
03:04
state was influencing the story you told yourselfabout the world. And perhaps yesterday's certainty
wasn't quite as reliable as it felt. This doesn'tmean your feelings are useless. It means you can
listen to them without immediately accepting theirexplanation. You can feel afraid and still ask
whether you're in danger. You can feel hurt andstill consider whether someone intended to hurt
you. You can trust your instincts enough to payattention, without trusting them so completely
that you stop asking questions. Maybe the realquestion isn't whether you can trust what you
feel. Maybe it's whether you can make room foryour feelings and your judgment at the same time.
The next time something feels wrong, pause. Don'tdismiss the feeling. But don't immediately turn
it into a fact. Ask yourself, what am I feeling? And then, what makes me believe it means what I
think it means? Perhaps your first instinct willturn out to be right. Perhaps you'll discover that
fear, memory, or expectation has changed the wayyou see the situation. Either way, you've given
yourself something valuable. A chance tounderstand before you decide. Because the feelingbelongs to
you. But the truth may be larger than the feeling. So, let me ask you something. Have you ever been
absolutely certain about what you felt, only todiscover that you had misunderstood what was
really happening? And when that happens, what doyou trust next? Your feelings, your reasoning,
or the evidence you can finally see? This is WhatWould You Trust?
In the next episode, we'll explore a differentkind of uncertainty. What happens when someone
you trust has lied to you? Can trust survive whenthe truth finally comes out? Until then,
ask yourself, can you trust what you feel?
