CHAPTER 3 ビーファ On a particularly bleak day where everything
he touched in a lab threw tantrums, Yuki returned home to his usual soylent which felt more disgusting
than he remembered.
Have I been eating this stuff? he thought.
He stared at the stack of untouched laundry, the tsundoku he haven't touched in months,
and the empty apartment.
He felt a biting loneliness, followed by a quiet thought.
Know what?
I'm gonna treat myself.
He grabbed his coat and walked briskly to the restaurant.
As he stepped inside, he was greeted by the rich aroma of spices and frying oil.
The restaurant was mostly empty except for the waiter on her phone.
Her Santa hat reminds him that it was Christmas Eve.
Yuki ordered a beef pho with spring rolls on the side.
When the steaming bowl of noodle arrived, Yuki took his first slurp and closed his eyes.
The broth was rich and flavorful, fresh coriander and bean sprouts wilting in a broth, waiting
to be eaten.
Crunchy, savory, and piping hot spring rolls.
It wasn't just food.
It was a hug on a plate.
For the first time in weeks, he felt alive.
Would you like some dessert?
The waiter asked as she took away his bowl.
I'll have the mango sticky rice, Yuki said without an ounce of hesitation.
As he savored each bite of velvety coconut sticky rice, he realized something.
He had been so focused on achieving, on pushing forward, that he had forgotten how to simply
be.
Taking this moment for himself didn't make him selfish or lazy.
It just made him human.
