Do you remember your teachers?

The first English teacher was when I was in junior high.

And he, well, he was a good teacher.
I'd say he was a good teacher, but he didn't, his English wasn't like the native level.
But he knows the grammars, he knows the words, and he knows how to, he knows how to pronounce
words, you know.

I'm not sure, I don't know how to take that.
He knows how to pronounce.

So, he was a good teacher.
He had the knowledge.

Even though he couldn't, you know, speak like native English speakers, but, you know.

Being a teacher is a little different thing, yeah?

So, that's what I remember.

But he was, as he was ojisan, and his pronunciation was obviously really Japanese English, so
everybody was like, nah.
What the fuck are you saying?
Everybody was like, kind of, you know.
But he was a good teacher.
You know.
Was it about how he taught?
Yeah, yeah.
Like, he knows the culture and things and everything, so he wanted to do in, like, for example,

For example, like, open up the class with saying, okay, let's get started.
Oh, so people would, everyone would say, let's get started?
No.
Mr. Ito would say, in every classroom, he opens with this.

And then, hello, everybody.
How are you, Mr. Something, something.
And then he opens up like that.
I see.
So, it's conversation.
Yeah.
Please open the textbook, the page, something, something.
And then he goes like that.

And I understand that.
Yeah, I mean, it doesn't, it kind of feels like an average teacher.
Yeah.

And now I know, and at the moment, too, the pronunciation isn't everything, right?
Yeah.
It's just one element.
Uh-huh.
But for junior high students in Japan, like, the way he spoke was like, okay, let's get
started.
Or even worse than this.
So, he had a Japanese accent.
Really Japanese accent.
And that's what makes students...
Be like...

Not taken seriously?

So, that was happening in the classroom.

You felt that he was not respected.

But he was a good teacher.

And the pronunciation was one, and the biggest, I'd say, element for the students.

There was one girl in my classroom.
She went to Boston for a year.

And then she returns back to the same junior high.
And she kind of speaks, like, you know, English.

Pronunciation, good.

And she tries to kind of beat him.

And, yeah.
That was interesting.
What was the atmosphere like?
Like, how would she try to, like, challenge him?
I mean, she was kind of a popular person in our classroom.

So, everybody was on her side.

And also, she kind of needed to, like, prove that she was in Boston, kind of.
She wanted to show the ability, kind of.
I see.
At the same time.

When Mr. Ito asked some questions for her, and she replied in, like, not one sentence,
but she's going to speak.
I see.
You know.

Well, you know, kind of like that.
Mr. Itoとの思い出

And using some, like, difficult words.

The sentences that we hadn't learned yet.
