Welcome to Kevin's English Room Podcast.
Hey guys, how's it going?
I have a question about the gym.
ジム? Okay, the training gym.
You know the machine where there's two racks.
And you can set the highest to the lowest.
And then you attach many attachments.
Yes, yes, yes.
You know that one?
I don't know what's the name of that machine, butyes.
So yeah, I have a question about that.
If you're using one side, what's the manner of theother side?
Do other people use it?
Or if you're using one side, you're using thewhole thing?
Well, I think if you're using one side, that meansyou're using the whole machine, I guess.
Okay.
That's true.
If you're only using the one side, then I can usethe other side.
Yeah.
Yeah, it's true.
I was at the gym the other day.
I was using one side, and the other guy came.
He started using the other side, and I was like, whoa.
Whoa, this guy right here.
So I was like, I talked to him.
I was like, hey, I think the manner here is thatif I'm using here,
I think it's thought of as using the whole thing.
He's like, okay, sure.
That happened.
So I was in Hawaii several weeks ago.
And in Hawaii, that same machine was there, andpeople were using each side.
Okay.
Yeah.
So I was like, whoa.
You share it?
That was new.
So I was like, wait, maybe I was wrong about thatculture.
So I was like, what do you think the culture is?
Wow.
No, I'm on the same side as yours.
Okay, okay.
I think it's like if you're using the one side, that means you're owning the whole machine.
Oh, yeah, right, right, right.
And then if somebody comes and start using theother side, I will be like surprised.
You're sure? Like, really, man?
Yeah.
I think that's the general Japanese consensus ofthe culture, right?
I do think so because it's like, first of all, it's too close.
Right, you do get very close.
Yeah.
You're like two steps away from you, right?
Right, right.
Yeah, it's pretty close.
And also, that's one machine.
Yeah.
It's not like two benches very close together.
It's just one attached machine.
Yeah, so I think we have the common sense, Iguess.
At least in this country, right?
Yeah, I think so.
Okay, all right.
I think so.
Second question about the gym manners.
Let's say there's a dumbbell, right?
There's a dumbbell rack, right?
All these different weights of dumbbells.
03:02
What do you think the manner is on using multipledumbbells?
Okay.
Multiple different weights of the dumbbells.
So there's a guy in the, what do you call that?
You know, the foldable bench, right?
There's a guy using the 10 kilo.
I don't know if that's a kilo.
I don't know.
There's a 10 kilo.
The two sets of 10 kilo, right?
A set of 10 kilo.
And then another set of 14 kilos.
I see.
Boom, boom.
And then right now, he's using the 16.
Yeah.
And he's keeping the 10 and the 14 to himselfright next to him.
So he has six dumbbells.
He has six dumbbells.
There's none in the rack.
Yeah.
So if I wanted to use the 10, I would have to waitfor him to put it back on the rack, even though he's not using it right now.
Yeah.
What do you think the manner is on that?
That's not good manner, I think.
You have to, if you don't use for your, like forthat set, you have to like put it back to therack.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I don't think like keeping six dumbbells for one.
Too much, right?
That's too much.
Yeah, I agree.
I think so.
Yeah.
You have right to ask him, can I use this one?
If you don't use it.
What do you think is the correct way to approachsomebody who's doing that?
How would you say it?
これ使ってなかったら使わせてもらってもいいですか?
I don't want to cause any trouble here.
I understand.
I don't want to be like, I don't want to likeattack him.
Yeah.
We're in the gym.
Right.
We don't.
Right.
They're like, you know, in the mood.
Like the adrenaline is right there.
Right.
So like, I don't want to cause any fights ortroubles.
I do want to go easy.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
But yeah, you have the right, I guess.
Okay.
Having like six dumbbells at the same time islike, it's out of the rule.
Okay.
I don't know what to do when people are doing, youknow, a little bit of a bad manners in the gym.
Like, should I tell them?
Or like, should I tell the employee?
Or like, should I tell the employee?
Or am I being like too much of a dick here?
I don't know.
Like, it's just one.
Let's say a guy's using two sets of dumbbells,right?
And he's only using one.
I mean, am I doing too much?
If I go tell the employee, like, hey, I want touse this 14 dumbbell, but he has two.
Can you tell him?
Yeah.
I believe I've never told somebody things likethat in the gym.
Yeah.
But twice, I think, the other guy came to me andjust told me something.
06:01
Okay.
I was, so I didn't know the rule of like, I don'tknow, like 15 minute rule or 20 minute rule.
Yeah, yeah.
And you have to write when you're going to finish.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
I didn't know that was a new gym for me.
And I didn't write those things that I was using.
And then this guy came to me and just...
And then I was like, oh, I'm so sorry.
I am leaving.
How long have you been sitting in that spot?
Well, pretty, like 10 minutes.
Okay, all right.
So I was within the range.
Okay, okay.
I had still like, I don't know, 5, 10 minutes, butI left.
Okay.
Because I didn't write the times and everything.
Right.
You were in the wrong.
Yeah.
So I was like, oh, I'm sorry.
I leave.
Don't worry.
Yeah, go ahead, man.
Was he a little bit like aggressive?
Was he look a little bit like angry?
Low key?
Yeah.
Okay.
And he was going to school.
He was buff and like wearing some, you know, like,I don't know.
Tank top?
Tank top.
Okay.
Drinking some, I don't know, weird something.
Yeah.
Okay.
But I understand I was wrong, so.
Yeah.
You know.
Right.
No fight.
Okay.
Nothing happened.
I just, I didn't feel bad, like uncomfortable.
He has, oh, yes, that's true.
I was wrong.
Right, right, right, right.
Yeah.
But I mean, you're somebody who understands.
Yeah.
That, you know, you have to follow the rules.
Yes, yes.
And like, so like, it was great that it was youthat was there, right?
It's true.
Like, you know, I can imagine, you know, if thesame guy was right there.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Like the two same characters like, you know, crashinto each other.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
It's true.
Kind of get a little bit ugly, right?
It's true.
Yeah.
It's kind of scary there.
What do you think the manner is on like the moanings of the book?
Okay.
You know, everybody moans.
So many people moans in the game.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Oh.
Too much?
Oh.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
What do you think about that?
I get a little bit uncomfortable if a guy is justmoaning too much.
Yeah.
I understand.
Yeah.
I understand.
I know there are some guys that's like doing toomuch like.
Right.
I'm scared.
Yeah.
I'm surprised.
I'm scared like.
I'm scared too.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
They're loud.
Right.
Yeah.
And they always slam their gears on the ground.
That's something I don't like.
That's a little bit of a bad manners, I would say.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
You know.
09:00
I think many gyms, they write on the wall like, hey, take care.
Yeah.
Right.
Like, you know, do, you know, use it carefully.
Yeah.
Don't slam it on the wall.
Don't slam it on the ground.
Yeah.
It sounds like and it looks like you're likeshowing something to other people.
Right.
You're putting on a show.
Yeah.
I feel uncomfortable.
I do.
I do.
I do.
What's the, you know, what kind of gyms do youthink has the best manners?
Well, I think the gold gym.
Gold gym?
I've never been to a gold gym.
Oh, you should then.
Yeah.
How much is gold gym monthly?
Oh, monthly?
1万円ぐらい。
Oh, man.
The 24-hour gyms that, you know, like the Joyfitor like anytime.
It's like 4,000 or something.
4,000 something, right?
5,000.
5,000 something.
You know, compared to that.
Yeah.
What's, is there any other benefits you get bybeing in the gold gym, you know, compared to thoseJoyfits?
Yeah.
So, first of all, it's big.
Okay.
Way bigger than those in the buildings, you know, like.
The city.
So, you don't have to like wait.
Well, sometimes it's crowded, but generally youcan use the machines that you want to use.
Usually not occupied.
You don't have to wait in lines and things.
I see.
And machines are clean, very new, looks expensive.
Okay.
Yeah, looks fancy.
Looks great.
And you have many machines.
Oh, okay.
You know, the ones like you do this.
You have this, the general one.
Yeah.
You have like this.
A little bit of the angle.
Yeah, something like, I don't know, you have likethis one.
So, I guess it is different.
Yeah, you can choose.
It's fun.
Oh, wow.
Yeah.
Okay.
And also you have bath.
Oh, I see.
You have shower rooms.
Like sauna.
Yeah, sauna.
Okay.
Sometimes you have pools.
Oh, wow.
You can swim.
It's great.
You have...
And there are many very professionals training.
Like people who goes to like the contests.
And I see.
So, it's something good.
Like you, you know, it feels like you're part ofthem.
I see.
Like it motivates you.
Yes, yes, yes.
So, it feels nice.
Yeah.
I see.
So, it's fun.
All right.
I got to check that out.
And not to mention they're all very mannerful.
Yes.
Yeah.
That is very, the biggest thing, I think.
They're very polite.
Yeah.
What would happen if somebody is not, you know, acting very mannerful in a gold gym?
What do you think would happen?
How would people handle that situation, do youthink?
So, first of all, many staffs in the gym.
12:02
Okay.
Like professionals, like honestly.
I see.
You know, the guys, you know.
The top dogs.
Yes.
Like, I don't know, like always three, four guysin the gym.
Just walking around.
Walking around and seeing, like, what's up?
Wow.
And then so, if there's a bad manner guy and then,I don't know, like, punch it?
Physically assault him?
I don't know.
Too scary.
But, okay, so it's like staffs are kind ofpolicing around.
So, they cheat the environment.
Wow.
Like, if you're, like, struggling, like, you don'tknow how to use the machine, they, like, touchthis guy and, like, help you.
Wow.
Great energy.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
It's great energy.
Yeah.
Okay.
Wow.
Yeah.
And you have, like, one-time tickets or something.
Oh, okay.
So, it's, like, you can just try for yourself, seehow you like it.
Yes, yes, yes.
How occupied are the swimming pools?
I want to do that, too.
Is it not very crowded?
You don't go there?
I don't go there.
Okay.
And it depends on the time.
Sometimes they do, like, school things, like, lesson things.
Like kids?
Yeah, kids and, like, you know, some, like, situwalking or something.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
You know.
So, you need to avoid that timing, but...
I see.
I don't think it's that crowded.
Okay.
Yeah.
But it's kind of rare.
Not every Go Gym has pools.
Okay.
So, you have to choose.
So, when the staffs are walking around saying hito everybody, is it, like, I want to, you know, I'm not that much of an extrovert.
Yeah.
Like, I want to put my headphones on, you know, just be in my own world.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Do I have to, like, do they pop you out of thebubble and just say hi?
Or is it, like, can I just keep it to myself?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Can I be in my own world?
Is that possible?
No, for people like you, they just see you andthen just go over.
Oh, okay, okay.
They're not going to, like, start, like, hey, areyou good?
Oh, okay, okay.
And, like, have a conversation.
Oh, okay.
Yes, yeah.
So, if I don't make eye contact, I don't have tosay anything.
Yes, yes, yes.
Okay.
Only if I'm, like, you know, transferring betweenmachines, I walk by them, they'll be like, hey.
Maybe, yeah.
Okay, all right.
I understand.
Yeah, I mean, I guess I'll give it a shot.
You know, it sounds fun.
Right.
People say it's Disneyland.
For trainees.
Okay.
Yeah, especially they have, like, bigger gold gyms.
You know, some gold gyms are, like, very big.
You have, like, crazy amount of machines.
I see.
It's like Florida Disney World.
Yes, yes, yes.
You're going to need, like, a week to sort offigure all this out.
What's the biggest gym?
What's the biggest gold gym in Japan?
15:00
I think it's one in Nishikasai.
Okay.
Or somewhere like that.
Nishikasai.
Yeah, I've been there with my brother for severaltimes.
They have, like, two, three huge gyms.
What do you mean?
Two, three huge gyms in one gym?
No, it's three different gyms.
Oh, okay.
Very close.
It's, like, the east side of Tokyo.
In between Chiba and Tokyo, they have three, like, famous big gold gyms.
I see, I see, I see.
Yeah.
It was fun.
It was huge.
It was big. Oh, man.
Is it, like, multiple floors?
Yes, yes.
Oh, my God.
Wow.
I've never been to, you know, a multiple floorgym.
Yeah.
That's exciting.
And you've got, like, tons of pictures of thelegends on the floor.
Like, with their signs?
Yes, on the wall.
Wow.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Okay.
And some, I didn't know, but my brother knew someof the famous faces are, like, training.
Actually.
I see.
He's excited.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Okay.
Wow.
I'll check that out.
Yeah, you should.
Okay.
All right.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Man.
Okay.
Do you have to change shoes?
Yes.
Okay.
Yeah.
All right.
Okay.
Got it.
Got it.
Do you have to really change shoes?
Yeah.
Okay.
They'll find out?
Yeah.
Like, if I secretly bring my outside shoes andpretend, like, it's an inside shoe,
you think they're gonna be like, hey.
I think so.
Shit.
Okay.
The staffs are, like, looking to you.
They'll check you out?
Okay.
All right.
All right.
I'm not gonna risk it.
Yeah.
I don't want to risk anything there.
Yeah, you should.
