There were three parts inthe French society.
Parts are the social groups.
The first one was priests, thesecond one was nobles.
And the third one was everyoneelse.
That's whythere were farmers, craftsmen, people who lived inthe city, and rich people who weren't nobles.
The first and secondparts had special rights.
This is called the privilege.
For example, you didn'thave to pay taxes.
But the third partwas that you had to pay taxes.
And taxes weren'tjust one thing. There were a lot of things.
So, let's think about it atschool.
Only one student didn'thave homework.
The other students hadto do everything.
So unfair.
That's the privilege.
And the third part was thepopulation.
In thePasedenjin, the nobles and priests were about 3%of the population.
The other three were 97% of thepopulation.
97% but they were the leastpowerful.
This is the French version ofthis episode.
La France avant 1789. At that time, France had aking.
Le roi décide presque tout tout seul. The kingdecides almost everything by himself.
C'est la monarchie absolue. It's the absolutemonarchy.
La société est divisée en trois ordres. Society isdivided into three orders.
Le premier, c'est le clergé. The first one is theclergy.
Le deuxième, c'est la noblesse. The second one isthe nobility.
Le troisième, c'est tout le reste. The third oneis everything else.
Peasants, artisans, citydwellers, everyone is in the same group.
Les deux premiers ordres ont des privilèges. Thefirst two orders have privileges.
Forexample, he doesn't pay some taxes.
Le troisième ordre, lui, paye tout. The thirdorder, him, pays everything.
Imaginez une classe Imagine a class
où seulement quelques élèves n'ont pas de devoir.where only a few students have no duty.
Les autres doivent tout faire. The others have todo everything.
C'est injuste, non ? It's unfair, no ?
C'est ça, un privilège. That's a privilege.
Yet, the third state is almost thewhole population.
But it'shim who has the least power.
Il y a un autre problème. There is anotherproblem.
L'état n'a plus d'argent. The state has no moremoney.
Il a beaucoup de dettes. It has a lot of debts.
So the king decides to hold a bigassembly.
C'est le sujet du prochain épisode. It's thesubject of the next episode.
Pourquoi les privilèges posent-ils problème ? Whydo privileges cause problems ?
Peasants and artisans work every day.
Pourtant, selon l'ordre dans lequel on est, Ondoesn't pay the same taxes.
Et on n'a pas les mêmes droits. And we don't havethe same rights.
It's oneof the reasons of the revolution.
Think about a situation where youfound something unfair.
That's whatthe third state felt.
Pour résumer, il y a trois problèmes. To sum up,there are three problems.
Un roi qui décide de tout. A king who decides ofeverything.
Trois ordres inégaux. Three unequal orders.
Et un état sans argent. And a state without money.
Ces trois problèmes vont tout faire changer. Thesethree problems will change everything.
