警察や医療機関から死亡の連絡があると、自治体はまず引き取る人を捜します。見つからない場合は自治体が火葬し、遺骨は遺族が引き取りに来る可能性を踏まえ、納骨堂などで一定期間、保管。引き取り手がなければ無縁の合葬墓（がっそうぼ）などに葬られます。
