The eruption alert level for the Yugama area of Mount Kusatsu-Shirane has been raised from level 1 to level 2. The Japan Meteorological Agency has restricted access within approximately one kilometer of the crater, citing the need for caution regarding large volcanic rocks.
Crustal movement has been confirmed since around June last year, and volcanic earthquakes have increased near the Yugama area, with 40 having been observed by the morning of the 4th.
In response to this, Kusatsu Town set up a disaster alert headquarters on the morning of the 4th and is urging residents and tourists to be careful via disaster prevention radio and email.
Climbing tours scheduled for September and October will also be canceled, marking the first time in four years that the Yugama area has been at level 2.
