こんにちは。 I am your host Mayu for 2AM OTTACK! In this podcast, we talk all about anime,
manga, movies, music, and history through our distinct perspectives as a born and raised
Japanese non-otaku. That's me and an American anime fan. That's me. Where are we now? We're
now finally both in Japan. Yay! I'm really excited to be here. It's been a rough days
where we are currently living because of heavy rain. There's a really big river and the river
overflowed and lots of rice fields are destroyed and some houses went underwater. So it's very
unusual to have this kind of natural disaster where I live but it's been like it became
new normal which is very scary. Yeah, I agree. It's a big change from Los Angeles where there's
not usually ever enough rain. I guess every once in a while every decade or so there'll be
like a big rainstorm that sort of floods part of the city but never anything on this scale where
you know rivers breaching their banks and levees and pouring into people's houses and like destroying
agriculture and stuff. It's been intense. Today we are going to talk about Golden Kamuy

Season 4. Can I sing? Yeah. Find a way to forever and a quick way to pass it on my love to you.
We have lots of like thoughts about this opening theme song so we'll work on that later. But first
we are really excited to watch this Season 4 of Golden Kamuy. What was your most favorite part
or like best part of this season? Well I mean this is something that's common to the other
Golden Kamuy Seasons too but I really liked how many twists and turns the plot took here.
There were a lot of moments where people stabbing each other in the back or someone being like a
double agent but then like a triple agent but then like maybe you know maybe betraying the
triple agent they just turned into you know that sort of thing. And so I enjoyed those aspects of
it. And we got some more character backstory which was really nice to kind of flesh out some of who
each of the characters are. Yeah I think I liked all of those parts of the and there were some
real development the relationship between Sugimoto I guess like everybody else but like
particularly between him and Ashida which was nice. I have a couple of my favorite parts of

Season 4 of Golden Kamuy. One of them is like in the I think for earlier episodes of Season 4
there are like a lot of trivias about explanation about the poisons or like how the poison works and
how did you know the guy didn't die but almost died but luckily didn't die because blah. Right.
Or like when I can't remember which character but like there's like a eyepatch guy and then
the reason because pirates wear eyepatch is so that they can their eye can get used to
darkness or light either way. Right. Right away. Yeah the idea being I think for pirates and really
just other sailors that when you go below decks you go from a very very bright environment to a
really dark one and so to be able to see better in those dark environments you want to protect
one of your eyes from you know changing from rods into cones or whatever it is. I'm not totally sure
I understand how the eye works enough to explain as well but yeah I thought that was a cool moment
too that there's there's these kind of call-outs to like medicine or chemistry or other sort of
fields of knowledge in some of the episodes. Also I was very into one episode where Koito
was talking like it was a flashback of Koito's story and you know he was born in Kagoshima
prefecture and talking the whole time with dialect. Yeah. Satsuma dialect which is which was
intense even for me. I understand my prefecture dialect which is Akita so like I have kind of
basic knowledge of my dialect but even so you know telling the story with whole story with
dialect is a very gutsy move and then I assume people who only speak like standard Japanese
they would probably have hard time understanding. Yeah I agree this show really goes above and
beyond to portray dialect accurately and also ranges pretty far in terms of the different
types of dialects it is portraying. So yeah I think I watched it with Japanese subtitles and so my
memory is that even the subtitles were in dialect and so I had to I was really just guessing for for
big chunks of that episode about what the people were actually trying to say and as with all visual
media like you can kind of work out what's going on based on what's happening on the screen even
if you don't necessarily know all the words. But yeah the the dialect was very thick and I mean
I'm no judge of how authentic dialect is but it sounded that one sounded pretty good.
There's there's some later dialect that I felt like came across as like a little bit more
forced and stilted right than Niigata. Yeah like that really felt like oh those people probably
don't really use this dialect but you know maybe the characters are also faking it and so
to some extent it might make sense I don't know it's hard to say. Yeah but again like I really

appreciate that they they are not hesitant using those dialect in like animation. Instead of just
pretending everybody speaks standard Japanese. Right which pisses me off.
Yeah I have to mention about the stories about Panampe and Penampe. Okay I'm going to take your
word for it I can't do any better than that. Yeah do you want to explain what Panampe and
the Penampe stories? I don't know if I do. I mean like it's pretty hard to explain these without
using either words or concepts that like most Americans I think would consider pretty profane.
Like I guess I'm gonna do it I'm wading into it. Okay so just explain it's a Ainu. Yes they are
Ainu folk stories that are like comedy basically they're they're all funny about two guys one of
whom is like always successful in the things that he does and the other of whom always fails
and usually gets killed by the end of the story and a lot of the stories focus on genitals.
Right so there's like one episode of Asheripa trying to tell trying to film Ainu stories using
what do you call the camera what do you call a camera the camera yeah it's a very early camera
without any sounds like black and white right and she was you know directing like all the like
characters and then that which was like a really funny episode yeah but they're like stories of
Panampe, Penampe and then the stories they introduced was like almost like this like
feel like they made it up they're they have different kind of stories which doesn't involve
male genitals but they do actually they do have those stories which are so funny they are pretty
funny yeah yeah I mean they sound like they were made by like a modern comedian not by I don't know
traditional Ainu folk storytellers but I guess you know people have different like ideas of like
what's appropriate and like but maybe they don't have very different ideas about what's funny right
but it's not like a moral story right yeah they're all like don't don't like you know
imitate other people just because they got lucky or rich or anything don't be
greedy don't be greedy is a big one yeah yeah I can get behind that yeah so check those stories
out if you're interested they are really interesting yeah yeah they are so I want to
introduce some characters on this in this season I mean this time I found a voice actor
who does voice for Koito Otonoshin and it's by Katsuyuki Konishi who did the voice for
Kyoichiro Yozakura from I think the title in English is Mission Yozakura Family oh okay yeah
and he did the voice for Tengen Uzui from Demon Slayer yeah that tracks and he did a great and
like I think Koito was kind of behaving normal this time compared to other characters yeah well
the bar certainly got lowered a lot um in this season the last couple episodes in particular
really like I don't know this show is like not afraid to go places that like other shows fear
to tread like there's a lot of real depravity happening I mean like I don't know in some ways
it's like hard to decide like is the is like the scene where the dude tries to catch a prostitute
killer by masturbating more or less disturbing than the scene where the same guy like kills his
best friend by stomping on his throat like as a teenager both of those are so messed up um
that yeah to say you know Koito is like acting more normally is true but also only because there
are other characters like Usami who are like so messed up in every single way that it's hard to
match their their level of messed up right I feel like most of the characters uh who follow Tsurumi
they have like trauma of trauma from the war but Usami is a little bit Usami was introduced like
someone someone born as a soldier yeah I he's like clearly an actual sociopath um from the
very beginning who you know might well have some form of trauma that they just didn't show us
but uh seems to have been yeah like very twisted well before the war happened as opposed to some
of the other characters who seem to have been twisted by the war itself Koito seems very very
nice right well he's a he's a bonbon right a barjona like right um a basic I'm trying to think
of like how to express this in English um when I was a kid my mom would sometimes describe the
same idea as little lord Fauntleroy which I have a feeling is like not a term that many English
speakers actually know but it means the same thing like a spoiled brat basically um so yeah
maybe that explains why he's so relatively normal and one new character there are like a lot of new
characters each episode each season but Takuboku Ishikawa who's very famous uh Japanese poet
right that you know if you go to Japanese school you see his face on like textbook and stuff he
has kind of a distinctive face doesn't he yeah he's he looks small and then like with big ears
yeah like a big round head he looks like calm and chill it's kind of like an Edgar Allen Poe
vibe going a little bit oh probably right so I was like it it was like interesting to see him like a

real it's like Hijikata Toshio Hijikata Toshio really existed right and then Ishikawa Takuboku
also existed but I was wondering why he was in Golden Kamui yeah and then his character his
personality was described as not so good person in the show you mean in the in Golden Kamui yeah
yeah I mean I I don't know that we know that he wasn't a good or was or wasn't a good person
but he apparently did live in Hokkaido for a couple of years and did work as a newspaper
reporter while he was there both in Sapporo I guess in Hakodate first and then later in in other
parts of uh of the country so I feel like it's like plausible to include him in the story in the
way that lots of historical fiction will kind of snag a person who at some time was in the place
you're describing and insert them into the narrative and uh in a way that is or isn't
totally plausible just because they they happen to be around then and they like could have maybe
done some of the stuff that they're described as doing in the show was it to me it was just
surprising how he was you know described as as like a like a person who likes women a womanizer
humanizer yeah but I think you don't learn you can kind of see it in his wikipedia page entry he
definitely like seems to have fallen hard and often for women who were like sometimes unattainable so
but on the textbook it's like oh he was a great poet from iwate prefecture well I mean you know
this is just my personal view but I think like maybe falling in love hard and often makes you
a better poet maybe I feel like there are lots of like famous people on textbook who liked like to
go to like a yukaku and spend a lot of money and in debt yeah I mean you know yeah there's I mean
there's been lots of famous poets who were womanizers yeah I think I mean we don't learn I
guess we don't have to learn I don't know Japanese textbooks are sanitizing the lives of
our famous poets because like we I don't know that interesting yeah well you you I guess you
have to find out once you're older and like willing to dig in history yeah that's probably

true yeah okay so let's talk about theme songs okay opening theme song which is the title is
never say goodbye feet mummy hyphen d by ali yeah I mean I think there's a way in which it's a real
callback to the first season because it has a lot of like hard to actually correctly identify English
in it um and even the song itself sort of reminds me of the very first song the man with a mission
song I can't remember its title but in terms of the the way that they're combining like some
English lyrics and some Japanese lyrics and I gotta admit it kind of grew on me in the same
way that the first one did like I really didn't like it the first couple times I heard it but then
like by the end of the season I was like yeah it's not that bad and you know it's like it's enough of
an earworm that at least the very beginning will get stuck in your head yeah I really didn't like
it I mean yeah the why why English lyrics I mean the very the first English lyric you know
find a way to forever and find a way to pass it on my life to you like kind of makes sense um
I was really afraid that one of the main characters was going to die because of the opening theme
songs like English lyrics and then they didn't so that was nice um but I mean I guess spoiler
alert they none of the main characters died in this season but uh the second part of the English
lyrics find a way to period which is period and and pass it on my life to you that doesn't make
any sense I'm not I have no idea what there's what they're going for there and so yeah it got
it got weird yeah I mean I got used to it towards the end of the season but at first I was like
oh is it like something like kaiju number eight same thing yeah there's always been like English
lyrics and in songs and this isn't like a western band clearly you know like they're they're
definitely like a Japanese band although I guess it's like a really diverse band right the people
who are yeah Ali is a multinational hip-hop slash funk band formed in Shibuya Tokyo all members of
the band are mixed with roots in Japan Europe America Asia and Africa so you know I think that's
awesome like I really like that aspect of like the identities of the people who make up the band
um I'm not sure it necessarily makes me like the song more and I don't know like I guess there's
part of me that wishes that the English lyrics in this type of song just made more sense you know
but then there's also part of me that's like whatever like when Japanese bands are gonna
throw English lyrics to their songs like it doesn't need to make sense and like you know
the sort of English that you get on like t-shirts in Japan is like epic and really fun and so part
of me is also like yeah don't change it like you can just leave it you can it can be it can be sort
of weird and random and be something they were trying to communicate that just didn't translate
and like I think I'm actually okay with that like I don't I don't think it needs to change okay all

right um so a little bit more about Ali the band Ali released their first single wild side which
was chosen to be the opening theme song for the first season of anime beastars uh and their
self-titled debut album both in 2019 a year later Ali released their second single lost in paradise
featuring rapper AKLO used as an ending theme for the anime jujutsu kaisen so they did a couple
uh anime theme songs I guess yeah I can't say I remember wild side like particularly well um and
I'm not sure it was like my favorite either but you know it's cool they're getting work and like
making songs and we haven't watched JJK so I can't really comment on that one I don't think I've
ever heard that song but um yeah you know good for them okay what about ending theme song by
spellbound yeah I liked this song more um I think I also like the animation for the closing better
it's done in a really neat style of you know newspaper sheets of kind of like each of the
different teams that are searching for the gold and the different people who are in them and some
of them are done in the style of like you know early 1900s ads and some of them are like you
know news pieces and stuff and just I don't know it looks cool and the song sounds pretty good um
and I liked it freeze frame freeze frame and the read uh the explanation about each character
and some of them are ads right like old style ads like for shiraishi is like like um treating your
like uh disease or like I don't know I can't remember it but there are like a lot of like
joke about the each characters and then yeah it you know probably they'll um produce like paper
newspapers and sell it as a product as a anime product that would be cool I would buy that

yeah yeah you can make it for like norang or something oh that sounds good wow you're coming
up with like great marketing ideas what do you say in english uh there's definitely not a direct
translation of noran it's the it's the like cloth signs slash like curtains that are draped over the
outside of like a nighttime ramen stand um or like across the entryway of a restaurant I don't know
especially restaurants right right but so they're uh they kind of take the place of a door in places
where there is no door so you like lift the curtain as you go in but that's unknown yeah
it's a good word of the day yeah well we have better word of the day yes today's word of the
day is which I have no idea if that's how you pronounce it in russian but that's how all of the
characters in the show say it but especially ogata who's my favorite voice and yeah he says it like
a bunch of times and it's great I really I can't get enough of it so what does barucho
nakumi so it's translated into japanese as bonbon and again this sort of means like
I used little lord fauntleroy earlier spoiled rich kid is probably like a simpler translation
it kind of goes beyond that to imply like somebody who comes from a house with money
who's also been like raised I think with like some manners but also has been spoiled and like only
knows a life of like luxury and ease right you could you could be spoiled you could not be spoiled
but your family the men guys man it's family of rich yeah and you are rich too so I don't know
anything about russian and I have no idea if you can apply barucho nakumi to a girl or not
but it seems to be especially for like boys from rich families right yeah so it's bonbon
in japanese and in russian barucho nakumi maybe I don't know if that's really the right pronunciation
I'm going to keep saying it I think one of the other ways we translate in this uh this in english
is to say someone was born with a silver spoon in their mouth implies the same kind of like
you had money and you've always had sort of privilege growing up and you haven't really
had to like work hard and stuff for things wait so the uh the manga anime silver spoon comes from
that meaning uh it probably I can't think of a lot of other origins of the phrase silver spoon
unless they're making like a culinary reference or something and being like it's so good it's
silver I don't know in that case you probably upgrade to goals you know what I'm saying or
platinum or something but yeah born with a silver spoon in your mouth means someone who
is like rich from the time they were born and had all the advantages of wealth when they were like
okay is there anything you want to add about season four of golden kami um
no I mean the action returns to hokkaido which is cool because I think like season three was a
little tough like there was it felt so far away from things I was familiar with like it was cool
to like get to learn more about karafta or about sakhalin island but um it just it felt like it
wasn't clear where the narrative was going right they were like far away from the gold like it just

endless chase to the middle of nowhere um and so this season in that they come back to hokkaido
and are in sort of some of the locations they've been in before and like it really feels like the
hunt for the gold is heating up a little bit um I think all of those things combine to make this like
a little bit more of an exciting season than the previous one I thought you liked the the part
sugimoto became sugimoto again like he he he barely said I I'm immortal yeah yeah yeah yeah
we finally get another good which like I've been really like missing so he only did it once in this
season right I think so yeah but there's like there's finally like a good immortal because he
was like really like he changed his personality and like like a killed they did a whole amazing
action do you remember yeah yeah yeah there's there's a pretty good action sequence towards
the end of the season that like really felt like it had been like missing for a while like
sugimoto had been kind of like more mature and like reflective and like oh maybe we shouldn't
kill people and search for the gold anymore you know and uh kind of went back to his original
character and it was it was cool he's a boss if you live in LA check LA public library and the LA
