先日、家族でハワイ旅行に行ってきました。 Nice. 気候も穏やかで過ごしやすく、ゆったりとした時間が流れており、とてもリラックスできました。
さて、その旅行中、ホテルのエレベーターで乗り合わせた英語圏の方に話しかけられました。
雰囲気的には好意的な内容を話されていたと思うのですが、
膜仕立てるような速さで話しておられ、私は全く聞き取れず、愛想笑いを浮かべることしかできず、目的界に到着したので、そのままお別れをしました。
このような、好意的な雰囲気だが、何を話しているかわからず、とはいえ聞き返すほどの時間もないような時、
英語圏の方に使えるようなフレーズや返し方がもしあれば教えていただけると幸いです。

My question is, how much Japanese do people understand there?
I heard some stories, yeah, like they understand Japanese, they use Japanese.

It's like Japanese travelers be like, I don't, I didn't even have to use anything, right?

They're the state with the most Asian population.
So I wonder how it is, you know, I'm curious, curious.

But they have like Japanese stores, Japanese restaurants, they have Japanese shrines, so
I guess.
So my question is, so if I go there, I look Japanese, right?
Should I go with the flow and speak Japanese to the, like, would it be weird if I just
start speaking in this, like, super American accent to them?
Yeah.
That's a good question though.

Like if I go to a restaurant where there's so, where it's so popular amongst the Japanese
tourists and the staff, all are familiar, like all are used to Japanese, customers just
pointing and ordering and just saying all these Japanese phrases, Japanese, English
phrases.

Like, is it easier, is it more smoother to just go with the flow and do what the Japanese

that kind of knows Japanese and is maybe visiting or living in Japan.
And like, he gets nervous, like, should I go with English or should I go with Japanese?
Because all the, let's say the touristy Japanese places, these employees are so used to foreign
customers, right?
That, should I just go with the flow and just speak English or not Japanese?
And that's like the same exact situation, and I get it, you know?

Because that shows that his Japanese wasn't good enough.

I'm like, oh, like, I feel like if I was the employee, maybe I would have done that, you
know?
It was, oh, you guys, maybe he doesn't know that I speak English.
So, for him, I'll speak English.
