Welcome to Kevin's English Room Podcast.
Yes, yes, yes.
This one?
Okay.
Mick-san.
Mick?
Yes.
ケビンさん、ヤマトさん、こんにちは。
こんにちは。
いつも通学時に楽しく聞かせてもらっています。
私は今、英語ディベート部に所属しており、
Wow.
練習メニューの中にロジックトライアルというものがあります。
AIに矛盾した英文を作ってもらい、
それに対してのアタックを1分で考えて30秒でスピーチするというものなのですが、
Wow.
何かやっても上手く伝えたいことがたたわりません。
Wow.
You know, I'm always fascinated by debaters.
Yeah.
I don't know how their brain works.
They're so smart.
Debaters?
Have you seen the debaters?
English debates that they do?
Maybe not.
I haven't...
Isn't it...
It's like a lot different from speech contest or something?
Yeah, they're different from speech contest.
It's an argument.
It's a formal argument.
Okay.
Well, I'm not familiar with that.
You have rounds.
Oh, you have rounds?
Yeah.
Debate.
Debate competition.
Okay.
There's like a debate club.
You know debate clubs, right?
How about this one?
Okay, this is not unusual.
How about this?
Eighth grade debate competition.
Okay.
Oh, you have a competition.
Okay, bad audio.
High school debate championship of Cleveland.
03:02
Thank you.
So they state their opinion against the subject.
Yeah.
And then the opposing side would like counter it.
Okay.
Awesome.
So let's start on this idea of cosmopolitanism.
So how do we weigh this when each country has a different idea of justice?
So we would say that the overall idea of justice isn't going to be based on countries.
It's going to be based on the individual.
Is a certain individual achieving their due?
So we're just looking to maximize rights then?
No.
So we're looking to decrease the differences among states because if we don't, they will
perpetrate the arbitrary domination of people in other countries.
For example, with climate change, because wealthy countries can afford to spend money in a way
that alleviates the effect on themselves but not fix the root cause, they would do that
even though that constitutes harm for other countries.
So are you arguing that we should homogenize all cultures then?
No.
This is not about homogenizing cultures.
It's about the distribution and conflicts among states and reducing that.
That does not mean everyone suddenly has to be part of the same culture.
Okay.
That's fine.
Let's jump down to your first contention in which you talk about climate change.
So you talk about how a lot of developed...
Yeah.
So that's what they do.
Okay.
Wow.
And it's a really smart thing.
I can't ever do that.
I can't do that.
I can't do that.
In Japanese, no.
Right?
Even in Japanese, this must be really difficult.
Yeah.
I'm curious about the AI thing that they make the AI make a logically not correct sentence
and then you attack that.
Yeah.
How do you do that?
I want to try that.
Yeah.
Wow.
Wow.
Wow.
True.
Right.
So this is...
So think about my ability.
Okay.
I have maybe like a speaking ability.
Okay.
In many writing in a whole ability.
Okay.
This is the worst ability that I have.
Oh, really?
This is impossible for me to do this.
Are you talking about because of how fast they talk or are you talking about like...
The fact that you have to sort of counter whatever anyone's saying?
I'm not saying English, but including Japanese, this is something I can never feel like do this.
Yeah, me too.
It's difficult.
It is its own skill, I think.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Well, I understand if you're really good at this, you can...
In company, you can beat somebody.
You can conclude things as you want it.
Yeah.
I understand it's really, really important skill.
06:03
Yeah.
But I'm terrible at it.
Me too, man.
I would say I'm very terrible at this too.
And you know, like these competitions, you don't know which side you're going to be on.
Oh.
So like climate change is actually not that bad for the world.
Let's say that's the prompt.
And then agree or disagree, you don't know until like five minutes before the actual debate.
You have to prepare for both sides.
That's impossible.
Yeah.
For me, that's impossible.
It's so difficult.
It's so difficult.
Hmm.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It's so not cooperative.
Oh, yeah.
It's simple battle, right?
It's simple battle.
It's not cooperative.
Oh, that's...
Yeah.
It's a battle.
Yeah.
I don't...
It's a fist fight, but words.
Yeah.
It's really...
That...
Even this video makes me feel so unstable.
My mentality makes...
This makes my mentality unstable.
So far.
It's tiring, isn't it?
Yeah.
It's so...
Wow.
It is...
They are using a lot of like difficult vocabularies, right?
I didn't even get what the guy with the glasses said.
They speak so fast.
Yeah.
With so much...
I didn't understand what they said.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It's just...
Yeah.
Wow.
So that's a...
What do you call that?
Debate?
Debate battle?
Speech competitions?
Debate competitions?
Wow.
I didn't know there was such a thing.
Yeah.
So that's what the Japanese do, right?
In English.
In English.
Yeah.
I wonder about that.
I wonder about what level they're doing.
Yeah.
English.
Debate.
English debate.
Like this?
Hmm.
Okay.
Hello, everyone.
Hello.
Today's topic is homework should be abolished.
Now, I welcome the prime minister to give a speech within three minutes.
Thank you.
Are they what?
High schoolers?
Or...
I don't know.
They look like college students.
Hello, everyone.
Hello.
Today's topic is we should abolish homework.
Whoa.
09:00
They're really good at English.
Yeah.
Yeah.
On that, we will abolish any and all kinds of homework.
We will also abolish spring and summer vacation homework.
We think Sweden has already abolished homework, so we would introduce a similar system in Japan.
We have two points.
The first point is that students will have more free time to pursue their own interests.
Great pronunciation, by the way.
Really good.
Teachers will be able to give higher quality lessons to students.
I will explain the first point, that students will have more free time to pursue their interests.
We believe that right now, students have way too much homework.
The subject is much easier.
Yeah.
Like, I can understand this easily.
Right.
So, what's her claim?
They have a fascination with which little kids look at bugs or go into the streets to find new things that they can learn.
But we think that when students have to work their way through endless sheets of homework, 20 to 30 pages each, it's boring for them.
And they lose interest in the subject.
Which means that even if teachers give out homework to students, students don't learn this.
They have to do what they are interested in or pursue other activities.
Wasting time.
Yes.
Why can you guarantee that the majority of students do that valuable activity instead of playing games or watching YouTube and wasting time?
We think the reason that students waste time right now is because they are so tired by homework that they don't really want to do anything else after school is done.
Imagine, you're a student that stimulates, we think that for students, stimulates them.
This is why.
So, they pose some questions.
I guess, yeah, I guess there's that interaction, right?
Now, the opposing sort of side gets to have their two minutes or something.
Hello.
We believe that we should not abolish the homework.
First, let me debunk what the government team said.
They said, like, the amount of the homework could be ridiculously heavy.
But we don't believe it is true.
Because the teacher also cares about the interaction between our friends.
Also, they care about motivation of the child.
So, they would like you to actually modify the amount of the homework.
And also, if you submit the homework, you can be praised by the teacher or the parents.
So, we believe the homework also motivates the child to study.
But also, they said, like, they can do after their interest.
But we don't see any importance of it.
They call it childhood.
Everyone can, I mean, play outside or they play a video game seven days, 24 hours.
They say like this because the tiredness of the homework.
But we don't see it's likely.
We say the child will likely to waste the time and just continue watching YouTube.
So, we don't see any importance of it.
So, let me explain.
Oh, you get to say.
No, you don't get to ask questions.
I didn't know that was there.
Because it's their time.
It's their time.
So, playing with friends or playing outside is also a very important part of a child's growth.
Why is this less important than memorization or things you can do with homework?
12:04
We consider it important.
But we believe it won't be a trade-off between the homework and interaction.
It can be done.
Both can be done within outside class.
But within government side, the child will not likely to study.
So, that is a problem that we are actually talking about.
So, ladies and gentlemen.
So, when it comes to the understanding where homework can be effective.
Wow.
Unbelievable.
Unbelievable.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Wow.
Wow.
We should be a team and join the debate and see how far we can go.
Honestly, this is really not in me.
Very outside of our comfort zone and our skill.
This kind of action, this kind of communication or whatever, this kind of activity really isn't in me.
Yeah.
Like you're already looking tired from looking at it.
I don't care.
Like, I don't mind both sides.
Just support them.
Just achieve that.
I would be so happy that I support.
I don't care which side.
That's the whole point of the competition.
I'm here to support you guys, man.
Yeah.
Completely different interest though, right?
Completely different side of the skill.
Yeah.
It's really, I mean, already difficult, even if it's in Japanese.
Yeah.
And you have to speak in English.
Right.
You have to follow the logic.
That's so difficult.
You have to translate it to English.
Yeah.
You have to talk fast.
You should try that.
Yeah.
It'll be fun.
It'll be fun.
Yeah.
I mean, it's not in me as well, but I would want to try though.
You want to try.
Yeah.
I remember doing a debate.
There was a debate class in our school.
In Japan?
Yeah, in Japan.
In Japan.
Oh.
The English classes that I was in, they would do like a...
So, this week and next week, we're going to do English debates.
I remember we did a mock trial of...
Yeah.
Mock trial?
Mock trial, like trial, but like fake trial.
Oh, okay.
Yeah.
And we would state our shit.
There's the opposing side.
Yeah.
How you did that?
15:00
It was ridiculous though.
What do you mean ridiculous?
It was ridiculous.
We didn't...
Our team didn't really shine.
Okay.
Oh, okay.
Sadly.
Yeah.
We would say something and people would debunk it.
Yeah.
And we'd be like, well...
Well, yeah, it's true.
But like, you know...
Wouldn't it be better if it was like that?
Yeah, I get it.
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
It's a different skill.
Right.
But you...
To me, you're kind of a logical guy.
I mean, yeah, but like it's...
I guess it's a different sort of, you know, different kind of athleticism.
Okay.
It's just...
Yeah.
It's a different type of...
Yeah.
Sport.
Sport, yeah.
Right.
So, all right.
Thanks for listening, guys.
Thank you.
Bye-bye.
