Welcome to ケビン's English Room Podcast.
Hello.
Hello.
シンガポールの物価について
So, you are safely back from Singapore.
Yes.
So, I've never been to Singapore.
I want to ask you two questions.
Yes.
One is about food.
One is about the currency, the rates and everything.
So, I have kind of
like blurred image
of Singapore has like really high
rate of everything.
You have to pay a lot.
Like 物価.
Yeah, 物価 is really high.
But how is that? You felt that?
I didn't feel that it was too much.
It's definitely not cheap.
I feel it's just slightly higher than Japan, I would say.
Slightly higher than Japan, okay.
Yeah.
Like a street food meal
was
it was like 7
sorry, 7 Singapore dollar.
Okay.
So, that is about like
850とか
Okay.
900円とか
to 10 dollars
or maybe even 13 dollars.
Okay.
That's about what? 1500円とかね。
For street food though.
If you go to a restaurant, it's gonna jack up the price.
Okay.
So, okay.
You mean street foods,
you mean like kind of
焼きそば or like those things, right?
Yeah, chicken and rice.
Noodles, like
fried noodles.
Well, yeah, true.
It's a little bit like
more expensive than Japan, maybe.
But like if you're used to
Tokyo, it's not like
Yeah.
If you're buying everything
at konbini,
it's not
bad.
Yeah, right.
I see.
So, that's good.
Okay.
I thought it's like Dubai or something.
Yeah, I mean expensive country.
That's my image.
It's better than that.
Not unlivable, I would say.
I see.
シンガポールの食文化
What about foods?
Yeah, the food.
So, okay.
It was good.
Overall, it was great.
But I didn't see much variety
in the types of food.
Okay.
What did they have?
Mostly rice and chicken.
Rice and chicken and noodles.
I see.
Rice and chicken,
you mean like
it's Thai
kind of things like that?
So,
not really.
It's not like that.
They were using,
it was like shoyu and mirin
but with a little bit of an Asian twist.
I know it's kind of difficult to get.
Okay.
I've never,
you've never tasted it, but you know the flavor.
I see.
The Asian taste, right?
Yeah.
It's not like green curry.
It's not like those coconut-y ones.
It's nothing like that.
But it's Asian.
The Asian flavor.
Yeah, I get it.
I get it, yeah.
Okay, so it's not bad.
Nothing that we're not used to.
But I didn't see
any pizza place.
There was like one Domino's place.
Yeah, but I didn't see,
there were not many.
There were not many
Italian, French,
American.
Yeah, not as much,
not as much of a variety
there are in Japan.
I thought there were some
Americans or like Europeans people
living there.
So not as many.
Oh, I see.
So mainly like Asians.
Mainly Asians.
The language that I heard most was Chinese.
Okay, yeah.
That was the one that I heard the most.
I see.
シンガポールのカヤトースト
What foods do you recommend
to me?
Let me,
let's just say best three.
I would say
what food should I try?
Try the
kaya toast.
It's breakfast.
Kaya toast.
What is that?
Kaya toast is,
so this is a famous
kaya toast place.
Yakun Kaya Toast.
And this is what they sell.
So it's
toast with
butter, like block of butter
in jam.
Wow.
You dip it in, wow.
Onsen tamago?
Yeah.
Topped with shoyu and pepper.
You mix it
and then you dip it, wow.
That's something
okay.
It was good though.
It was good.
That's something like
really?
So
the,
maybe this is only the yakun
kaya toast, but the bread
very light. Very light and
very crispy. Yeah, it looks like
cookies. It does.
Crispy. You don't get any of the breadness
like you know, the fluffiness.
It's very, it's like crackers even
almost. Right? Yeah, I can see
that. Right? Inside you've
got butter and jam.
That's right. And you
dip it in? Eggs.
With the soy sauce. With the soy sauce, yes.
So it's salty and sweet.
Yeah. I mean salty and sweet
is known to be a good
combination. Right.
I would love to try
this one. It works. Yeah.
But do be
careful with the amount that you eat.
Okay. You are using a block of
butter. So this one
so like a normal size
combo gets you
four pieces.
One piece uses
a block of butter and two slices of bread.
So the amount of
slices of bread you eat, you eat eight.
And you eat four blocks of butter.
What do you mean the block
of butter is like the size
that we see at the supermarket in Japan? Oh, no, no, no.
The block of butter is very thinly
sliced. Oh, okay. But it is
more than what you would
put on a loaf of bread like
in Japan. Like you spread it with your
knife. A lot more than
that. So it is very, very buttery.
I see. So
if you can't consume
that much like oil,
you know, fat,
it is going to be
a little too fatty for you.
Maybe you should
share it with
people. Right.
Can I toast? Sounds
interesting. I cannot
imagine the taste.
I would love to try that one.
But it kind of, I mean,
all the ingredients, I felt like
you can try to replicate it in
Japan. Like all the things,
it wasn't that different.
Yeah.
Even the soy sauce?
Yeah, soy sauce.
It was kind of like light
soy sauce or something. I see.
I feel like it is replicatable.
Okay.
Number two,
I would say,
サテの魅力
you should
go to a food court.
Oh, no, no, no.
You should go to Hawker and
try the
what is it called?
The skewers. What is it called?
There is this really famous skewer.
In Singapore? Yes.
What is it called?
What is it called?
Sate.
Sate. Have you heard of that?
No, I've never heard of it.
Sate.
Yeah, so it looks like this.
It's almost exactly what I got.
Okay. It's chicken or pork
on a stick.
It's basically yakitori.
Skewers.
And then they would cook it
on top of the
fire.
It's like
barbecuing.
Basically barbecuing.
They coat it in
sweet sauce.
I don't know what it is.
You dip it in this
curry-looking thing.
This is salty.
Is it spicy?
Yeah, it's a little bit spicy.
Yeah, it's a little bit spicy.
A little bit curry-y.
It's very, very
sweet and spicy curry.
Okay.
Okay.
You get these raw vegetables.
Cucumber and onions.
Onions. Raw onions.
Fucking raw.
Must be shrunk.
Yeah, it was shrunk.
It was good.
Because the meat is kind of
thick.
It's a good refreshener.
I see.
I think this is
the main thing
if you go to Hawker.
It's the most selling shit.
Sate.
So the meat itself is kind of
sweet? Yeah, the meat itself is
dipped in a little bit of sweet sauce.
And then you dip it into the sour,
spicy curry-ish sauce?
Not sour, but yeah.
It's salty.
So in your mouth,
you get a sweet and sour combo.
A sweet and spicy combo.
Sounds like
Asian country.
But the meat itself
is yara-kai.
You get a little bit of a sneaky flavor.
Really good.
Looks nice.
Most places, minimum of 10.
You have to buy from 10 skewers.
But
if you're hungry, you can go for 20.
It's like
one bite. I can bite one skewer in one bite.
Oh, is that like this
Yeah, it's like this big.
The length is like this big.
So it's pretty small.
Nice.
Good street food.
豆腐デザートの特徴
Number 3?
I would say
there are many things that I even
never heard of.
Like those
plates and dishes and everything.
This one.
This
toufa.
It's I guess
soybean pudding.
It's like not
sweet onion tofu-ish.
It has a texture
of a tofu.
But a flavor of a
sweet, like really thin
onion tofu.
Made from
soy.
Is that for dessert?
I think it's dessert.
I see.
But it's very refreshing.
Very nice.
This is very good.
It's not sweet.
It's a little bit sweet.
But it's not like an onion tofu sweet.
It's not an onion tofu sweet.
It's watery.
Very good.
Refreshing.
You feel the soy?
Yeah, you kind of
do feel the soy.
シンガポールの朝食メニュー
You're okay with soy, right?
Well, yeah.
I don't drink soy milk.
Oh, got it.
Yeah, I think
just one, two bites.
Yeah.
Right.
Yeah, that's good.
You don't, without anything,
you just eat it.
You don't put any sauce on top.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Looks good.
Looks...
I don't know.
Looks like there's no bad element inside.
Yeah, it can't be bad.
It can't be that bad, right?
Right.
Okay.
I've never heard of none of those.
None of those?
Great to know that.
Just try it.
Love to try.
Thanks for listening, guys.
Peace.
