Welcome to Kevin's English Room Podcast.
Hello guys, how's it going?
So, this one.
Rika-chan.
She teaches English at a club school.
When she was teaching advanced English,
a student asked her, 生徒から
You don't say liking, do you?
she was asked.
No? So-so.
So-so, yeah.
Not everyday.
I mean, I can use it all the time.
I mean, yeah.
Just as much as I'm loving this, feeling this.
I didn't even know that was grammaticallyincorrect.
So, what does that mean, I'm liking?
So, I'm liking this.
It's like...
Let's say I eat something.
Oh, man, I'm liking this.
You're at the point of like...
You didn't know if you liked it or not,
but you tried it.
And then you're at the stage of like you'restarting to like it.
I see, I see.
You're at the process of liking this.
So, that's why...
Oh, I'm liking this.
I see.
You're building up that like.
I see.
Yeah.
So, it's...
I see, I see, I see.
So, it's just like you're...
Like I am running.
I am eating.
Yeah, yeah.
And now I'm liking this one.
Yes, yeah, yeah.
Just the same thing.
Right, right.
Oh, I see, I see.
True.
In Japanese, we learn those like...
And like that.
Yeah.
So, many of including me, we learned like I'mliking is...
Incorrect.
Yeah.
But actually you can use it.
Yeah.
I think the difference between I like this and I'mliking this would be...
When you say I like this, you've already concludedit.
03:04
Like you've already finalized your, you know, emotions.
Yeah, yeah.
You have an answer.
I like this.
You've already decided that you like it.
I'm liking this is more like...
I'm on the process of like...
Yeah, liking this.
So, I haven't gotten to the conclusion that I likethis or not.
But right now, it's doing a good job.
I'm liking this.
I see, I see.
It makes sense, right?
Yeah.
It makes sense.
True.
So, I'm feeling it.
I'm feeling something.
Okay.
I'm loving.
Is that a Jyotai as well?
Yeah.
Okay.
I'm loving it.
I mean, McDonald's.
Yeah.
Has it on their slogan, right?
That's exactly what we learn in school.
Okay, really?
It's only McDonald's.
And then they introduce us.
I'm loving it.
This is because just a phrase.
It's like a set phrase.
Okay.
It's a, you know, copy.
I see.
Catch copy.
Okay.
So, it's actually grammatically like it's wrong.
But it's a phrase.
I see.
Don't ask any further.
Yeah.
Well, I mean, you can use it, you know, ineveryday phrase.
Actually, just like I'm loving it.
Sorry, just like I'm liking it.
I'm loving it has a very similar nuance to it, youknow.
Like, hmm.
You know, on second thought, it has a slightly ofa different nuance, I think.
Then I'm liking it.
Yeah.
So, when you say I'm loving it, you're right nowfeeling the love.
Not you're starting to love.
That's right.
You're not building anything up.
You're like you're currently feeling the love.
Like, you know, you're eating that hamburger.
And I'm feeling that love.
I'm loving it.
I see.
It's very current.
It's very in the moment.
It's very right now.
Yeah.
I see.
When you say I love it, it's like it feels like acomment after you finished eating the hamburger.
And then you thought about if you like it or not.
And then your answer is I love it.
That's what it feels like.
But I'm loving it.
It's right now.
Yeah.
You're feeling it.
I'm feeling it right now.
I see.
And it's totally not wrong to you.
Yeah, I didn't think that was wrong.
I didn't think that was wrong.
Right.
Yeah.
I see.
Yeah.
OK.
Well, what are some other typical Jyotais outthere?
06:01
Yeah.
Let me search.
Jyotai wo...
So I guess hate.
Opposite of that is Jyotai probably.
True.
I'm hating.
You say I'm hating.
I'm hating it?
Yeah.
Hating this.
So...
Like.
Want.
I'm wanting this.
Like you look at a bag and right now you'refeeling that desire of owning it.
It's right now.
It's going through my body.
I want this.
That's your wanting right now.
I'm wanting it.
Yeah.
So you say it.
Yeah, you say it.
例えば、I like soccerと言いますが、I'm liking soccerとは言いません。
Well, yes you do.
Yes you do.
Like for example, you're watching first, I don'tknow, studio.
You watch soccer for the first time in a realstudio.
I'm liking soccer.
Thank you for taking me here.
You say that?
Yeah.
Okay.
I have a brother.
I have a pen.
は、I'm having a pen.
とか、I'm having a brotherとは言わない。
You agree?
I'm having a pen.
You half agree?
I'm having a baby.
You say that a lot.
I have a brother
09:00
I know your father.
I'm knowing your father
You don't say knowing your father.
So some of them you don't say.
So I guess that's very difficult for Japanesepeople to learn.
But for the examples that I gave, for those, youcan say the ING version.
Thanks for listening, guys. Bye-bye.
