日本のお世辞文化vsアメリカの本音文化

案外アメリカでも他人の目を気にしたり、気を遣ったりする。

Welcome to Kevin's English Room Podcast!
Hello!
Hello!
Is that the Japanese instrument?
Yeah.
I got that, man.
Oh, cool.
Immediately when you said it.
Wow.
It just rung a bell.
Right there.
That's it.
We ended with the same sentences.
No, we finished each other's sentences.
That's the phrase.
We finished...
What's that again?
We finished each other's sentences.
Sentences?
Sentences.
Sentences.
We finished each other's sentences.
Yeah, right.
We were telepathy.
Yeah.
Whatever that is called.
Yeah.
Telepathizing, whatever it's called.
Yeah.
Right?
Telepathy.

So what do we have for us today?
John?
Message from Nanase-san.
Nanase-san.
Yes.
All right.
Thank you, Nanase-san.
Hello, I'm Nanase.
Hello.
It's been a week since I came to Vancouver.
I wanted to thank you, Kevin-san.
What is it?
I'm currently staying at home.
I don't know who's famous on TV.
But the other day, I was watching a cooking show with an old man.
I was just watching it,
but then my host mother asked me, "Do you know Gordon Ramsay?"
Oh!
And I was like, "Yes!"
And then I saw a video of Kevin's English Room making a hamburger.
And I was like, "Yes!"
Thanks to Kevin-san, I was able to watch a video of Gordon Ramsay
and recognize him clearly.
Thank you very much.
Yay!
PS.
I've never seen anyone so passionate about a hamburger.
The cooking show was also a hamburger show.
Because of the time limit,
it seemed like there was something raw in the meat,
and Gordon Ramsay was spitting it out.
Oh, so it was a Gordon Ramsay show.
Yeah.
Like Hell's Kitchen or something?
No.
Maybe like the...
Oh, I know what it is.
Like bottle things.
Blue versus red kind of thing.
Yeah, I think I know what that is.
Have you seen a program with Gordon Ramsay on it?
I just saw the short clip.
Just a few seconds clip.
Was he pissed off about lamb sauce?
No?
I think one of his most favorite content is like
not having the lamb sauce on the lamb.
"Where's the fucking lamb sauce?"
This is like a very famous phrase that he does.
Oh no.
Or like, "It's fucking raw!"
Yeah, maybe that's...
Yeah, he gets pissed off rapid.
03:03
Do you love him?
I love him.
I love his shows.
Do you often see the show?
So far, I know three different shows that he's on.
One is...
Three different shows?
Yeah.
How famous...
He's pretty famous, dude.
One is Hell's Kitchen.
Hell Hotel is the next one.
I think the third one is...
Kitchen Nightmares.
It's scary.
Yeah, they're all pretty scary.
Very scary names.
Kitchen Hell.
I think it's the one where like...
I'm sorry if the name is wrong,
but I think it's somewhere along the lines of that.
It's where like Gordon Ramsay would walk into a restaurant.
And it's usually like a very bad restaurant.
The food's bad, the food safety's not there,
the bad service or something like that.
Staffs.
Staff, yeah, bad staff.
Poorly educated.
Or like so Gordon Ramsay would walk into a restaurant
and would order something, right?
And then like...
And then he gets the food and then he tries it,
he spits it out and he gets pissed off about it.
God's fucking disappointment.
God, so greasy.
Fucking feel like I'm eating an old man's socks.
He would diss.
Wow, okay.
And then he would call the manager or the kitchen staff.
And like, "What the fuck is this?"
"Try it, try it, I want you to eat it."
And then they get into a fight.
And then Gordon Ramsay's goal would be to transform the restaurant
into like a decent one.
Okay.
So...
And throughout the way, there's like all this drama behind it.
Like staff versus the boss, right?
Like there's like this friction between them and he's trying to fix it.
There's something wrong with the character.
Maybe dishonesty or like maybe too stubborn.
Gordon Ramsay would like fucking like attack him
and try to make him change.
And it's fun.
It's a documentary kind of film.
So he's a good guy actually.
Yeah, he's a good guy.
Try to transform in a better restaurant.
Right, right, exactly.
Like for the people kind of guy.
And the way he does it is very aggressive and angry.
And everybody likes to see that.
And that's Hell's Kitchen.
And Hell's Hotel.
Hotel Hell is like a similar version, but like a hotel version.
And then I think Kitchen Nightmares is like...
I think they battle.
Two teams battle.
And then like...
So maybe that's the one.
Yeah, I think that's what she was like.
And then you guys have like 30 minutes with this ingredient to prepare a better dish.
And then they would each serve a plate to Gordon Ramsay
and then he would choose which one's better.
I think something like that.
It's like a survival kind of game.
Ah, okay.
Right.
So yeah, it's pretty interesting to watch.
06:02
I want to see that show.
And it's fun.
Yeah, it's interesting.
Yeah.
It's a real documentary.
Yeah, it's a real documentary, I think.
I think, you know.
Yeah, of course.
You never know when it's staged.
Yeah, of course.
Yeah.
Wow.
But it's interesting.
Yeah.
Can we see through the Amazon?
No, I don't know.
Probably not on Amazon TV shows.
It's probably like...
It's probably on YouTube.
I'm sure you can watch it.
But I don't know if it's uploaded legally or not.
Yeah, of course.
So you might have to pay for something, though.
Yeah.
Okay.
So she sends another message, actually.
Yeah.
(Speaking Japanese)
Hmm.
I think Japanese people have this...
Too much of an image that Americans are just too honest.
Yeah.
But that's not the case.
I mean, some people do have like an "oseji" and say that,
"Oh, that looks great," even though they don't actually...
But maybe not as intense as the Japanese people.
But it certainly does exist.
Okay.
Right.
A lot more than the average Japanese people think.
So even in the United States, if you say something too honest,
then the relationship will be worse.
Exactly.
That could happen.
Okay.
That's the same.
Yeah.
In France as well?
That's the same.
Right, right, right.
Yeah, yeah.
It's always there.
Yeah.
But do you think Japan is more intense than France?
Or no?
I guess so.
Yeah.
They are more like open for the argument, actually.
Yeah.
So different opinions, open for those.
So many different opinions.
But does that apply to like haircuts and stuff like that?
Those personal things?
Yeah.
Those are more like soft topics, I feel like,
that are more like emotionally like...
Yeah.
...should be taken care of kind of like...
Yeah, true.
..."shio tsukau" kind of thing?
True.
But they are really open.
But at the same time, if they like it,
they would like really say it.
"I love your hairstyle.
It's really gorgeous.
It's lovely."
Okay.
So it's in both ways.
Right.
Whereas I think in Japan, if you "homeru" too much,
then if you're not "hometeru," then you start to worry like,
09:02
"Oh, maybe if I don't "homeru" so much,
they would suspect that I don't like it."
So that's where it gets a little intense in Japan.
True.
Right.
All right.
All right.
Thanks for listening, guys.
Thank you.
