WHAT IF YOUR FUTURE SELF COULD WARN YOU? | WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST? — Episode 9

What if your future self could warn you?

Imagine waking up tomorrow and finding a message from yourself ten years in the future.

One sentence:

“Don’t make the same mistake I made.”

Would you believe it?

And if you did… would you listen?

In Episode 9 of WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST?, Jonah Whitmore explores a psychological thought experiment about the future, identity, choice, and trust.

If your future self knew exactly what was going to happen to you, would you want to know?

What if changing one decision erased the future that sent the warning?

And what if some mistakes have to happen before we can become the person we eventually are?

This episode explores a simple but unsettling question:

Would you trust your future self — or yourself right now?

WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST? is a psychological thriller podcast by Jonah Whitmore about memory, identity, consciousness, choice, and trust.

Sometimes the question isn't what will happen.

It's who you will trust when it does.

Imagine you wake up tomorrow, and there's amessage waiting for you. No name, no explanation,
just one sentence. Don't make the same mistake Imade. Pretty strange, right? You read it again,
and then you notice something even stranger. Themessage came from you. Not someone pretending to
be you. You. Ten years from now. Would you believeit? Honestly, I don't know if I would.
Because think about what that would mean. Thisversion of you knows things you don't know yet.
Who you're going to meet. What you're going tolose. Maybe even the decision you're about to
make. And then they tell you, don't do it. That'sit. No explanation, just a warning from someone
who supposedly knows exactly how your life turnsout. Would you listen? Or would you think,
no, I need to find out for myself. Here's where itgets interesting.
What if you listen? You change your decision. Youavoid the person. You take a different job.
You move somewhere else. And because of that, thefuture you saw never happens. So who sent
the message? Your future self? Or a future thatyou just erased? I know, it sounds impossible,
but that's what makes the idea so uncomfortable. We usually think of the future as something
that's waiting for us. Like it's already somewhereahead. We're just walking toward it. But maybe
it doesn't work that way. Maybe every choicecreates another version of what comes next.
You turn left instead of right. You say yesinstead of no. You trust someone. Or you don't.
And suddenly, your life is moving in a completelydifferent direction.
Now imagine your future self gives you onewarning. Just one. You can ask one question.
Anything. What would you ask? Would you ask aboutmoney? Love? Your family? Your biggest mistake?
Or would you ask something much simpler? Am Igoing to be okay? Because maybe that's what
we'd really want to know. Not what happens. Justwhether we're going to be okay when it does.
But here's the problem. If your future self warnedyou about everything, would you still
become the person you're supposed to become? Maybesome mistakes have to happen. Maybe some
things can only be understood after we've livedthrough them. So if your future self appeared
tomorrow and told you exactly what was going tohappen, would you trust them? Or would you trust
yourself? This is what would you trust. And maybethat's the question underneath all of this. Not
what will happen to us, but who we choose to trustwhile we're getting there.
