What If Your Identity Is Built on a Memory That Never Happened? | WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST? — Episode 8

What if one of the memories that made you who you are never actually happened?

Think about a memory you know by heart.

A conversation.

A moment from childhood.

Something someone said to you.

A moment that changed the way you see yourself.

Now imagine discovering that your memory is wrong.

Not one detail.

The whole thing.

The conversation never happened.

The person wasn't there.

Maybe the event itself never happened at all.

But you still remember it.

And maybe that memory helped shape your life.

It influenced who you trusted.

Who you avoided.

The choices you made.

The person you became.

So what happens when you discover that the memory you built part of your identity around... wasn't real?

Here's the strange part:

A memory can be false and still change your life.

The event wasn't real.

But your fear was.

Your decision was.

The relationship that followed was real.

Everything that happened afterward was real.

So maybe a false memory doesn't have to be true to become part of who you are.

Now imagine you could erase it.

You could replace the false memory with the truth.

But what if changing the memory changed you too?

Would you choose the truth?

Or would you keep the memory because, true or not, it helped make you who you became?

And if a false memory can become part of your identity...

what would you trust?

Your memory?

The evidence?

Or the person you've become?

WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST? is a series of short psychological thought experiments about memory, identity, consciousness, choice, and trust.

Each episode explores a simple question that can become surprisingly difficult once you start thinking about it.

What if one of the memories that made you who youare never actually happened?
Think about a memory you know by heart. Maybesomething from childhood. A conversation with
someone you loved. A moment when somethingchanged. You can probably see it in your mind
right now. You remember where you were. Maybe youremember what the room looked like. Maybe
you even remember exactly what the other personsaid. And you've never had a reason to doubt it.
Why would you? It happened to you. Or at least, that's what you believe.
Now imagine something strange happens. You findout that your memory is wrong.
Not a little wrong. Not one detail. The wholething. The conversation never happened. The
person wasn't there. Maybe the event itself neverhappened at all. And that's the disturbing part.
You still remember it. Clearly. You might haveremembered it for 10 years. Maybe 20. You may
have told the story to other people. Maybe thatmemory even explains something about you. Why
you don't trust people. Why you avoid certainsituations. Why you made a decision that changed
your life. And suddenly, you discover that thememory you built all of that around wasn't real.
And this is where things get uncomfortable.Because if that memory helped make you who youare,
what happens when you take it away? Maybe youbecame cautious because of something you remember
happening. Maybe you stopped trusting someonebecause of something you remember them doing.
Maybe you chose a career, a relationship, acompletely different life because of one moment.
But if that moment never happened, did you makethose choices for the wrong reason?
And if you did, does that mean you're a differentperson than you thought?
Here's the strange thing. A memory can be falseand still change your life.
The event wasn't real. But your fear was. Yourdecision was. The relationship that followed
was real. Everything that happened afterward wasreal. So maybe a false memory doesn't have to be
true to become part of your life. And that raisesa much bigger question. How much of who you are
is based on what actually happened? And how muchis based on the story you remember?
Now imagine you could fix it. You could erase thefalse memory. You would know what really happened.
But there's a catch. That memory helped make youwho you became. Remove it and maybe you changetoo.
So what would you choose? The truth or the personyou became because you believed the memory?
And if you knew the truth would change you, wouldyou still want to know it?
Maybe that's the real problem. We think we're madeof our experiences. But we're also made of
03:04
the stories we remember about those experiences. And sometimes the story is wrong. So imagine
discovering that one of the memories that made youwho you are never happened. Would you want toknow?
Would you erase the memory? Or would you keep it?Because true or not, it helped make you who you
became. And if a false memory can become part ofyour identity, what would you trust? Your memory,
the evidence, or the person you've become?
