In this episode, I reflect on the invisible "tests" or personal values that quietly shape how we connect with other people.
Since becoming a parent, I've met more Japanese families raising children in Switzerland. Seeing grandparents send children's magazines, books, or clothes from Japan sometimes gives me a surprising sense of familiarity. Small details—such as the books we grew up with, our parents' approach to education, or even the radio programs we enjoy—can reveal shared backgrounds that make us feel instantly connected.
These aren't conscious judgments, but subtle signs that tell us we may have grown up with similar values and ways of seeing the world.
Towards the end of the episode, I mention Shūsaku Endō's novel Silence and its film adaptation, reflecting on the idea of the fumi-e—not only as a historical symbol, but as a metaphor for the invisible values and beliefs that shape who we are and how we relate to others.
