🌏 For our international listeners:
Welcome to The STEM Guys' Life Board Meeting.
Tomato just returned from a four-day business trip to Numazu — three nights of client dinners, no kitchen access, and a growing sense that his body was quietly deteriorating.
He didn't get sick. But the following weekend was entirely consumed by recovery. That's the hidden cost of extended business travel.
Three problems: not enough vegetables (client dinners offer edamame and not much else), no exercise (he came in a suit, with no running shoes), and degraded sleep (a business hotel mattress is nobody's first choice).
His current solution: buy three large cans of tomato juice at a convenience store upon arrival and drink one per night. That's it. Why tomato juice over vegetable juice blends? The blended "one day's worth of vegetables" drinks are loaded with added sugar, which puts strain on the liver. Tomato juice — unsalted, unsweetened — is honest. It's not exciting, but it works.
Supporting gear: an eye mask for blocking light during sleep and on long flights, and compression bags for packing light enough to skip the rolling suitcase entirely.
Tomato acknowledges freely that this setup is minimal. A hotel with a gym would help. A travel pillow might help. But he's never actually seen anyone carry a personal pillow onto a bullet train, which raises questions about whether that advice is real.
The episode ends as an open question to listeners: how do you maintain your condition on a long business trip? Any tips welcome.
