Hi, my name is 8番 and this is my podcast, Ramen, gyoza and a bit of chaos. And today I've got a
guest speaker, my nephew. Hello, Deb. Hello. Hello. It's my nephew. And are you 16 now or 17?
16. 16. And you're a high school student? Year 11. Year 11. And you like, I'd better say you are an
Australian. I'm a Japanese, but you're my husband's brother's son anyway. And you do like
Japanese anime and manga. So I wanted to ask you about those things today. Yep. Oh, good. Yeah.
Yeah, I have watched a lot. I have posters in my room and stuff. Am I allowed to swear?
Eh? Ah, yeah. Yeah, you can swear, but I'm not too bad. It's okay. If you swear, I can just put
what was that? E mark. The beep. Yeah. Yeah. What was that? What was that short for?
Explicit. Explicit. I can put that mark. So that's okay. All right. Sick.
All right. Was there anything else you wanted to add on to the? That's fine. That's fine. Okay.
So can I ask you about your best anime or manga? If you can pick. If I could pick. Probably Jojo's,
honestly. Berserk. Berserk. I really, really like Berserk. Berserk is Berserku in Japanese.
But anyway, because I got some Japanese listeners who can speak English. So I'm just
explaining. Berserk. Yeah. Okay. Yeah, that's the one. Yeah. That's the one with the guy with
the giant sword. Yeah. And the author passed away recently. Is that it? Yeah, that's the one.
He worked with another dude and he's kind of taken over the project recently.
So it's still getting updated. Just like, you know, a lot slower. I'm pretty sure.
So you watched all the anime or? No, I don't. I watched the
1960, 1996 version. Wow. I think. And then I tried watching the newer one.
Okay. Yeah, the new ones. I don't like the new ones that much. Oh, you don't like the new one.
Okay. So the older one was better. The old ones are good.
Oh, okay. It's not like I don't like 3D anime, right? I do. I like Dorohedora and Trigon
Stampede is pretty cool. Oh, have you watched it? I watched the first episode. Okay. Yeah.
Because I'm interested. No, it's good. You should. But it's not like I don't like 3D. It's just,
you know, really bad. I don't know. There's no other way to put it.
Okay. So have you read the manga too then? Yeah, I've finished. I'm up to date. Like 300
Discussion of dark anime/manga
chapters. Wow. I've grinded it. It's pretty cool. And why do you like it so much?
Oh, it's very different. Like, unlike, you know, Jojo's and all the other mangas, like,
up the top, it's a lot more dark and stuff. So it's more like,
you know, in your face. There's not many like that, you know? Like, have you read Chainsaw Man?
Of course, the few volumes, the books. Yeah. It's the author of Chainsaw Man wrote a book
previous to it called Fire Punch. That's like what I'd assimilate Berserk. Okay.
Yeah. I like those two a lot. Not because of like what's in them, but because it's like,
you know, just very different. And the vibe of both those books are like, kind of
not as lighthearted as everything else. I just like more dark, like, you know?
So with Berserk, there are many comedy stuff in there?
There is comedy stuff. It's kind of like, so like, yeah, so they have a character called
Puck, who's like a little elf fairy thing. And he's kind of there for like the comedic relief.
Okay. But like, it's not always, you know, happy and stuff. Like, it does get really
surprisingly dark sometimes. Not yet. It's still my favourite book. Okay.
Introduction to Berserk and personal experience
Yeah. Yeah. When did you start reading or when did you first watch the Red Berserk?
Anime? Yeah. Oh, Berserk? Berserk. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I think I watched the 1996 version like
two years ago. Two years ago. Okay. Yeah. And a big event. Basically, that's just the backstory
of his, the main character, Guts. Oh, yeah. You don't want to spoil anything because I'm not the
people. But a big event happened called the Eclipse. I was like, well, what happens after
that? So I just kind of gave it a month. And then I started to read the book. And I was like, you
know, pretty cool. I don't know what to say. I don't want to say anything. Yeah, you don't want
to spoil anything. I think I watched one of the newer anime or movies. I can't remember.
But because I didn't know the actual background that much. So yeah, I don't think I got into it.
It's a lot like Vinland Saga. The anime adaptation isn't that bad. But apparently,
the book is a lot better. And I was like, what I was going to read next before I got taken over by
all the other books I'm reading. I have a list of manga I need to go through.
Manga availability in libraries and schools
Oh, you know, you can borrow manga from libraries these days.
Yeah, you can. But also like...
Oh, yeah, you can do it online too. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah, I go to Burnside Library quite regularly now, but it's got a fair bit of
Japanese books and manga. But they're actually Japanese. They do have the translated versions
too. So my school library has been trying to introduce some manga into it. But our school
is kind of weird with some of that stuff. And they don't like showing anything above
like G rating stuff. So nothing really intrigues me. Don't get me wrong. I'm fine with reading
some romance, you know. But I prefer like just horror stuff, like brutal manga. Junji Ito stuff,
you know. Okay. Ito Junji. Yeah. Horror stuff. So yeah, they wouldn't have horror stuff in there.
No. No, they don't. Or they would never have Dorohedoro or Chainsaw Man or Berserk.
Oh, they might have Chainsaw Man because that's really popular. Oh, will they?
Like, I think, oh, well, I have the first volume here. So if I look at the back of it,
I don't think so anymore because he's just topless with a collar on. But, you know.
I wonder if librarians actually check the contents before they introduce it.
I doubt that. Yeah, it's not school friendly, Chainsaw Man isn't.
Age appropriateness of manga
Yeah, no. But I do definitely recommend people at your age, though, like those manga.
Yeah. Like people my age would enjoy it, just not that much younger, I don't think.
Yeah. Yeah, I guess. Because high school starts from what age? 12, 13, 13?
Yeah, I think it's like, sorry, I think it's like 11 now. I don't know which grade yet.
We introduced like a new policy in SA where high school starts when you're 11 now.
Okay. So you're 7. So I think it's like 11 or 12.
Yeah. 11.
I mean, in Japan, though, Demon Slayer, Kimetsu no Yaiba,
that, like, little kids are watching that anime and getting into it. So, I mean, that's not really
PG rated, eh? It's probably, I don't know, R-15?
PG? At least PG. Parental guidance. Yeah, at least.
No, no, no, no, no. The first episode is...
Yeah, there's lots of killing in there.
You come back with a slaughtered family, man.
Yeah, yeah.
That's not PG. That's fairly even.
Yeah, so probably R-15, yeah?
Yeah.
TV Viewing Habits and Introduction to Anime
But yeah, because they broadcast it in Japan on public TV, so kids can just watch it.
It's the same in here, isn't it?
I mean, no.
Well, in Adelaide, it's kind of like the TV is just full of, like, news and stuff.
It's not interesting. You've got, like, the news channels, the home renovations.
Yeah, true. Yeah, cooking.
Little, little, little, little kids.
That's about it. Yeah, and people don't watch TV these days. So I hardly watch TV.
I only watch TV when I go to doctor, see a doctor or something. There's a TV running at the
waiting room.
Yeah.
I mean, I was younger. SBS used to have Ghost in the Shell or Cowboy Bebop.
Oh, yeah.
No, not Cowboy. Oh, yeah, Cowboy Bebop.
Samurai Champloo.
They have the first bit of One Piece on TV.
Yeah.
But other than that, it's just not there.
Okay.
I remember because when I was young, that was kind of like the first anime I watched
was One Piece.
One Piece.
And then my dad's like, oh, yeah, you can go on to this site to watch it all.
So I ended up watching One Piece until the characters pissed me off enough for me to quit.
I got to episode 700, though. That was pretty good.
Oh, wow.
So I didn't get pretty far in.
Yeah.
You were into Naruto at one point. Are you still into Naruto?
Discussion of Naruto
Really?
I still like it because I still like it a lot. It's just
I'm not my favorite anymore.
Okay.
Naruto kind of annoys me now.
It's just a lot of characters in Naruto just push my buttons. I don't know.
Are they annoying?
They're just annoying.
Okay. Yeah, I haven't really watched or read Naruto that much.
I probably read first a few books, maybe.
Hmm. Because some of my podcast friends really like Naruto.
No, I'm saying the characters are annoying, but I still really like the show.
I'm thinking about reading it once I finish other stuff, but
I don't even know what I'm reading. I have a list on my phone.
Not the priority.
Not the priority. I already know the story and stuff. It's a good story.
Yeah.
Okay. Yeah, I should eventually get into Naruto, but it's just so long.
Dude, it's hard to casually start watching it.
There's guides to watch. Oh, you know, Naruto,
Watching Anime Without Fillers
if you cuddle the feelers, it's only like 400 episodes, I think.
Yeah. There's a version, just the main bits. Someone edited it.
Oh, there's like, for all shonen anime, like One Piece, Bleach, Naruto, you know,
all the big ones.
Lots of feelers.
It's called Naruto Kai, you know, just add Kai to the end of any long anime.
If you add Kai to the end of it, there's like,
that's what's saying, like kicking out all the feelers kind of thing.
Oh, is that right? Okay. Yeah, I didn't know that. Thanks for the info.
I'm just actually checking that out.
Okay.
Yeah, One Piece Kai, yeah. Any long show, if you just type up Kai, you know,
it'll give you the feeler list.
Yeah, that's actually good. So I can just watch whatever important bits.
I mean, sometimes feelers are really good.
No, no.
Yeah, I guess.
I don't like any feelers.
Okay.
Edge of Tomorrow and Manga
There was a movie. What was it called? It was Edge of Tomorrow, I think.
Yeah.
Is that the one looping?
Yeah, it's a looping one.
Respawn.
Yeah, that was based on a manga.
Yeah, yeah. I read the manga, but not based on the novel originally.
Yeah, yeah. I read that.
This is what actually got me into manga, I think.
Oh, is that right?
So I watched Edge of Tomorrow with my dad, right?
And he was like, Devlin, you know, this is based off a manga, right?
I was like, oh, really?
But no way. He's like, yeah, I'll get it if you...
We can get it if you want.
It's like, yeah, sure.
The manga is honestly a lot better than the movie, in my opinion.
Okay. What was the movie live action one?
They're completely different.
Like, it takes the concept, basically, and that's it.
But the story's different, the ending's different, the boxes are different.
But they're called the same thing.
They're still called mimics and stuff.
But mimics in the movies are like these black mass of whipping tendrils.
Where in the books, there's cylindrical ball with spikes coming out of it.
So they are different.
Okay.
So that was...
When was it? When did you watch that movie then?
Five-ish years ago.
Five-ish years ago?
11 or 12, when I was 11 or 12.
So I was always into dark stuff.
Discussion on Dorohedoro Manga Series
Is that any good?
Oh, I was into dark stuff.
So I'm still into dark stuff.
So it's okay.
Exactly.
I love Dorohedoro, so that's fine.
Dorohedoro is very good.
I read the book up to where I got the anime.
Okay.
And I saw the little dumpling guy.
It was pretty good.
Gyoza otoko, yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
He was some...
I don't think I've read enough to actually like him yet, but you know.
Yeah, yeah.
So yeah, I don't remember.
Is it like tens?
I don't know how many books were covered in anime.
The first half, maybe?
The first?
Wait, did it end?
It ended.
It's got 23 books.
Yeah, right.
You know, the anime only went to episode 12.
And then the 13th episode, it was kind of like, you know, all the fillers in between.
Was it?
Like, so you know how...
Oh, yes, yes, yes.
Yeah, yeah, the point chapters.
Yeah, manga has the ones at the end, the bonus chapter.
Yeah.
Yeah, they had all of those too.
That was kind of cool.
And that's where I saw the little gremlin thing, you know?
Oh, the gyoza guy, yeah.
That was cool.
Yeah, okay.
Hmm.
Popularity of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
Like, any of your friends into manga and anime at all?
Is it like popular thing or just still kind of otaku, nerdy thing?
It is very nerdy, otaku, like weird kind of stuff.
But like, if you just say, oh, I enjoyed this, you know, if you don't talk about it,
like 24-7, no one will really give a crap.
Like, I have some friends who really, really like JoJo's.
Like, JoJo's is like the only anime they've actually watched.
It's honestly just, in my school, kind of everyone's just seen it.
JoJo?
And they, yeah, JoJo.
Like, it's like, if they haven't seen any, and if they've seen an anime,
they've already seen JoJo in my school.
It's like, my best mate Choco, he's only seen JoJo.
And I only, like, just convinced him to, like, read Berserk and shit.
But like, yeah, he, well, it's a, well, you know,
JoJo is the only, like, actual popular mainstream anime in Australia.
Around my area, I guess.
I don't know.
Yeah, because I thought, I always thought Naruto, Bleach, One Piece are, like, the...
I think they're, um...
Mean ones.
Discussion of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
Believe it or not, they're very, like, Asian culture kind of stuff.
Ah, okay.
And with JoJo, it's kind of all around the world.
Okay, wow.
It's a lot different from 10 years ago.
Because JoJo was like, huh?
I don't know about JoJo.
Everyone was into those Naruto, Bleach, One Piece.
I mean, they finished in the last 10 years, I guess.
But JoJo's still going.
I read JoJolion.
Yeah, it didn't...
The ninth season started.
No, well, part six kind of ended the first bit.
I think it's just, I think the first six parts is like JoJo's,
and then JoJo's part two, everything onward, you know?
Yeah, yeah, because it's...
Yeah, I can't really say too much because it becomes a spoiler.
They're never...
The two parts of JoJo, I'm just going to say, they're never going to, you know, connect.
Ah, it's sort of...
They're always going to be different, you know?
Yeah, yeah, I understand that.
Like, the only time they connected was in a fan-made game.
I don't think anything's going to...
Okay.
Eyes Over Heaven, you heard of it?
Sorry? No, no, no.
Yeah, it was on PS4, if anyone wants to look it up.
Pretty cool.
Balancing Parenting and Hobbies
Okay, yeah, I haven't been able to play games ever since I gave birth to my kids, so...
One day, when they go to school, I guess I hope I have more time to do, you know,
watch anime and play games.
I still have a bit of time to read manga, so...
I've been reading manga.
You can just read while supervising them, you know?
That's what I do.
I sort of do it every now and then, but it's...
You raise one year old child and you understand.
Okay, yeah, all right, I don't think I'll find out what that's like for a while.
Maybe in 20 years time, you will find out.
20 years is a bit long.
Yeah, but these days, people give birth to kids, like, around 30.
Yeah, so 15 years time, maybe.
Oh, yeah, you can decide to have kids earlier, that's fine, it's your choice.
End of Topic and Closing Remarks
I don't want to be talking about anime, man.
What else have I... what was some interesting...
I don't know.
Don't have any topics right now.
Anything I want to ask?
Yeah, I was quite surprised Jojo was the one everyone kind of watched.
It's interesting.
Less Japanese, I think, you know?
Yeah, although, like, part 4 was based in Japan, but I guess it's not that Japanese still.
I mean, compared to other stuff, yeah.
Like, it's very not, you know...
Like, if you compare it to any anime, like Mob Psycho or something,
you know, there's two schools are very, like, you know, different.
It's quite a bunch.
They don't have similarities.
Oops, yeah, I think I...
Ah, we got 10 more minutes to go.
So we might wrap up soon.
Um, sorry, I saw One Punch Man.
Was it?
Does anyone watch it?
Oh.
Not really?
I don't really talk to many people at school.
But I'm pretty sure, like, people have seen it.
Like, I'm pretty sure it's just Jojo's mainly.
I don't know.
I wouldn't be surprised.
I think One Punch Man's a bit weird, though.
I mean, I'm saying that and Jojo isn't.
I don't know, it's weird.
Um, have you been to Avcon and stuff?
Avcon?
No, I don't tend to talk about or go out about anime too much.
Like, yeah, it's like, you know, what I watch kind of thing.
But it's not like...
Like, if I'm gonna, like, talk about it an extreme amount,
I kind of need friends which will also talk about it an extreme amount.
Like, they only talk about Jojo's a stupid amount, like, that's it.
Like, I'm either talking about Jojo's or they get annoyed
that I'm bringing up some random show they've never watched, you know?
Okay, so you're not interested in doing any cosplay or drawing?
I'll do cosplay.
I would do cosplay, alright?
You wanna do cosplay?
Me and my friends have this thing where we're gonna get really, really jacked and buff
and dress up as Jojo characters.
That would be heaps cool.
That would be cool.
Yeah.
Because I see the Jojo cosplayers online
and they have, like, they're painted on muscles, you know?
I'm just gonna become a bodybuilder and just walk up in my Kakyoin outfit, you know?
Let's get the shit out of everyone.
Build up your muscles.
Be great.
Okay, when you do cosplay, let me know because I wanna check it out.
Alright, I'll send you the pictures of me in my Kakyoin suit.
Yeah.
No, what was the guy with the echos?
Cosplay talk
Which one?
Echos, echos, Koichi.
Ah, Koichi.
You wanna be Koichi?
You're too tall to be Koichi.
All my friends are massive.
Yeah.
Like, they are the Jojo heights.
I need to, like, be someone smaller at least.
And if you actually...
Oh no, have you heard of this?
Koichi's actually not that much taller than his girlfriend.
I think her name's Yumiko.
Yumiko, yeah.
He's only, like, a couple inches smaller.
It's just the way, you know, he's drawn.
Is he?
Like, his canon height isn't even that much, isn't that small.
It's, like, it's kind of ridiculous.
So who do you wanna be?
Who do you wanna cosplay, then?
Which character?
If there's no restriction.
No, no restrictions, no restrictions.
I reckon I'll be Johnny Joestar, you know.
Yay, you should be able to.
Johnny or Diavolo, you know.
Diavolo, wow.
That Diavolo's clothes is pretty, pretty weird.
He has pants, his pants.
You know, that's covering everything.
Fishnet, fishnet on.
No, no, no, that's the other guy, that's the other guy.
Diavolo.
Wait, Diavolo had a big...
Diavolo is the pink, pink...
Yeah.
Long hair, yeah?
There's two characters with pink long hair, though.
Pink long hair?
You mean Doppio?
Doppio?
Yeah, Doppio, yeah, exactly.
Doppio, you wanna be Doppio?
I wanna be Doppio.
Doppio, okay.
I don't know how am I pronouncing the name right,
but in Japanese we call him Doppio, or Doppio, I can't remember.
Doppio.
It's all Italian.
I'm gonna be both of them, you know.
Yeah, that'll be cool.
Yeah, you'd better, yeah, do that.
And then when I walk behind a pillar and take my top off,
and then I become Diavolo.
Diavolo.
It'll be epic.
Yay.
Yeah.
That's the plan.
Oh, hang on, sorry, I remembered Koichi's girlfriend name.
It's Yukako.
Yukako, we were calling her Yumiko.
Yukako-san.
I don't know, whatever.
Yeah, whatever.
Finishing up
Yeah, anyway, I think if there's five more minutes,
I might just wrap it up now.
If you don't mind, or did you want to do another session,
or are you happy to finish here for now?
I'm fine here for now.
Here for now?
Maybe we can do another catch-up
when you wanna talk about any anime next time.
Yes.
So it's probably just gonna end up talking about JoJo's again,
but I'll be fine.
I will just listen to you, because it's pretty interesting.
I'm finding now what it's like for the real teenager
to watch anime and manga.
Oh, wait, wait, there is one thing.
Hardcore fans and shipping
So like, there is some pretty hardcore weebs at our school.
Yeah.
They're, you know, they're kind of like...
Oh, I don't know how to put this.
It's almost like they're just really weird.
Like, I don't know, I tried hanging out with them
and talking about anime with them.
Yeah.
And as soon as I have an opposing opinion,
they just lose their shit.
What?
Like, I'm like, oh, I think Bakugou and...
What's his Deku?
They're really cute together.
My Hero Academia.
Yeah, they're those people.
They're those people.
Ah, yeah, I think you mentioned that previously.
The fans of My Hero Academia are quite hardcore.
They're like shipping two straight guys together.
You know, like thinking two straight men will like each other.
It kind of makes sense with Jojo,
since they all look gay, but these guys...
You know the world of Beelder?
You've heard of it?
No, yeah, you don't need to touch it.
Yeah, you can stay away from it.
That's okay.
You don't, you don't.
I mean, like, it's mainly for girls who are into BL thing.
So they like coupling,
making a couple out of characters of manga or anime.
Ah, yes, yes.
They like creating their own stories.
They're a little fan fiction.
Yeah, fan fictions, they're cool.
Fan fiction, okay.
That's what's cool.
There is Jojo...
Not all fan fictions isn't a good name.
Like spin-offs of like, you know,
the most popular one I'm pretty sure is
Josuke and Kakyoin's Sister.
Josuke?
And Kakyoin's Sister.
Josuke and Kakyoin's Sister?
Yeah, Josuke and Kakyoin's Sister.
You mean Jotaro?
No, Josuke.
Josuke?
But they're different parts.
Kakyoin's in part three and...
Oh, okay.
It's Kakyoin's Sister, not Kakyoin.
Okay, because they're a bit younger.
Okay.
Then it is...
Discussion of a JoJo's Bizarre Adventure spin-off
Whole Horse is there too, for some reason.
Whole Horse?
Yeah, he's...
Ah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
I know the spin-off, yes.
You know, it's like Josuke and Whole Horse.
It also has Kakyoin's Sister in it.
Yeah, yeah.
It's like those three people are the main guys.
I thought it was cool.
It's like I was going to read that.
Yeah, I was meaning to read it.
I haven't got into it yet.
It's one and a half minutes.
Closing and farewell
So I might just finish off here if you're okay.
Or did you want to talk another one?
I don't mind.
That's fine.
We'll catch up like next week or something, I reckon.
Yeah.
If I get time.
Otherwise, yeah, we will do it later.
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah.
Um, anyway, so thanks for joining, Deb.
No problem.
And thanks for listening and bye for now.
