Welcome to Kevin's English Room Podcast.
Hello.
Hello.
Hello, hello.
Hello, hello.
All right.
This is from...
Korokoro-san.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Well, to answer your question, Hitchhiking is English, yes.
Okay, okay.
Wait, don't you have experience in Hitchhiking?
Yes, I did.
Wow.
I did it when I was... the last day of our university.
Last day of your... okay, okay.
I mean, what's your opinion on that from someone who has done it?
How accurate is that?
I mean, that's true. It's like saying, it's true.
It's the fact that we didn't pay anything.
They were kind enough to...
To offer.
Yeah.
Well, yeah, if you say so, then yeah.
I feel like all of the drivers were kind of happy that they helped people.
They help young people and they have time together.
And they've got to, you know, have conversation together and like talk about ourselves.
And spend one kind of special moment together.
It's rare that that happens, right?
Yeah, yeah.
So they told me that one guy, they said like...
Okay.
Yeah, they wanted to do that experience.
So it was a dream come true for him too.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
So I don't, I mean, so that was my impression.
Okay, so it wasn't like, I'm using their kindness.
Yeah, I mean, yeah, we didn't, we didn't.
Well, I mean, it's true.
We didn't pay anything and they were kind enough.
So if you say so, then yeah.
How long were you in the car?
Like how far did that guy take you?
So, oh, that guy...
How long was the whole entire journey?
The whole entire journey was from Tokyo.
Well, precisely Kanagawa, but Tokyo to Osaka.
Ooh, yeah.
That's long.
The duration was that.
And from Osaka to get back to Tokyo.
Okay.
It took us, I guess, how long?
Like I started from 2, 3 p.m.
And then we arrived at Osaka in the midnight.
Oh, okay.
I think like 12 hours in total, I guess.
But you still made it during the day.
Not during the day, but like...
Yeah, but...
It didn't take you 24 hours.
No, no.
Wow.
We were really, really lucky.
We were lucky.
And then the return trip was...
We began the trip from kind of morning.
And then it took us like a whole day kind of.
Yeah, we arrived there in like early morning at Tokyo.
So...
Wow.
Yeah.
But yeah, it was fun.
It was fun.
I mean, if you don't want to...
First of all, you don't do that.
Like on like a...
You wouldn't do that, right?
Yeah.
And if you're a driver side, you don't want to do that.
You don't have to.
Right.
You can just ignore them and just...
And that's perfectly okay.
It's fair.
Yeah, it's a fair thing.
If you want to, then you can offer.
And so, it's not something like somebody is, you know...
What would be a great example of a...
Act?
Hmm...
I don't know.
A kind of act?
Yeah.
So, for example, you're doing...
Let's say, movie editing job as an independent freelance guy.
And then let's say we've been friends for a really, really long time.
And then you do like a movie.
Yeah.
We've been friends for a really, really long time.
And then I come to you one day and,
Hey, you know we're friends, right?
And then can you do this for like 5,000 yen?
Okay.
For like two hours, like video editing.
Or like for free for this time?
Can we be friends?
And then you were kind enough.
Yeah, of course, we're friends.
I can do that.
I have skills and do this for me.
And oh, thank you so much.
Thank you, thank you.
And then the next week, I come again.
Yeah, man, can you...
I see.
You know.
That to me, like it sounds...
It's not something fair to both of the people.
Okay, I see.
That's not good.
I see.
Something like that?
Yeah, something like that.
I see.
Yeah, I see.
It's just me.
My side is like getting like profit every time.
And then you just work for free.
I see.
Well, for your end, maybe you're keeping friendship,
so-called friendship.
Maybe that would be the merit,
but it's not true friendship, you know.
Okay, yeah.
Well, I guess that's really different from the hitchhiking situation.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
No one's pressured into picking that person up.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And so...
Yeah.
It's just...
If you don't want to, you don't do that.
Yeah.
You know, that's just a fair matching, so...
Yeah.
Anything freaky happened?
Freaky, huh?
Anything wild happened during that trip?
So in midnight, we were in the service area.
Okay.
I think that was Hamamatsu or somewhere.
We kind of lost.
It was midnight and nobody was around us.
Oh, okay.
Maybe we have to like stay here for all night.
But there were like one...
I think he was from Pakistan.
Oh.
Speaks a little, really little Japanese.
Okay.
And he came to us and like,
you guys are doing the hitchhiking,
and if you want to, you can ride up my car.
And we were like, oh, thank you, man.
Yeah.
And then we were so appreciative and went to his car.
Okay.
It was a big truck.
Oh, okay.
He was a unso-gyo no hito.
And he got a like big truck.
Okay.
Which has only two seats.
Oh, okay.
And one, you know, it was...
I'm not sure it was seat or not.
It's just...
It's like a middle space.
Yeah, yeah.
And then he got many things on seats.
Yeah.
One seat, driver seats.
Okay.
And then we sat.
How many of you were there?
We were two.
Okay, okay.
And there were like two seats in one place.
Middle area.
Yeah.
We had to fit in those places,
and there were many things inside.
Okay.
Just crammed in there.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Okay.
And then we were like,
oh, I think we're not fitting in the space.
Because we were two,
and I feel like it looks there are only two seats in here.
So, yeah, I appreciate your kindness,
but maybe we shouldn't do this.
But he was like,
Okay.
And then he let us, you know, get in the car.
Okay.
Yeah.
We drove like 30 minutes to the next, you know, service area.
Okay, okay.
But it was wild, you know.
So the fact that it was crammed, that's it?
That was the free part?
Or was there something else?
Yeah, like we didn't have any like...
Oh, like seatbelts on?
Yeah, because it wasn't that proper seat.
I mean, they have like little...
Like a baby seatbelt?
Yeah.
But that's it.
So we were like kind of...
Just, okay.
It felt like your life was in danger.
Yeah, yeah.
If something were to happen,
sort of like, for example, like an accident,
then maybe your life was in danger.
Right, right, right.
And he didn't speak Japanese that fluently.
So we were like,
Are you okay?
Like we're heading to this direction,
and do you know where it is?
But he was a really, really good guy.
He said he made a company in Japan.
He came from Pakistan
and built his own business as a...
運送 and like logistic things.
And he said he's the boss of the company.
Wow.
Yeah.
He was a pretty impressive guy, actually.
Wow.
So I remember.
I see.
Or the other day,
returning from Osaka,
we were in, I think that was Kusatsu.
It's in between like Kyoto, Osaka area.
Yes.
And then that was midnight.
Yes.
There were like one car came across.
Okay.
You know, there were like...
Yeah, yeah.
Yes, yes, yeah.
And then like silver
Okay.
You know, the smoke,
Yeah.
Black, you know.
And then they got a...
You know, like a vent or something
came in front of us.
Okay.
Like window opens.
Okay.
Looks like really yanky guy.
Looks sketchy and very...
Looks sketchy, you know,
like 金髪、like that.
Yeah.
眉毛、like really thin like that.
Like music turned up loud?
Yeah.
And you know, 助手席。
They were like,
like wearing a lady.
Like hair was like that.
Okay.
And like, like that.
Yeah.
Wearing dress like this.
Very...
Like that.
Yeah, yeah.
Very flashy.
Yes, yes, yes.
And we were like,
Oh...
And then he said like,
And we were like...
We were so scared.
Oh, yeah.
But you know,
but we entered.
Okay.
We said yes to him.
He would be like...
Yeah, yeah.
What was the experience of the guard like?
He didn't talk that much.
Oh, okay.
Silence.
And he was like,
So...
Yeah, but he was kind.
He was kind.
Okay.
And he was with his girl.
Yeah.
The girl didn't want us coming in the car.
Obviously.
Yeah, she was like...
She was like...
Yeah.
And the guy was like...
How old do you think he was?
I mean, he was pretty young.
I think like...
23? 22? 23?
So just around the same age.
Yeah, right, right.
Yeah, we talked about that.
Like, how old are you?
And then he...
I think he was like...
Younger than us or...
Something like that.
He owned his business.
Okay.
And he, you know, he shows like...
You know, kind of like that.
Something like that.
Yeah, sure, he was younger than us.
Yeah, that was funny.
That's funny, that's funny.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
But the lady was really like frustrated.
誰?
Yeah, I forget his name, but...
And we were like...
Yeah, because you know...
He was like...
And then like...
Very difficult position right here.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I think he was a kind guy.
Yeah.
What's it like to be inside those very obnoxiously loud cars?
Are the inside loud too?
I mean...
Well, yeah, it did.
It was loud.
Yeah.
But not as loud as from the outside.
Really? So the outside was louder?
Yeah.
It's more like...
Kind of enjoyable.
It was an enjoyable volume?
Yeah, it wasn't that loud.
Wow.
Yeah, I feel like outside you hear like a tail.
Yeah, it's obnoxiously loud.
Yeah, but inside you don't hear that much.
It's more like music.
What?
Oh, so those cars are meant to be heard outside then?
Shit.
Yeah, maybe.
Wow.
Maybe.
Wow.
I mean, it was loud though.
It was loud though.
Yeah, it was loud though.
But compared to like when you hear it from the outside, it was not as loud.
Yeah, yeah.
It wasn't something like, you know, when you go to the club.
Not like that.
It was just loud.
I see.
So they're entertainers then?
Yeah.
To be seen.
Right, right.
Maybe.
I see.
They got fluffy thing on the...
Handle?
Handle.
And they got like fluffy things inside.
Everywhere, you know.
Completely different life.
Yes, yes.
Interesting.
Interesting.
Yeah.
Hope you made it...
Not hope.
Glad you made it safe.
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
True, true.
So...
Right, there are some like incense too.
So you have to be careful in that.
Very careful.
Yeah, I'm not...
I can't say everybody should do that.
Oh, yeah.
A lot of risks involved as well.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
You have to think about it and you have to take your responsibility.
Absolutely.
Absolutely.
Thanks for listening guys.
Thank you.
Bye-bye.
