#5 Japanese anime “Dandadan” episode 1 review “what the heck was that?”

This podcast is about my life as a Canadian husband and my life as a Japanese child,

and how I, as a Japanese person, have come to realize that I belong to an international couple.

We just watched the first episode of Dandadan, which is a Japanese anime.

And this is kind of a little bit different from what we usually talk about, but it, yeah, like...

Yeah, we watched this anime because Jay wanted me to watch it.

Yeah, because...

What did I say when I first said it?

I said, I'm like, I don't know if it's good.

I don't know if it's bad.

I just know that it's weird.

Yes, that was weird.

That was weird, right?

Like, you didn't expect anything.

I didn't tell you what was going to happen.

I didn't tell you what it was about.

I just wanted you to see it.

Because it was weird when I first watched it.

How many episodes did you watch so far?

So far, there are only two episodes out.

So I've watched...

Only two?

Yeah, only two.

And I've never read the manga before, so I don't know how the story progresses.

You just watched the anime?

Yeah, I just watched the anime, and I watched the first episode.

And I mainly only started watching it because...

They did a really good choice of getting a Creepy Nuts song for the intro.

And the intro was so interesting.

That's what really grabbed my interest to watch it.

But when I first watched it, I did not expect that.

I didn't expect that.

Okay, first, can I say one thing?

Yeah, yeah.

Tell me your opinion.

No.

I don't watch many anime.

So the animation is a little bit not easy to watch for me.

Yeah, I understand.

Like...

I understand.

Like Parapara Manga.

Not smooth.

Certain anime do...

Like, there are certain...

There are certain anime out there that use the same kind of animation style.

Some of them being like Kill la Kill or FLCL.

These are ones that you've probably never watched.

And Dandaran uses the same kind of animation style.

But there's one thing that you'll notice.

While the animation style is a little bit weird...

You can tell the flow of the way they move is a lot better.

As if they used better animation.

Because usually with the better animation...

The cost goes up.

But the animation style is not as smooth.

That's what I'm saying.

But with something like that where they use less animation...

Or the animation style is a little bit more simple.

The flow of the way they move is a lot better.

Right?

Some One Piece episodes do the same thing.

Especially lately they've been using some One Piece episodes...

Where they have a little bit...

It's a little bit less detailed.

But because of the less detail...

They're able to have the characters flow a little bit more.

And I think that's what they did with this anime.

So definitely the anime...

When it comes to Dandaran animation style...

I like it.

But overall I'd label it a 6 out of 10.

In terms of animation style.

It's not easy to keep watching.

Yeah, I understand.

I don't know if it's going to change over time.

Which anime?

Actually, no I didn't.

You always say, oh this is the production.

Or this is MAPPA.

I actually don't know which studio does it.

Well, I'll check that later.

It's all about animation.

Do you want to talk about the story?

The story is...

I want to know what you think about it.

When I first watched that episode I was like...

I don't know if a lot of people will like this.

Because it's so different from what you'd usually watch.

But I think this anime...

I'm sure this anime is on a Japanese TV show right now.

You think so?

Yeah.

So I think it's popular?

I don't know yet.

I think their choice of getting Creepy Nuts to do the opening intro.

I think them doing that is probably the best...

Like one of the best decisions they made.

Because Creepy Nuts is so popular after...

What anime was that?

That was an anime called Mashure.

Mashure?

And that's a different anime.

And it's not in the same sense as this.

It's a lot different.

But the taste is...

Kind of similar.

Because Creepy Nuts songs are like...

I think that's what they were going for.

We need a song that represents how crazy our ideas are.

And I like the craziness of the anime.

But it was so unexpected.

And I think what a lot of people might be put off by...

Is the sense of sexuality that they had in the first episode.

So it was a little creepy.

It was, yeah.

Even for me.

I remember when I first watched this episode.

I was on the train going home.

And I'm watching this.

And I do not expect what's going on.

I just heard about this anime.

And I'm like, I'm going to watch it.

And I'm watching it on the train.

And these scenes are happening.

And I'm like, what the...

I'm looking around going, I can't watch this here.

It's weird.

You know?

Yeah, it was so weird.

But beyond that.

And from what I've heard.

Because, like I said, I've never read the manga.

What I've heard is that in the beginning, it kind of sets the tone.

Or sets the story up.

But after all, after that, it doesn't happen.

Those kind of scenes don't happen.

I think it was just to set the tone of why those aliens do what they do.

And what they were looking for.

Because it made sense.

They were like, we don't have females.

We don't have females.

And we don't have females anymore.

And we need to naturally reproduce again.

What we're going to do is we're going to take your organs.

That's what we're going to do.

They say banana.

Yeah, they're bananas.

But we're going to take your organs.

And then we're going to use them.

And then eventually be able to reproduce our own females.

That's their thinking.

So you're just kind of like, that's weird.

So the writer, or not the editor.

Mangaka.

Wants to talk about cron things.

Like robot.

So what they are, they're aliens.

The first episode.

Talk about what we can't see.

Yes.

So basically the way the story sets up is you have these two high school students.

And one of them believes in aliens.

But one of them believes in spiritual.

And so then they both give each other a contest.

Going like, hey, listen, you go here.

And I bet you you'll find aliens.

And then you go here.

And I bet you you'll find spiritual ghosts and stuff like that.

And so they both go.

And then they both realize.

Both are.

Both exist.

And.

Yeah.

And so.

Oh, okay.

Yeah.

But I.

I think what.

Like some of the plus.

I think the minus of the episode was just how.

Like I think when they added those kind of sexual elements into it.

I think it was like very.

Like unexpected.

Like I didn't.

Yeah.

But the thing is, I looked at the rating after.

And the rating said 16 plus.

Right.

So after I watched it, I was like, oh, okay.

I understand.

16 plus.

You know, these are.

This is meant for high school students and up.

Right.

So when I look at.

So then I start to look at this, the, the episode.

And I tried to think of it in a mind of like a.

Like a 17 year old or 18 year old.

And I'm like.

Obviously when I was a kid.

Yeah.

Like we had these kind of elements in.

Like when I was talking to my friends and stuff like that.

I'm sure women had the same.

Same idea.

But.

I'm.

I'm curious as to like.

Like the way.

That kind of situation.

Like the way that like the school was.

The way that what they were dressed as.

Like, is that possible in Japanese school?

Like the way they dressed.

Like the girls like doing their makeup and stuff like that.

Like do schools like that exist in Japan?

High school.

Do high schools like that exist?

Where like you can have girls like at their desk.

Doing their makeup.

Like.

I'm not sure.

Is that possible?

These days.

That's why I was wondering.

I'm like.

But did that happen back in the day?

Like, I don't know.

Like I always assume like Japanese society and Japanese high schools.

So.

Explain that please.

How?

Like so that kind of school that they go to is like a lower.

So they go to like a lower ranking school.

Where there's a little bit more.

As nothing.

As.

Like lower ranking as in like.

They're not that smart.

Like study.

Studying.

In study.

Yeah, in study.

I'm not sure.

They're not.

Right.

Smart.

Because like.

She.

The episode begins where she like just breaks up with her boyfriend.

And her boyfriend's talking about like.

All these sort of things.

Like love hotels and stuff like that.

And I'm like.

Wait.

Do they talk about like this?

Like.

Is that.

Like.

I'm asking you.

As a Japanese person.

Is this kind of like.

Can you see this happening.

With like a 17, 18 year old.

I guess.

You weren't that type of person.

No.

But like did.

Because like.

Like school.

Yeah.

Because.

I assume.

And also.

What shocked me.

Was.

That boyfriend.

Her ex-boyfriend.

Kicked her.

Yeah.

The violent.

Yeah.

Like would that happen.

At a Japanese school.

Like I.

When I watched that I was like.

I don't know if this is like.

A real representation of school.

Or.

A metaphor.

I don't know.

I'm not sure.

Like I don't know.

Like I.

That's why it was so intriguing to me.

I'm like.

Does this usually happen in Japan.

Like I assume like.

Like a lot of people.

A lot of.

Like listeners.

That.

You know.

Listen from like.

North America.

They're like.

And he doesn't say, but in his mind, he thinks that way.

Then Japanese thinks oh it's Takakura Ken. Really?

That's why I said oh Takakura Ken. And after that his name is Takakura Ken.

So that's why she oh yeah that's why she's like yeah so like what do you

think about that kind of um when some like when like Amagaka does that

where they that's a level of Japanese culture

remember the previously we talked about culture right

and like but like in the anime they brought out like Takakura Ken like

western people will not understand it the same way you do

but you completely see you see what I mean right

so you completely understand it and you you understand like the lines because

you know about the character and everything so we are talking about

this in the movie right right

so you understand that but western people will not

so we will we will like wikipedia Takakura Ken to

understand who that who they're talking about but we won't know

like when you were when when we were watching it and you're like and she's

he says the line and you're like Takakura Ken

oh and you're like oh because that's what he would say

that's a level of that's a level of like media like Japanese media culture

knowing culture yeah that western people would not understand

that's interesting and then that's not only language

so remember exactly that's the only language that's like

it all comes around it all comes it all

comes back yeah now you understand then to know each other

yeah language and culture exactly exactly now you understand so if

if anybody doesn't realize what we're talking about previously we had a

conversation about how like i was making the point that language is

more is not just about communication but it's also about like

the culture of the people and she didn't understand it but now

she's making that connection after watching this anime

because of this point right but that that's exactly what i was

trying to say like yeah it's interesting right

it's me now yeah it's me i don't sort of totally understand i could

i can't understand until i see this moment

yeah until you get like an example of it oh

like like hair turns to oh i see i understand

yeah exactly exactly yeah it's some example

trust yeah yeah but like um i i want to see more of this anime i

want to see where what it ends up becoming i'm not going to

read it but i want to see where it goes because i

think it's interesting i think like the the elements of it the the way they both

interact with each other right i i really enjoy their their

relationship um and then also like the absurdity like

the craziness of the anime in general right but yeah i

would give it like so far like with the first episode i'd give it a good like

i'd give it like a eight out of ten oh i would say like eight out of ten

yeah eight out of ten yeah how about you

five five oh okay i think you need to see it more and more right but

after the first episode do you want to see the second episode are you interested

in it after this conversation yeah i think i

need to watch yeah and see what's happened

right right right right i can understand yeah

yeah that's why i like watching anime with you because i think there's

certain things that you catch that i don't like i can read it and i

can like listen to the japanese and i can understand but

there are certain cultural things that i don't get

but i'm pretty sure you do and also that's why you

want to watch japanese anime in japanese yeah yeah exactly

exactly because these are kind of these are things that

i don't think you would get with like an english dub

you wouldn't get it you wouldn't get this level of

understanding yeah but i know that was that was fun that was fun

um i think i will watch and watch yeah let's watch it let's watch the second

episode you know whenever we have a chance you know when we're not busy

netflix yeah netflix uh actually uh if for anybody that's interested this uh

this anime is um the anime is

dandara yeah dandara yes the last they say

i like it i like it yeah yeah exactly and um

yeah you can watch this on netflix disney plus

and i think it's on amazon prime i think it's on all streaming platforms

i believe but i've seen it on amazon prime disney plus and netflix

um we live in japan so the only place that i can watch it in

jap in english is with netflix so if you are living in japan

and you are predominantly like a foreigner

you probably want to watch it in netflix uh but

you know if you're japanese just watch it in disney plus or any other one

um and yeah like uh give it a try it's is 16 plus so i wouldn't recommend

watching it with like young young kids i wouldn't recommend

watching it with somebody who's young um

yeah um but yeah no give it a try and uh yeah uh i can tell you for sure that

the second episode is not like the first episode

but yeah give it give it a chance uh and yeah okay
