It was like a conflict between Dandadan and ex-Japan Yoshiki.
He watched it and he laughed. He thought it was funny.
But at the same time, he tweeted or he went to social media and was like,
I didn't know about this. And then Dandadan was like, we are so sorry.
Really?
Welcome back to 2AM OTTACK! I'm your host Mayu, a born and raised Japanese non-otaku, and...
I'm Cisco, an American otaku.
In this podcast, we share our reviews of anime and manga through our distinct perspectives
with commentary on Japanese culture, history, and the language.
Cisco, I saved those Dandadan episodes so that I could binge watch.
You did?
I did.
Are you sure?
I did.
Okay.
Yeah.
I'll take you at your word.
I just, I've never done it before.
We always like watch little by little.
Sometimes I just forget the episodes.
So like I, we binge watched.
Even it was aired in Japan.
Yeah.
I saw it when it came out as a film with the first three episodes early in the summer.
Right.
And we have an episode about it, which I, I'm going to put in the description.
You can check what Cisco thought about the first three episodes.
We also talked about season one Dandadan.
We explained about like jokes you may miss unless you were in Japan, like 1990s.
So that's an interesting episode.
And we also have episode about Otonoke,
which is the first theme song for Dandadan by Creepy Nuts.
Yep.
So check those episodes out if you're interested in.
So today we are going to talk about Dandadan episode one to eight.
Of season two.
Of season two.
We also want to talk about opening and ending theme songs for season two Dandadan.
Also animation differences from season one and season two and the characters.
Plus today's word of the day.
Before we start, we'd like to hear from you.
Share your thoughts, ideas, questions, or even suggestions that we should talk about.
Send us message to the email in the description,
or you can use Spotify and YouTube comment section as well.
All right.
Let's talk about our take.
I mean, you talked about it already.
So can I say something about it?
Yeah.
Tell us what you thought about it, especially the first three episodes,
but really all first eight episodes.
It was funny.
I watch Dandadan with captions.
With subtitles.
With subtitles in English and sometimes in Japanese.
And all those like, you know, the Kito family's names are really funny to me.
Why?
Because almost all of them, maybe half of them has kanji of curse.
Okay.
For example, like Jugemu, Julia.
Juju means curse.
Yeah.
I don't know how to read.
Maybe Juhiko or Nororiko or something.
Okay.
It's like they called each other's name a little bit, but not a lot.
And then when you hear the words, you don't see the kanji.
Right.
But with captions, you see it.
It was like, wait, each character has names and it's so.
There's always the kanji for curse in everybody's name.
Right.
There's like little details, but like, yeah, when you know, it's like really, really funny.
And so if you're not watching with Japanese subtitles on, you're probably not going to
understand that joke.
Wow.
That's a lot of attention to detail.
Right.
Right.
But I guess, you know, actually, now that I think about it, though, in the manga, they're
probably writing the names in kanji.
Yeah.
So it's a joke that I'm sure existed and was obvious in the manga that became like more
of an Easter egg in the anime because you can't see the name.
Right.
Yeah.
And I can't believe this is like the first time I've thought about something like that.
But that makes a lot of sense, actually.
Yeah.
I mean, if I watch in Japanese, I don't need captions.
Yeah.
But I'm so used to it.
Right.
It helps me understand better.
Well, now that I'm actually thinking about this, I'm realizing that like in a lot of
manga, especially any like shonen battle manga, people call out the names of their attacks.
It's like a meme across like all shonen battle manga.
Right.
And in the manga, inevitably, what the author chooses to name the attack is like written
usually in kanji.
And often it's kind of a joke, like the kanji are read in, you know, with like English or
something.
Right.
But some of the appeal or interest of the name of the attack is how they choose to write
it down.
And when we translate that into anime, it's just completely lost.
That's true.
And so.
So study Japanese.
Yeah.
So for anime creators, think about like when a big attack comes out, having the character
both shouted and have like the words appear on screen to give us the full effect that
was there in the manga or just accept that the media are different and you can't capture
everything.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So I thought that was really funny.
And the volcano and then the fighting scene of the main grandma or mom from Kito family.
She was amazing.
Jennifer Lopez Anaconda.
I had no idea.
Like Jennifer Lopez.
I don't know.
What the heck is that?
It's like a good.
Oh, it's like a movie.
She did.
Yeah.
You know, I didn't remember that JLo was in Anaconda, but I guess I didn't actually ever
see it.
So it's probably from 1997.
Yeah.
Peak time for me to I was 15 when that movie came out.
Like definitely like would have been someone who maybe if we came out in 97, I wasn't old
enough to drive yet.
Otherwise, I might have gone to see it.
I saw a lot of anime.
I saw a lot of anime.
I saw a lot of anime.
I saw a lot of anime.
I saw a lot of anime.
I saw a lot of anime.
I saw a lot of anime.
He's like brief person, I guess.
That was my like thought.
He wears brief all the time.
Was that surprising to you?
Do you expect them to be more of a boxers or at least a boxer brief kind of guy?
I mean, I'm not a dude.
So I don't know which one is better or fashionable or whatever.
You wear it underneath your clothes.
So fashion isn't usually the reason you choose one or the other.
Okay, I don't know.
In my image like young people might wear loose kind.
Well, he's like an athlete though. Maybe I don't know. Still bucks. I mean, yeah, I don't know. Okay. That was my thought. Got it. Yeah. And then the backstory of Jesse was very interesting. Like, you know, it's all spoilers here, but, uh, Jesse was like locked in a room by himself. I don't know if he had a parents or like somebody, like he was locked in and he couldn't play outside. Right. And I'm not sure if it's like, this is just my guess, but he looks like, um,
albino kid was like a white hair was like red eyes. And then maybe that's why he was not allowed to go outside.
Wasn't he chosen to be a human sacrifice? Yeah. But like, uh, we don't know why. Right. Because
he looked different from other kids. Like that's why they picked him. Yeah. Yeah. Maybe it could
be like, it's not explained really well, but I thought maybe that's why. And then like the
Mongolian giant worm, Mongolian death worm, Mongolian death worm. Also like it's warm.
Once they come outside in the sun, they can't survive. Yeah. This was really funny actually,
because I had already seen this episode. And so I knew this and you told it to me,
like as if you were like the smartest person on earth. Momo mentioned like, Oh, like I have to
think, think, think about like, uh, you know, how do I do about worms? Yeah. The worms like,
and then like a water, I was like, I know this, I know this. Why? Yeah. Yeah. And I felt smart.
Yeah. Yeah. Cause I try, I learned of a warm as well. I was trying to do composting
with worms and then, Oh my God, it was a nightmare. Yeah. It was a literal nightmare.
You woke up in the middle of the night. Sure. That the worms had all escaped from the compost
and were like all over our house. I mean, we got worms delivered in a package. 80 worms.
No more than that. I think 200. I don't know. I don't want to even think about it. It was so
many worms. And then like worms on the, you know, kill me in the mail. And it was too excited. I
think that the worms were too excited. So like nighttime, I, even though I put the worms in
the soil, they keep to coming out from the soil because they are, I think, super hyper.
I feel like they don't have like these human emotions. Right. I don't know how to describe
some other, like they were just stressed or something. Yes, exactly. So they came back
and I was like, the solution was keep putting that light over the soil and then they don't come out
because they are scared of sun. Right. But it's kind of a risk to be like,
I'm going to go to sleep now with the worm case. And they came out still. Oh my God,
it was a nightmare. Like I was worried about like, you know, having worm all over the house.
Some got out. And then later, like I learned, like I try to moisturize the soil so that it
composts. It was not right. The thing to do because worms get out again because they think
they might drown in water. Right. Happens in nature too. And when Momo is clicking, I was like,
Oh, I know how solution is. You were very proud of how, but like,
well, I don't know. What was funny for me about this moment was you told it to me as if like,
I had no idea. And I was like, I already saw this episode. I've already heard the
whole explanation. You were like, no, you have no, you don't know. Like they come out
when it gets wet. I was like, yeah, they, nevermind. So anyway, it was very cute.
You didn't know until you saw the episode. Right.
Um, I'll say like, if you had asked me, why do worms come out when it rains? I would have been
like, I'm not. Yeah. Like, I don't know, but I feel like I probably had at some point read or learned
this and then forgot. Yeah. Yeah. But no, I didn't remember. So it was like a sad story of Jesse.
And it was like, of course, they're like jokes in there here and there. Gigi becomes Jesse when
he gets water, cold water. Yeah. Which is just like.
Ranma. That's right.
Yeah. And he was even singing. Yeah, exactly. He sings the Ranma one opening theme song,
which was really fun. That's pretty funny. Yeah. And I got that one.
And I sort of find there was a joke of a Evangelion, which I didn't get.
Yeah. Yeah. Why are they in the LCL? Oh, it's like an explanation, right? Of like,
I filled your lungs with like LCL or something. I didn't understand.
There's like, they like block out one of the letters though. It's but yeah.
What was the context of that? Okay. Whatever. Yeah. There's totally an Evangelion reference
about directly oxygenating. Someone's blood using LCL is like a mechanism,
which is what happens to the pilots in Shinseki Evangelion when they get inside the umbilical.
It has like a special name, but they go inside this pod. And then like, after they go in,
they fill the pod with LCL so that they don't have to like breathe air or something,
whatever. That moment is like a total callback to Evangelion.
That's really funny. Yeah. It was good. And then of course, the name of, uh,
Yeah, that was like a little over the top. I mean, I knew about this because when I was
Googling for first, uh, first season, when we were trying to record about first season of Dandadam,
I was like, okay, like this gotta be like some like side note thing that doesn't really appear
in manga. They like fully just say his whole name. Dandadam is so like, perfect for teenage boys.
To have his name be like dick. Oh my God. This is so funny. Yeah.
Right. A little bit like a romance in there, fighting and the romance and everything. Sci-fi.
Yeah. I guess you're right. Yeah. All this, all sorts of aspects.
Except it's obviously for 40 year olds because all the jokes are from our generation.
That's true. You're the target. That's right. Yeah. Hilarious.
Yeah. Uh, it's so bold. Uh,
Episode of six, there was like music band, which what do you call it?
Complete ripoff of X Japan. And now Yoshiki is suing for something.
I don't know. I, I try to understand it better, but I'm not sure if I understand it.
Right. But like, there's like conflict between Dandadam and the X Japan Yoshiki. He watched it
and he laughed at it. He thought it was funny, but at the same time he tweeted it with like,
he went to social media. I was like, I didn't know about this.
Yeah, dude. They don't have to tell you about like parodies. That's not like a law.
And then Dandadam was like, we are so sorry. Really?
I think. Yeah. Oh my God. A lot of people commented like here and there,
like, this is what happened. And then I don't know what to trust, but yeah, there's like some,
some issue between X Japan and Dandadam. It's like, I thought it was funny.
Yeah. It was a great parody. Yeah. Parody. Yeah. And then I mean,
he thought he was funny, but like people around him or fans didn't take it quite, you know.
They didn't like the parody? Yeah.
It was like an homage. It wasn't even a parody. I mean, it was a parody,
but it wasn't like a mean parody. It was an homage.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's like a hunting. So the song they were singing was like,
kind of sounded like X Japan. I mean, of course they were trying to.
Yeah. That was the goal. It didn't feel like they were like, took too many notes from it.
It didn't sound like a real X Japan song that actually exists. It just sounded like
a song they would write. Right. Yeah.
Right. So there's a something going on right now. Okay.
And then the episode of seven was kind of funny, like taking a break episode
about Momo doing part-time job. Yeah. That was pretty good.
Yeah. That was, that was cute. And the episode of eight is the,
the last one we watched, which was about Gun and Training.
Yeah. It was kind of random,
but I like this anime is random. This anime is very random in general.
But yeah, the thing with him fighting all of the dead composer ghosts was like bizarre,
really strange. And the animation in this episode got weird at some parts.
Yeah. There was not much color. Yeah. But I think season one has the same kind of like,
you know, episode. It's not, it was not training, but the sumo wrestler, there was not much color.
I mean, I liked that aspect of it. I just thought it was weird that like.
Composers. Yeah. I think it's the source material. It's not this anime adaptation of it. It's the
source materials weird. Some of the animation where he's, I think running through the flying
like note bombs that are attacking him. Like the animation got really unconventional, which was
like, okay. And like interesting, but like also sort of strange.
So like you mentioned about animation, but like it's a little bit different. I feel like
from season one to season two. Yeah. Especially to me, like all the main characters look
really good. Like I said, a Kito family and the Manjiro, the, the priest guy.
Right. Kind of reminded me of characters from Golden Kamuy, like a thick, really thick lines.
Yeah. I mean, Manjiro's forehead's not really doing him any favors, is it?
Yeah. But yeah, it's a little bit different than you can tell from the opening too.
Yeah. That's fair. Like I, for me, the overwhelming sense of the animation being
different is probably the closing because the style is so different, but there were moments,
I mean, and this was true to an extent in the first season, there were like moments where they
sort of defied convention and did some sort of unorthodox things with the animation.
I'm thinking of like the moment where in the first season's opening, he goes really,
really fast and all of a sudden like the lines get kind of squiggly. And so that like aspect is still
there in this season, but I feel like they took it like one step further. And again, in the opening,
you can see the moment towards the end where he and Momo reach each other, right? Okano and Momo
like join hands and then he transforms and then he goes really fast. And like, there's no background
and the lines are less clean than they usually are in anime. And like, they're really trying a
different style of animation briefly. One of the vibes that I've gotten from not so much episodes
one through three, but four through eight was that there are more moments in these episodes
where it looks like, I don't use this term lightly, a cartoon than an anime where like,
you can really see the sort of influence of like Western animation on like moments in the show.
And I think it feels like experimental and bold rather than like crappy and low budget. But I
wonder how people are reacting to this sort of like shift in animation style in some of the episodes.
I hope we're sort of like embracing it as a cool new potential thing. Although I don't like
Western animation all that much. So like, I think it's a thing I wouldn't want to see in like all
anime, but it's one that I think is cool in this particular one in like the ways and times in which
they choose to deploy it. Right. Opening theme song is by Aina Jiendo. And the song is called
革命道中. English title is On The Way. That's such a reduction. I mean, like they don't include
the term revolution at all. Like what's up with that? It's so simplified. Yeah, it's like in the
middle of the revolution. That's like really different than just on the way. Like it was just
途中. Yeah, on the way. Sure. Nothing's being specified. Why'd they take the revolution out of
it? The revolution will not be included in the English translation, I guess. Yeah. I really
like this song. Oh, nice. I really like it. What about it is so appealing to you? I think the
rhythm and the lyrics and then how she sound. You like her kind of scratchy voice. It really
matches with the song. And she wrote the song. Oh, that's cool. Yeah. The first time we got to
know her was from Moonrise. That's right. And then she she's an artist. She's not like a pro
voice actor, but she is in it. Yeah, as a voice actor, which was interesting. Yeah, I liked it.
Yeah, she sang the ending theme song, which was like slow, mellow song. Yeah. What, what, what do
you pray for? What do you pray for? So like, I have that image of her like, I didn't know any of other
her songs. But 革命途中 sounds totally different. And like, it really matches to
like theme and like vibe and have voice and everything. I think it is a really good done
to done theme song, actually, especially given like, the immense pressure to like live up to
Otonoke. I think this one did like a good job. Like, yeah, she definitely got it. Otonoke was
great. And then this one is great, too. Cool. Yeah. And the ending theme song is calledどうかしてる
by I think it's words. I will. I'm just never gonna get used to that name. w u r t s. We talked
about s or z s. capital S. Yeah, we explained this like when he was trying to name himself artist name
he he was too embarrassed to make up one so he randomly typed. It's like the most Gen Z
like story I ever heard. A little bit unfortunate, but works. I guess it's very,
you never forget. Yeah. Okay, so like, you can tell that I'm like, not thrilled about this
artist's name. But I gotta say, the song's like a total earworm. And I got like, kind of into it.
It's short. It's so short. It's like two and a half minutes. Yeah, that's like a 1960s hit,
like a radio jam and a coconut or two. It's like a three minutes in the middle. Yeah, they're both
pretty short songs. And the chorus heavy chorus, like repeated chorus in for both of them. Yeah,
yeah. And more for Docuster. Right? Well, a couple minutes. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. You were
saying earlier that you think this maybe is like the influence of like TikTok or social media,
like short, essentially. Yeah, that it's like shortening what we expect from songs to to like
be more social media. That's what I thought. Related. Yeah, I mean, it doesn't have to be
long. If it had been an ex Japan parody would have been seven and a half minutes, right? Oh,
my God. Well, yeah, growing up in Japan, when I was into music was like elementary school,
middle school. Oh, those songs were so long, those long intro, first of all, and the long song.
Yeah, I guess maybe the next season they'll have like meatloaf, right? Like, I guess meatloaf,
Jim Steinman died, who's the guy who wrote a lot of meatloaf's music. If you had left it to him,
he also would have produced like a seven or eight minute long song. Anyway,
Tokashiro sounds good. Yeah, it's very, very catchy. Not only does it get stuck in your head,
but it's like, it's fun. It's like a fun song. Yeah, it's a great ending theme song.
So question is, what did you think about the animation, though? Are we talking about the
opening of the closing here? Closing? Yeah. So again, I think like they're experimenting with
like a new direction in the closing animation style. It feels almost like paper cutouts,
right? It looks like, yeah. Like the animation, like at first it's like a doing like a 360 degree
pan, right? It goes all the way around the classroom or whatever. And it's static. There's
no animation at all. It's just a pan shot. And it looks like, yeah, paper cutouts. Like the
background is really interesting. And the things in the foreground look like they're stickers or
something. Very 2D. Yeah. And then there's some brief animation of the main characters dancing,
doing what really looks like a TikTok dance, right? Like something designed to be copied.
Right, like a witch watch does the same thing. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Just like the new witch watch
opening. And because it's done with these like paper cutout type things, it's not very fluid,
right? It's like really kind of jerky. And the like visual style of the characters is like
borderline, like super deformed, right? Like they're not, they don't look quote unquote good.
They look kind of like, yeah, sharp. Yeah, they look very fuzzy and soft and kind of silly. And
I don't think I hate it, actually. Like I think it's sort of interesting and neat, but it is a
real departure from like a traditional closing. And I think the catchiness of the music is like
pairs well with the sort of child likeness of the animation. And I dig it. But I hope it's only like
a one core thing. I don't want them to like keep doing it like this. It was like a cool idea and
you did it. And like now, please don't do that again. So I feel it was interesting. It was
interesting. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. I guess if the opening is supposed to be more of like the
supernatural or like horror ish, or at least action-y side of Dun Dun Dun, the closing is
like the silly, goofy, like funny joke side. And so I, you know what, I respect it that way. I
think it's fine. Yeah. I think a season one opening ending were really, really cool. Yeah. Yeah.
Animation were cool, too. Like, you know, Tabo Bobo was funny. And yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. The
ending. Yeah. The season one ending was like really. Yeah, it was really entertaining. Right.
And like very silly. Yeah. And had a great song. And the opening was like peerless. So this was
yeah, this like it lived up to it. But I think of the four, this closing animation is the weakest.
And but the song is pretty solid. And it's definitely more singable for me than, you know,
so I like that. It's really hard to sing the song. All right. Let's do today's word of the day.
Okay. Today's word of the day is Hayashi or Ohayashi. So Ohayashi was in the episode of
X-Japan, like a mocking band. They're not mocking. No, they're not mocking. Homage. Homage
band. They kept calling Ohayashi, Ohayashi. If you speak Japanese and then you can kind
of feel it. Okay. Ohayashi is not forest. We have a word Hayashi. Hayashi means forest.
But if you say Ohayashi, that doesn't mean forest. Got you. From Wikipedia. Hayashi
is a group of performers who provide musical accompaniment for Japanese Noh or Kabuki theater.
You'll say performance of Rakugo or festival. Okay. So the people in the background playing
the drums and like weird, you know, like a flute, traditional stuff. Okay. So those are like,
um, very common in the Japanese festivals. Sure. Taiko thing and then stuff. So I thought it was
funny because they didn't look like traditional Hayashi. They didn't look like traditional
Hayashi, but they did kind of look like Noh actors. The face and the makeup. More like Kabuki
actors. But they also looked like an 80s, like glam rock band. So image rock. Right. Right. They
were helping with an exorcism of evil eye. Yeah. Which was like a fun, interesting idea. Yeah. Yeah.
Do you have any questions? Well, do you actually hire Ohayashi to do exorcisms? Or that's not a
thing they do? I don't know. Exorcism is a thing for shrine. Do you think some of the joke about
X-Japan is that it's an X-orcism? Oh, maybe. Didn't think about it. Sorry. That was,
that was bad even by my standards. Could be. Yeah. And do they, do the performers in the Ohayashi
that appears in the show actually look like the members of X-Japan? Like, is it a one-to-one?
I thought Yoshiki looked really similar because of the drama, because of his, um, you know,
neck supporter thing. Does Yoshiki wear that? Yeah. When he used to play the drums, like he
often did a lot of headbanging. Yeah. And then he hurt, I think. And he hurt his neck,
so then he had to wear a neck brace. Yeah. That's my image. Like his image of like playing the
drum is that. It's like neck brace. So he's like, um, half naked, top naked. Got it. Yeah. Wow.
I didn't know that about him. You head banged so hard that you had to wear a neck brace.
It's like pretty like, wow, you must've gone like really hard by the way. He's a great pianist. Oh,
yeah. He's like super talented and like so awesome. And he's like a super gourmet, right?
He like, you could like get, you could pour him a wine and be like, I'm not showing you the label.
Like what wine is this? And he'd be like, I know exactly what this is. Maybe Yoshiki too. Yeah.
Yoshiki is also like, like that good. He's like a practically a sommelier. Yeah. Yeah. All right.
So before we end, do you want to add anything else? Dundun still awesome. I like it. I kept
expecting for like the new character to be introduced by now. And he's like not in it yet.
And again, like bear in mind, I only started reading the manga from like chapter like 240 or
something. I actually don't even know what chapter they're on and how, when I started reading, but I
started reading from like very, very late, like not that long ago. I am excited to see the anime
catch up to where the manga is. And then I'll know the whole story. There'll be a new character
on the season. It really seems like, it seems like the guy with the glasses is going to show
up. I mean, maybe he'll only show up in like the next season or something, but he is definitely
a character who exists in the manga. And so I know they got, they got Adam sooner or later. So
I'm looking forward to seeing what he's like and where he comes from and his powers and everything
else. Yeah. And who's his voice. I feel like it's going to be Daru. Daru is already taken. Oh,
damn. Yeah. He's like a Shako Seijin. What? Yeah. The same person. Which one's the Shako Seijin?
Shako Seijin, Penis Chinkosu. That guy is Daru? Yes. Sekitomokazu. Sekitomokazu was Daru?
He was in Evangelion. But he was in everything. But like, wow. Okay. All right. He's amazing.
Yeah. That guy's, he can do anything. Right. Exactly. Okay. Well then I, now I don't know
