Cisco, we recently watched Chainsaw Man Recap, which is divided into two parts.
Right. It's like three and a half hours long altogether, which makes it less of a recap
than like all the parts of the original Chainsaw Man without like, you know,
all stitched together into just two movies.
But there's some editing and some like line changes.
Are we going to go over those? Do we know what they are?
No, I don't.
Oh, me neither.
I just want to talk about Chainsaw Man because like we've never done it before.
Got it. Okay. So it's not exactly the same as the original series, but as someone who
watched the original series, I could not tell you what was different because it's been a while.
It's been a while. I mean, big difference is there's no endings for each episode.
Right.
There are 12 episodes on anime.
Okay.
And there were two endings for this.
That's true. Well, I guess if you figure that like a 12 episode anime is about,
let's see, like 25 minutes times 12. Normally you would think it was six hours and then it's
like a little bit less than six hours. And this thing's only like three and a half.
So they definitely edited some stuff out and took it down, but there is no opening.
There's no ending. Like maybe it's, you know, I don't think they, oh,
I guess at the very, very end, but there's no animation for it. Right.
And the opening too. Yeah.
There are opening animations for both of them, but there's no ending animation for either one.
It's just like a credit roll. There are songs though, but well, whatever. My point is more
that like, if you took out all of the openings and endings from the original show, and then
you also took out all of those seconds of like recap from the previous episodes, you might be
left with something that's only like four to four and a half hours long or something. And then this
is only three and a half hours. So it doesn't feel like they cut any of the really important stuff.
Although I will say, because it happens, it goes by so quickly. It didn't feel like it had the
emotional impact of some of the moments in the, in the original anime, the original anime felt,
especially like the thing with, um, it's a girl with one eyes name.

Himeno. Are we spoiling things?
About Chainsaw Man, original Chainsaw Man, I guess. Yeah.
Yeah. Okay. Her death in the anime hit harder than her death in this recap arc. And I think it's
because you had to spend more episodes getting to know her and sort of like seeing things unfold.
And then watching her die was like a real surprise. And then this time it's like,
it goes by so quick that you're kind of like, Oh, I guess that's sad, but it's like, not as
emotionally powerful in the recap. Okay. That was my feeling.
We're doing this because there will be Chainsaw Man. The movie Resurrect is coming out October

About the recap.
About Chainsaw Man and about the recap version.
Both. Okay. So I think I'll start with talking about the recap version specifically. So if
you've watched the original and you watch the recap, I think for most people, you're going
to be like, yes, this is more or less exactly what I remember about the plot. The, there are
probably some changes and like, I don't know what they were, but it doesn't feel really different
except in the, Oh man, this is all going by so fast kind of a way. But I think the actual events
that happen are more or less the same. So that part of it is like, it's pretty nice. It does,
it feels, it feels a little rushed. And that was, I think the point, right. Was to like,
condense it and make it like, okay, so you can be caught up. So I think plot wise,
it will catch you up on all the plot. But I think if I had to recommend it to somebody to
watch Chainsaw Man, I would be like, if you have the time, watch the original, not the recap.
If you watched the original like two, three years ago, and you're not sure you remember exactly what
happened or who the characters are or whatever, the recap arc is perfect. Cause you'll be like,
Oh yeah, the whole way through. And it's a good show. The animation quality is high. The twist
in terms of the story or sort of unpredictable. Like the recap arc does all of the recap stuff
very effectively. But I feel like watching the original, like the story was more,
a little bit more compelling because it, you know, it had a better rhythm to it.
There's like a other benefit of watching original, which is like, you can get to watch
ending credit ending. Oh yeah. And each one's different, right? One is different.
That was one of the most surprising things about Chainsaw Man. The original series is
typical anime they invest in, you know, at, at most one ending per core, this one,
every ending animation song is different and every ending animation is different. And so not all of
them are equal. In my opinion, Ano-chan song, I think it's called Chutase. That one is the best.
It might be the best anime closing of all time, but you have to, you have to like be able to speak
Japanese in order to fully appreciate the joke that's being made there. Because this is the

episode where Denji gets his first kiss. Himeno-senpai kisses him while she's drunk and
throws up in his mouth during the kiss. And he's so grossed out that he then like starts vomiting
a lot. And the ending theme song contains the lyrics, get on to get on, get on, get on, get on,
get on to, but like the way that she's pronouncing it, she's saying, at least in the, in the lyrics,
it says she's saying get on, but it really sounds like she's saying, which means vomit in Japanese.
And so if you're just listening to it and not reading the lyrics, it sounds like she's saying
like throw up, throw up, throw up, throw up, throw up, kiss like that, which is hilarious.
And it's kind of made even funnier by the fact that she is allegedly saying something else,
but like the lyrics match the episode just like super perfectly. And it's so funny.
But there's another lyrics.
Bet on two, right? Which is like, I think it's supposed to be bet on you or something.
Bet on two. Yeah, I think so.
Something like that. Right. But like, and so that's what bet on you, but
beto two means tongue kiss in Japanese. And so there's like a pun there. Also,
like, the whole song is just great. Like, I think I like on Oh, anyway, but like,
this song is just like, it's so so perfect.
It was on the episode of seven. It's like, one of the most memorable.
Yes, it's an incredibly memorable episode. And then like,

the ending theme song just like really sent it home. So it was a was great.
So there are lots of artists who sound endings theme songs, like Vandy, Zutomayo,
who's on the channel, Eme, Queen Bee.
Damn, like, there are a lot more.
So like, I think it was awesome that I like they clearly had a huge budget for this. And
they really spent it in some like, very cool ways. So yeah, I really like this aspect of it. It's
also a show that doesn't have any sakuga hokai at any point.
Not yet. Yeah.
Not yet. They're not gonna do it in the movie.
But yeah, I mean, I think like, the animation is very clean, like it's action packed,
really interesting. The opening and ending are both killer. Kenji Yonezu is the guy who did the
opening and the opening song is great and like really iconic and like matches the energy of this
particular story really well. The ending theme songs are like all over the place. But like,
you know, all by famous people like it's just it's great. It's really good.
I watched the original animation a couple years ago, right? And I was not sure if I
remember them correctly. I think after watching the recap, I kind of remember like 75%.
Yeah, pretty good.
But there are like a couple of stuff like I noticed this time. And then one of them is

how power speaks is very unique. It's not a standard Japanese nor it's not it's dialect or
right. Like, she sounds like a person from all day in Japan, all times in Japan.
Yeah. So I in the I feel like the subtitles do an okay job of capturing this, but I'm not really
able to tell anymore, because I know too much Japanese to be able to, like, have to rely on
the subtitles in the same way I used to. But I do remember her speaking like sort of like
a Shakespearean character in English, which I think actually kind of nails it in terms of how
she's speaking in Japanese. Like, she sounds like she's from like the medieval times, essentially,
right, in terms of her word choice and her grammatical structures and stuff. And we did
listen to like, I don't know, one line of dialogue from the dub. And I already was like, absolutely
not. That's not because like, there's anything particularly wrong. I mean, the one I just can't
stand dubs period, like nothing about individuals involved in the dub or anything. But like,
I feel like she needed to have like a British accent, because the words she's using sound like
what we expect people to have, like an old timey accent to go with. And it's true that in Japanese,
she doesn't exist. I mean, like, I don't even know what an old timey accent sounds like in
Japanese. Do people in the Edo period speak in a like with a different sounding tone than people
in the modern day Japan? I don't know either. But like the end of the word sentence, she's like
blah, blah, which makes her sound like an old person, old person, but like,
I didn't know, right means like, basically you, but like you're looking down.
Right, right, right. So she's speaking like, like a queen?
No, but not she's not polite or respectful way.
Oh, I see. Yeah. Okay. But does she say there's like a specific term for myself when you're the
king? I forgot what it is. Well, she just uses very old language all over the place,
but like not, not particularly respectful language. So it's a really weird combination.
Anyway, I don't know that there's going to be a good way to translate how power is speaking,
like period. But I did feel like a rude sounding Shakespearean person might kind of capture what
they were going for. And I remember that being more or less her tone in the subtitles and in
the manga in English. Yeah, I think it's very hard to capture the way that she's speaking.
Yeah, I think they what makes me think they did a good job in the translation
is I think I read the manga of chainsaw man before I watched any of the anime. And when
power spoke in Japanese, she was exactly what I expected her to be from having read
the English manga version. In that sense, the translators really got it right in the dub. It

wasn't what I expected her to sound like. But that's off. That's true for me with like a lot
of dubbed characters in general. Like, I feel like my interpretation of how they would sound in
English is very different from the direction that actual English dubs go. It's one of the
reasons I don't really watch them. I remember the first time I saw the first episode of chainsaw man,
I was in shock. So violent, so violent. And it's not what you expect. And especially when we start
watching you didn't. I think you told me that I'd let people see it. Oh, but I didn't really
picture it in my head. Got it. And it was so much more than I expected. Yeah. And I remember after
watching the first episode, I was like, what kind of person create this kind of story? Who does
this? Turns out it's someone from basically your hometown, right? Much later, I found about that,
like, Oh my god, I like he, he's from like, one hour drive away from my hometown.
Basically, like, I can't prefecture can't believe it. Like, what was like, he's like life culture.
And then like, I just like, I feel like the blowing to me, like, this is definitely somebody
who grew up like, with all sorts of like frustrated dreams, essentially, right. And like, wanting to
be like, kind of a rebel, right. And then like, it's hard to be a rebel in Japan, there's not a
lot of things to like, rebel against. But you can really use your imagination to like, let it go.
And I think that's for sure happening here. Tatsuki Fujimoto sounds like a little bit,
how can I say, very unique person totally after reading his manga, which has one shots. Yeah.
Short stories. Yeah. Yeah. Like it was surprising. We've talked about Tatsuki Fujimoto's
look back before when we went to see in the movie theater. I think we made it in English,
too. Right? Yeah. Oh, yeah. I think we did. I say a lot of thing about like, my hometown,
his hometown, too. Right. And then like, it made me cry in the theater. And after we got out of
the theater even more. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's true. I do hope that if this guy becomes sufficiently
famous, they make like a, like a Tatsuki Fujimoto, like land or at least like some kind of attraction
in his hometown. Cause like, I would really go to that. Maybe they wish I'm sure Nikaho city wishes
that. Yeah, no doubt. Cause they already made look back map. Oh, cool. That you can have it.
I think you can get it like a city office and that you can visit those like, uh, like,
how did we not do this this past stationary store or like convenience store, the rice field,
which seems like anywhere in my home, like it doesn't have to be any specific rice field.
Yeah. There's a map and then you can visit all those places. We're definitely doing that next
year. Okay. All right. We passed this year. I think I was going to say, well, I can't believe
we didn't, we didn't do it this year. I know. How did we forget about it? Okay. Anyway. So yeah,
that, that reminding reminded me of that, you know, like watching Chainsaw Man again from the

beginning. So I'm like, Oh, this is how exactly I felt like a second time too. Got it. Yeah. Uh,
so let's talk about the movie Chainsaw Man, the movie Red's arc. Yeah. Right. One thing,
I don't actually know if this is true because my memory is like definitely not this good, but
the one moment in the recap arc where I was like, this feels like maybe this was different from the
show is at the very end, when they go into the building that has like the, you know, whatever
the snake user and the samurai sword guy in it in the basement, there are a bunch of like
Majin fighting the zombies. And I think they gave more cuts. They might've like done a couple of
extra cuts of those fights happening in the recap arc, because many of those Majin or devils are
really important in the Dese arc. And so I think they wanted to like introduce them at more length
like the angel guy, and especially the shark dude, and maybe even the violent, the, yeah,
the Boryoku, the violence guy. Like, I'm pretty sure all of those people play roles in the Dese
arc story. And so they might've given those characters just a little bit more, like maybe
like one, one or two shots more each to kind of develop who they are. I could be wrong about that
though. The shark guy was in the recap too, but he didn't really talk much, right? Yeah. He doesn't
do a lot. He's just in that scene where they're fighting the zombies, but he's like a, I mean,
look, this is based on my memory of reading the manga like years ago, but I remember him being a
fairly important character in the next part of the story. And so I think they wanted to like
introduce that character more fully the angels also in it. I don't remember how much the violence
guys in it, but the shark and the angel are definitely like, they're in the previews for the
next, for the movie. And so like, I think they, they get bigger roles. Guess who's doing the
shark guy's voice. Someone we already know. Who is it? Yes. You can guess easily. Oh, I really can.
Really? No. Natsuki Hanae. Oh, that's awesome. Oh, I'm excited. Okay. Yay. Tanjiro. If Tanjiro became
an Oni. Yay. Yeah. So I'm sure you can tell from the like, uh, casting of this, I don't know,
shark guy, but shark guy must be important. Yeah. Right. Exactly. Yeah. The opening theme song is
by Kenji Yonezu. Yeah. Yeah. Again. And it's called Iris Out and the ending theme song is by
Kenji Yonezu again, but sung by Hikaru Utada. Okay. Yeah. Sounds interesting. Sounds interesting.
Yeah. It's called Jane Doe. Jane Doe. Okay. Interesting. What does it mean? Jane Doe is a
term you use when you're trying to use an example of a person, but you don't want to use a real name

in English specifically for a woman. So, uh, it it's especially used in court documents.
When someone is involved in a court case and you're trying to give them anonymity and you're
trying to not say what their real name was. You say Jane Doe instead. It's like John Smith,
which is the same thing for dudes. I mean, like, I think it's actually John Doe in court records
and stuff. And I don't know why Doe, but like, that's the, that's the universally agreed upon
anonymity name. Interesting. Didn't know that. Like if they find a dead body and they don't know
who it belongs to, but it's a woman's, there'll be like an unidentified Jane Doe was found in like,
whatever, whatever. And if it's a minor, sometimes they'll use, I guess, maybe not if it's a minor,
but they'll also use it to like disguise identities by using that term instead.
Right. Let's do today's word of the day. All right.
What's today's word of the day? Should we talk about like the difference between Akuma,
Majin? So Akuma just means devil and it's written with just one character, right? Oh no, Akuma,
evil. And then Ma means demon, demon, evil demon, evil demon means devil. Yeah. Okay,
fine. And then Majin is the same Ma, which means devil, devil, but, or demon rather,
and it's also Oni, right? Can you read that same character that way or no? No,
just kidding. It just means like demon. And then next to person. So demon person is a Majin,
right? Whereas Akuma is a, is a devil. And then the use of devil hunter is it just in English
to describe someone who hunts devils. Sometimes to me, it's confusing. Like, because they,
in the show, they trying to distinguish those words. And then I know that the meanings are
different than sometimes, but I like a, who's Majin, who's Majin, who's like Akuma.
Yeah. Well, it seems like the Majin aren't necessarily trying to kill humans. Like some
of them are right. Like the guy with the Kuwagata in the beginning who they kill,
it's like the first mission they go, the Denji goes on and kills him with an ax. Cause he doesn't
want to like ruin the Erohon, like the, the dirty magazines. That guy appears to be a Majin who
doesn't like humans. Power seems to be a Majin also, right? Not an, a full on Akuma. I'm unclear
how power became a Majin instead of an Akuma, a devil. Whereas like the devils that they contract
with, like the Fox devil and the future devil and the snake devil, et cetera, et cetera. Like
the ones where they can like summon them. Those seem to be actual devils that are like very
superhuman and do not necessarily have humanoid forms. Like the future devil kind of, kind of
looks like a person, but like not really. Um, and like the ghost devil has like a face, but like
he's obviously like a devil. It doesn't look sort of human. Whereas power who's a Majin has like a
human appearance. And like, there's this question about like, what's Denji, is Denji a Majin?
Because he has like the heart of a devil, but a human body or something else. Right.
And that's sort of unclear. To me, he is Majin because he used to be a human.
He looks human still, but a devil's heart. But I think I also sort of remember reading,
and maybe I'm like wrong about this too, but there's like the Majin always have horns that
like give them away. And that's why like power has horns and the Kuwagata guy has the face.
Maybe I'm wrong about that, but like, yeah, I don't know. So like Denji's kind of, his status
is a little unclear, but there's those other guys who can also like regenerate in different ways,
like the samurai sword guy. So yeah, it's, it seems complicated, but is that a good word for
the day? Majin? I think so. So it's not something you would use in normal Japanese though, right?
チェンソーマンの魅力
It's like a made up word for this anime. No, I think you hear it on anime, other anime too,
I think. Okay. Yeah. Now I don't think the Ma in Majin is the same as Ma in Mahou,
right? They're different. It's the Akuma no Ma or are they all the same? I think it's the same.
Okay. So it also implies magic. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Cause uh, like Mahou's guy would
be like a wizard, right? More a magic user. And so it's got that same sort of like magic thing.
Yeah. All right. That's all. All right. Anything else you'd like to add before we end?
Chainsaw Man rocks. You should see the show and the movie, but it's really violent.
Are we going to see it? I mean, you don't have to come if you don't want to, just like you did
with Demon's Lair, but I did eventually. Yeah. Do you want to see it in 4DX?
