Welcome to Kevin's English Room Podcast.
Hello.
Hello.
So, do you have anything?
Good? You're good?
Yeah.
Yeah, okay. I have something I want to talk about.
Oh, I mean, okay, yeah, yeah.
So, when you're drinking with your friends,
Okay.
how do you end it?
How do you end it?
I've had this question for a long time, actually.
You're drinking with, let's say, 4 or 5 of yourfriends.
Okay.
You know how there's that moment where everyonehas talked what they want to talk about,
and then that moment of silence that everybodyhas,
and then somebody talks, and then comes another 20minutes,
and then comes the silence again,
and then somebody talks, and then comes another 30minutes,
and then silence again, and then finally somebody's like,
じゃあ、行きますか。
You know that moment?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I know that.
So, I'm very weird in a way that when I'm asked oflike,
Hey, how much time is the best time for you withyour friends?
An hour, two hours?
Like, what's the best, optimal, most satisfyingamount of nomikai time?
Okay, okay.
40 minutes for me.
40 minutes, okay.
I'm very weird, I know, no one says 40 minutes,and that's weird.
No.
But for me, 40 minutes is the best.
Okay.
Like, I want to go home after 40 minutes.
Yeah, okay, okay.
And so, I know that I'm weird like this, so like,I've always had questions,
but like, is everybody waiting for somebody tosay,
じゃあ、行きますか。
in that moment?
Because if they are, I mean, I'll say it, butlike, I'm scared of like,
like, if I go too early, like, I'm already...
I myself, inside secretly, I'm already in,
Okay, I want to go home now after 40 minutes,
so like, but I don't want to, because if I showthat to people who,
to people who don't know me a lot,
they'll think that I don't want to be there withthem.
I love them.
Okay, okay, yeah.
I love them.
That doesn't, it doesn't change.
Like, no matter how much I love them, it's still40 minutes.
40 minutes is the best time.
So like, so like, I don't want to, I don't want torisk it.
Like, when that first silence comes in,
like, I'm like, well, I can say,じゃあ、行きますか。
But like, like, what is, are people not ready yet?
What do you think?
Yeah, well, I thought you're the type of guy saysit first.
Yeah, so whenever I say it,
that's like the fifth time that has happened.
Somebody's gotta say it, like that.
Oh, I see, I see.
03:02
True.
But are people waiting for anything?
Yeah, sometimes I guess.
Okay.
That's true.
I guess like 40 minutes is shorter than theaverage.
So you will be very uncomfortable after 40minutes, right?
Yeah, not like, I'm not like super uncomfortable,I'm okay.
Okay, yeah.
If I were to say what's the best time, I wouldjust say 40 minutes.
I don't mind being with people for two hours.
Like, I can, I can handle it.
But like, my question is like,
that moment, that first moment when everybodytalked what they want
and that silence comes in.
That, can I go in and be like,
じゃあ行きますか?
Or is that too early?
That's 飲み会, right?
With five, six people.
Whenever I do 飲み会, there's no alcohol.
So I don't know what you're saying by saying it's飲み会 and asking it's 飲み会,
but like, yeah, five or six, nighttime.
Nighttime, you eat things at the restaurant.
Yeah, at the restaurant to like catch up withfriends, you know, that kind of thing.
Okay, yeah.
Yeah, I think if you say like, at the first blank,
too early?
can be, can be like too early.
I see, I see.
Yeah.
I see.
So you're talking about like, everybody finishedeating.
Yeah.
And then like, now it's like chatting time, right?
Somebody's drinking.
Yeah.
And then you have a silence.
Maybe one hour already.
It has already been one hour.
One hour.
So this is my opinion though.
If it's like the restaurant, like, not like a 居酒屋,or like a bar things.
It's like relatively like a restaurant place.
So give me like a specific place, for example,like...
Umm...
Umm...
なんだろうな...
Like, let's say whatever the Italian, which isn'tthat cheap.
For example, like an Italian inside a...
Italian inside like Tokyo Station where they haveoffice buildings on the top floor.
And then the first three is like...
Okay, okay.
Consumer, like, you know, you have games.
Yes, yes.
And you have universal shit fucking whatever shop.
Yeah.
And then you have like a bread shop and then anItalian restaurant.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Okay, good, good.
Yeah.
Where they have actual 釜 for the pizzas.
06:01
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Okay, okay.
They have some wine.
Some wine that showcased wine.
Right, right, right.
Okay, okay.
I see, I see what you're doing.
You may have like a view from the window, maybe.
Of Tokyo, maybe.
Yes, yes, maybe.
Sure, sure, sure.
But not too fancy, right?
Not that fancy.
You can go like this.
You can go like this.
Yeah, like a pizza is maybe like 1500 yen, 1600yen.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah, those places.
Yeah, and then your ultimate 会計 is gonna be like...
一人...
一人 like 6000, maybe.
Yeah, 6000.
Yes, yes, exactly.
Okay.
Exactly.
One hour, everybody finish eating.
Okay.
And then silence.
Okay.
And you said it.
Okay.
It's not that bad.
I see.
It's still, I guess, relatively early to call it.
Okay.
But because it's for eating,
for the dinner, right?
Yeah.
It's like if you finish eating at the dinnerplace,
so my image is like you can end the dinner partyat 1 hour and 10 minutes.
Okay.
And then you finish it.
And then because we all finish eating,
it's natural to finish the party.
Oh, okay, okay.
I see what you're trying to do here.
So...
Yeah.
The main objective of that place is to eat.
So when you're done that primary objective,
then you're basically free to go.
Yes, yes, yes.
That's like reasonable in one way.
I see.
In one way, yeah.
We all know it's a...
We don't care about eating, basically.
We're just here to talk things.
But still, this is the dinner place and dinnermeeting.
So if you finish eating,
then you wrap it up and just go to that.
To me, though, go to the next place for chatting, though.
Okay.
If you wrap it up in 1 hour and a few minutes,
I'm still hungry for the chatting, I guess.
Oh, okay.
But it's reasonable, I think.
Oh, okay.
It's not that strange.
Like, I don't think you're like,
Oh, I see. Okay.
Cold, hot, like that.
What would be a better...
The second time would be better, do you think?
So I don't know how many times,
but 1 hour and a half minutes, 1 hour and 30minutes.
After 1 hour and 30 minutes,
I think you're good to go.
Any moment is great.
Yeah, I think so.
All right. Okay.
1 hour and 30 minutes is like one decent...
Got it. Got it.
You know?
Oh, okay.
09:00
Will that change if that was like a Taisho izakaya, you're saying?
Not that much.
Okay.
Not that much, but Taisho izakaya is more like
more into like conversation places.
Yeah.
So it's more difficult to...
To what?
End up...
There's no like measurement.
Like, if everybody finish eating,
then you can leave the restaurant.
But like, izakaya is like,
always like somebody have like something...
Like a little bit of drink left.
There's no moment like we kind of finished, youknow?
It's like...
Sure.
But like, what about like, you know, after 1 hourand a half?
Yeah.
I think that's very similar.
You can...
I think 1 hour and a half is like one package.
Okay.
Yeah.
And then you can leave.
Yeah.
You can leave, yes, if you want to.
I'm not saying I hate that.
Yeah.
You can...
Yeah.
You're not going to cause any...
Right, right, right.
Yes.
And then, if you want to...
If you want to continue talking,
then go to the next one, next place.
The second one, third one.
All right.
That's how it made.
Okay.
I see.
So you...
Yeah.
Oh, all right.
1 hour and a half.
1 hour and a half.
Got it.
I'll keep it shut.
1 hour and a half.
Then I'll say it.
All right.
Yeah.
Oh, what about saying like,
ちょっと今日用事あって1時間で出るわ。
And then...
Well, I don't want to do that
because that's not honest.
Oh, okay, okay.
I don't want to lie to them.
Okay.
See, this whole mentality started
because I questioned myself.
Are they all waiting for somebody to say it?
Oh.
Then if they are, then I'll say it.
I see.
Yeah.
I think it goes like very long,
over 2 hours, 2 hours and a half,
and there's not many interesting topics.
Then people will start waiting for somebody maybe.
All right.
2 and a half hours?
No, no, just after 2 and a half hours.
Yeah.
All right.
I see.
Yeah.
So you're saying, even if it's...
Let's say you hit that 1 and a half hour mark, right?
And then there comes that silence.
Yeah.
So your point of view is that
they're not actually waiting for anybody to say.
It's just a flow of conversation
that happened to combine the silence.
That's it.
Yeah.
Not that anybody's waiting for somebody to say it.
Yeah.
But what do you mean silence?
You're talking about like how...
12:03
Yeah, sure.
For example, like...
You know, like,
I know, I know.
I know, I know.
I know, I know.
I know.
What is he doing?
That silence, you know?
That length?
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
I think that's just within the flow.
Just a coincidence of...
Yeah, I think so.
OK.
All right.
Yeah.
All right.
So if you say...
If you start ending the meeting...
That moment?
That moment, I guess like,
Oh, he...
Oh, he's in a hurry.
Yeah.
I feel like he wants to end this.
Oh, OK, OK.
Kind of.
OK, OK.
That I don't want happening.
OK, OK, I see.
Yeah.
I see.
I think so.
I see.
Thank you.
But there's no measurement in me
that like first silence or like second silence.
Yeah, I don't think anybody does.
I don't think anybody joins a Nomikai measuringthat, right?
Well, it's just, you know,
like, if you collect all the data,
what do you think would be like the general, youknow?
Yeah, I see.
Right.
Yeah, just...
Do you want me...
For example, let's say we're five.
OK.
Me and you included, we're five, six, whatever.
40 minutes passed from the starting time.
OK.
Do you want me to like start ending the party?
Let me answer that on the next episode.
It's getting a little bit long.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
All right.
Thanks for seeing us.
Thank you.
Bye-bye.
