京都の年末年始の混雑状況
Welcome to Kevin's English Room Podcast. Hello guys. So, I'm going to Kyoto tomorrow.
Oh, tomorrow? Yeah, over the 年末年始. Oh, yeah. You spend the whole 年末年始? Yeah, I'm gonna spend the whole 年末年始 there.
I've never been outside of home on 年末年始 before, so it's a new challenge. Nice.
And I'm also kind of worried about what's gonna be there, because 年末年始 is so different from the usual 営業時間。 Oh, yeah, true.
So, you've experienced 年末年始 in Kyoto? Yes, but I basically went back to my house, my parents' home.
So, you don't know how busy it was. Yeah. You don't know what the 営業, like how 不便 or...
Yes, yes. At least 年末年始 and 年末年始 wasn't in Kyoto, I think. I see. Yeah. Okay, I see.
I mean, have you ever heard anything about it? You know, a lot of people or not a lot of people.
I thought it was like, either way, you know, completely empty or completely packed. Yeah.
But I'm assuming completely packed on the 元旦, right? Because people go there to 八末礼, and Kyoto's must be...
Right, right. They have like very famous temples and shrines in Kyoto. So, yeah, I think there were many people to 八末礼.
But I guess if you avoid the shrines... Yeah, I don't think that crowded. Like the city, you know.
I don't think that... Am I just too naive? Yeah. What about like foreigners, like foreign tourists?
They don't care about 年末年始 that much? Oh, they do, they do. But, you know, right now,
the Chinese are not coming as much. Oh, I see. You hear the news about that, you know,
that China's like, don't go to Japan, and they're like, and the Kyoto hotel prices are going down,
and not a lot of foreigners right now. Oh, good. So I guess it's kind of like a chance for me to go.
Right. So, two months ago, I did a live concert at Kyoto, and there were no Japanese,
but like foreign people, only foreign tourists were in the city, and very crowded. Yeah.
I was like, wow, it's a different country. This is not the Kyoto that I know. Yeah, yeah.
So, if that continues, it will be crowded. Yeah, okay. Yeah, but I'm not sure it's like
very, very crowded, or just usual crowded. It's just a New Year's Day. Yeah, right, right. I really
don't know what to expect. Yeah. So, yeah, I just, I'm just gonna have a very low expectation.
You should. I'm just gonna be happy to be in Kyoto. Yeah. Just don't expect to like,
go to any famous places, because that might take forever. Right, right, right. So, yeah. Yeah.
So, you remember, I, thank you for telling me, sharing the location of the restaurant that you,
oh, yes. You loved. Yeah. The Katsu sandwich place. Right. I didn't, I couldn't reserve a

spot there. It wasn't open, but they did, they were offering takeouts. Oh, good. So,
I'm gonna reserve a takeout. Good, good, good. I'm gonna eat at the hotel. Good. Yeah. Good.
You should order the one. The one that you said, right? Yes, yes. I will, I will. Yes. Yeah. Yeah.
You're staying inside the city, like the inside, the very central? Yeah, near Kyoto station. Oh,
near Kyoto station. Yes. Okay. A bit far from the restaurant, I guess. It was, it was. Yeah,
it was. But, you know, still manageable. Yeah. Yeah. Trainable. Yeah. You're planning to
go anywhere special? So, you know, all those famous places, right?
You mean temples and shrines? Temples and shrines. Yes. Like the, yeah, Kiyomizu-dera or
Fushimi-nari. Yeah. Or in all those places. I would like, would love to go, but I'm, honestly,
I don't know if I can go. Yeah. I'm still, you know, still kind of like, even though it's tomorrow,
but I'm like, yeah, still like, what should I do? Yeah. I feel like temples and shrines will be
very crowded though. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, obviously. Yeah. I mean, yeah. Not only like tourists,
but local Kyoto people visit and like mighties and then, yeah. So, true. But like, what about
like, not like shrines and temples, like. Yeah. Any recommendation? Yeah. You know,
it could be some random road. Oh. It could be a random fucking, I don't know, something. So,
um, so I love, um, Demachi-yanagi. Okay. Demachi-yanagi. Yes. And Kamogawa. Kamogawa.
Okay. You know, there, there's this big river. I do know that. Yeah. Called Kamogawa.
And it goes through from the south to the north, the whole city. And so it's like you have Kyoto
station here. Okay. And you have Shijo. Okay. It's like the very central, the central of the city.
And you have, I would say Nijo. It's like, and you have Kyoto Gosho. Okay. That's where the
imperials are staying. Okay. So, that's like the first, first, second, third, fourth.
You're talking about the name of the street. Yeah. How it's organized. Right. Right. Right.
Okay. So, and from Ichijo, well, there's no Ichijo, but from Nijo to like, um, Kyoto station,
it's like this crowded area. Oh, okay. Sure. So, if you go to Kamogawa, you go to like same, um,
this area. It's parallel. The crowdedness is parallel. Yeah. It's crowded Kamogawa zone,
but if you go like northern than Nijo, it becomes like less crowded. Less crowded. Okay. And almost
nobody. Oh. Yeah. And Demachiyanagi is like northern than Nijo. And, um,
I love that place. It's very peaceful. It's very cozy. Very calm. Very local, I would say.

Many like kids are like playing in the, in the river. Okay. Um, they have a little sweet shop,
Japanese sweet shop. They have like takeout and like eating.
And yeah. What would be the, like a similar city in Tokyo?
It's like, have you ever been to like Yanesen area? Yes. It has like some kind of vibe,
similar vibe with like that, like peacefulness. Okay. Like a slow
coziness. Uh-huh. Uh-huh. With, but with the nature. Uh-huh. Okay. Yeah. Okay. So,
I recommend that place. Got it. Thank you. Yeah. The northern Kyoto. Yeah. Yeah.
You have a little shoten-gai, little shoten-gai from Demachiyanagi. That's
a good place. Good place? Yeah. Very local. Okay. Very local. All right. I'm assuming then
if you go there at Gantan, everything will be closed if it's too local, right? Yeah. True.
Yeah. Can be, can be closed. Or they open for like a ganjitsu. Oh, it's either that or. Oh,
yeah. Sure. Sure. I'm not sure. Yeah. Yeah. Do they, do Kyoto, do they reserve
sobas for Gantan's? You know, did they do like the takeout reserved sobas?
Or no, is that not a thing? I have no idea. No idea? Okay. Okay. No idea.
But there are many soba shops though. Right? Yeah. There are many. Right? They're like,
are they famous for sobas? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Like Nishin soba, especially. Oh, Nishin soba.
Yeah. Soba with Nishin on top. Oh, okay. Fish. Oh, okay. Very kind of sweet, sweet-sauced
fish on top of that. I see. Okay. Okay. That's good. Or Yuba soba. Yuba? Ah, Yuba. Yeah. Yuba
I'm aware. I think you can find some place. Sobas on Gantan, right? Yeah. Yeah. Not sure
they're available for takeouts. But if they're open, that'd be great. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I can
just, yeah. Okay. Yeah. If it's crowded. Yeah. Right. I don't know what to expect, but yeah,
I'll just have very low expectations. Yeah. So if Kyoto was very crowded, as you're going to
spend like, I don't know how many long, but multiple days. Yeah. One option is go to,
for example, like Nara, taking a train. It just takes 30, 40 minutes to get Nara station. So
just go down and just spend time at Nara. Well, right. The deers don't have the nematsunechi,
right? That's great. Yeah. Yeah. They're not going to close at six. That's great.
Yeah. Or going to Kusatsu. Kusatsu? Yeah. The Biwako, Shiga. Yeah. You have like a lake,
you know Biwako? Yeah. The Biwako river. Yeah. The Biwako... I don't know what it is in English,
but yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Like huge lake. Huge lake. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. What do you do there?
No, not many things. No, actually just go and they have like a terrace,
and just go up and just see the site. Oh, you just watch the lake? Yeah. And I guess you have
the yuransen that you can hop on and just... Oh, the ship? Yeah. Ship. Yes. Yes. I see. Yeah. It's
very big. Lakes is very big. It's like an ocean. The biggest one in Japan, right? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Must be good. But there's not many, not many things to... Not many, yeah. Yeah. Maybe I just
don't know, but... Yeah. Yeah. I get it. Yeah. Okay. Gotcha. Gotcha. Gotcha. Right. So yeah,
I'll be doing that tomorrow, so... Right. Yeah. All right. Thanks for sitting, guys. Bye-bye.
