Welcome to Kevin's English Room Podcast.
Hello.
Hello.
This one?
Hello.
Yes, I was in middle school in America and there was one teacher that was a baseball fan apparently.
And he announced like, did you guys see the world classic baseball? No one did.
Like, well, you know, we have Kevin in the room, but you know, Japan won and I was proud.
Did you see the game?
Yes, I saw the game. I saw the game.
And I was like, I was kind of excited for it. I was proud to be Japanese in the classroom.
Right.
Yeah, right. I remember that moment.
Yeah, but no one saw it. No one was like, what? There was a baseball tournament?
It was the first time. I think it was the first game.
I see.
When Japan won. It was the very first event when it opened.
Yeah.
No one knew about it. Unfortunately.
Yeah, even America.
Yeah.
Yeah, it's like a huge baseball country.
Yeah, but it's not as strong as Japan.
Yeah, Japan's baseball is very strong.
It's huge.
Japan has won the world classic baseball several times now.
I think so, yeah.
Yeah, right. More than America.
I don't know.
Don't know?
World classic baseball is the name, right?
I remember the first one when we were in middle school.
I guess that was Donichu. I had Bukatsu or something.
But there's a TV at the, that was, I guess, Shokuinshitsu or Shichokakushitsu or something like that.
And we were playing Bukatsu.
Yeah.
And then, I guess, finished Bukatsu and then saw the TV all together.
Everyone's talking about it.
So, WBC, five times so far.
And in order, the winners, Japan, Japan, Dominican Republic, America, Japan.
Wow.
So, Japan won three times.
America won once.
And the other was Dominican Republic.
So, Japan is a very strong baseball country.
I think for the first one, at least, there's no, like, major league baseball player in the United States, USA team, I guess.
Oh, why is that?
Oh, really?
Yeah, that's what I kind of heard.
So, I guess America's like, well, they're not the star players, so forget about it.
We're not into that.
Really?
Yeah.
Oh, I wonder what's up.
Yeah, I think that's like, there's no, I guess, the contract thing or whatever.
There's not enough of a, like, a good deal to be in the game, I guess.
I think so.
You have to gather one place and leave the club.
Yeah.
I don't know.
Is that the same thing happening with World Cup?
World Cup football?
Yeah.
For, no.
Oh.
World Cup is, not for World Cup, but Olympic Games.
Oh, Olympic Games.
Is America like, we're not going to have, we don't have to have the star players over there.
I mean, I was talking about the football.
Olympic football, not only America, but like most of the clubs, especially European clubs.
Oh, they're like that?
Yeah.
Oh.
I see.
Yeah.
That's why it's under 23 years old teams in Olympics.
What do you mean?
What do you mean?
It's like a, it's a rule of the Olympic Games.
The football teams are, like, only, you can collect only the players under 23 years old.
Oh.
So the Olympic side is gatekeeping now?
That's what they say.
So it's not like the star players are opting out.
It's more like they're not invited?
Yeah.
I mean, even they're invited, they're not going to come in anyway.
Okay.
But, yeah.
Wait, why would they not go if they're invited?
Let's say, for example.
It's the Olympics.
Why would they not go?
I don't know.
To represent their country?
Yeah.
But they have World Cup.
That's bigger than the Olympic Games.
The Olympic Games?
Yeah.
Oh.
Okay.
Yeah.
I see.
Why?
Is it because of money?
You think there's more money in the World Cups?
I don't know.
I don't know.
No, no?
Hmm.
Hmm.
And I, yeah, I don't know.
But for the Olympics, it's not like game.
Olympics is for the not professional, for not professionals.
Oh, okay.
Yeah.
So, that's why there's not professional footballers, not kind of invited.
Oh.
So, same goes for Japan.
Olympic football, right?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
So, none of the star, star players are there.
Hmm.
Oh.
I see.
I see.
Yeah.
But there's a concept of overage waku.
Uh-huh.
And each country can call, I guess, three players that forever.
Okay.
In that country.
Okay, anyone.
Yeah, anyone.
I see.
Yeah.
So, sometimes Japan, maybe it's like star players, like three star players.
Okay.
Yeah.
But basically, it's younger.
Hmm.
Younger national team.
I see.
So, that's why it's not as, you know, not as exciting.
Yeah.
As World Cup, then.
Yeah.
It's a different thing, kind of.
World Cup, that's based on country, though, right?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Still big.
Still big.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Same for like basketball.
America, you know, you have NBAs.
Yeah, huge.
Yeah.
There are, like, not many, well, this last Olympic Games, there were, like, huge star
players were joined to the Olympic Games, but before that, they were, like, kind of.
Oh, really?
Yeah.
None of the superstars were there.
People just didn't really watch it that much.
It's big, but, you know, they're not there.
Yeah.
Because they have their season of their professional basketball life.
I see.
It's difficult for them to leave the clubs.
I see.
During the season, kind of.
Oh.
That's why it's so difficult.
Yeah, there were LeBrons and those star players.
Okay.
This time, they were, like, we call them, like, a dream team, I guess.
Okay.
Yeah, but several years ago, there were no big names.
So, I guess for sports that have become too big, Olympics sort of becomes financially
not as important.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And it's difficult for them, because they have contract with the clubs.
That they have to respect.
Yeah, yeah.
Even before the Olympics.
Yeah.
Because once they collect it, called to the national teams.
Yeah.
For example, Japanese player, football player playing in UK, for example, at least a week,
they have to, you know, not being with the club.
Yeah.
And for that player, it's a loss, kind of, for him.
Right.
For the games.
Yeah.
To appeal his ability to the club.
Yeah.
To get the seed.
But it's okay if it's a World Cup, though.
Yeah.
Everyone sort of understands.
Yeah, because there's no, like, a club's game.
It's season off.
Oh, they do it when it's season off.
Yeah.
And everybody wants to go to the World Cup.
Oh, so I guess the World Cup sort of schedules their games according to the European scheduling.
Sort of, like, not have it overlap, I guess.
Yeah.
I'm not sure which sides are adjusting.
But it's made sure that it's not overlapping.
Oh, that's smart.
Yeah.
That's smart.
international week.
And there's no club's game in these two weeks.
Oh, that's smart.
Yeah, that's great.
Your fans and everything.
That's great.
Yeah.
Yeah.
But I guess not for the Olympics.
Not for the Olympics.
Different competitions.
Because it's all sports combined, right?
You can't just adjust to soccer or whatever.
Right, right.
Right, right.
Makes sense.
Makes sense.
Yeah.
Okay.
All right.
Thanks for listening, guys.
Thank you.
Bye-bye.
