Welcome to Kevin's English Room Podcast.
Hello.
What's up, guys?
How's it going?
So, are we going to do...
We're going to do some videos about Hawaii, right?
Yeah.
Are we going to talk about foods?
No, no, no. We're not planning on doing that.
So I want to know what did you eat?
Okay.
And what was the good foods?
I don't know, but foods...
I would say...
I went for...
So what I like to go for are the popular places.
Okay.
The ones that are trending on TikTok, social mediaand all that stuff.
Instead of finding it locally by foot.
I see.
I want to do the research first.
I'm very bad at finding things locally.
You know how I am, right?
The Kyoto thing.
You stroll around for a day.
Yeah, I can't decide.
So I'd like to decide early.
So yeah, I went to the popular places.
Poké Ball.
I would say that's like the number one food.
That's good.
You know, the experience in Hawaii.
Is that different from the ones that we can findin Japan?
Yeah, kind of different.
It's much more sauce-based.
Oh, I see.
Yeah.
Sauce-based?
You mean like a shoyu kind of?
It's like mayonnaise-ish, you know.
It's like what you find in California rolls whereit's sauce-based.
It's kind of like that.
I see.
Yeah, much more.
But you know how in Japan it's much more lighter, right?
The sauces are lighter.
Yeah.
It's like very liquidy, soy sauce, gomabura kindof.
Yes.
But in Hawaii, well, in America...
So I went to this place called Foodland.
Foodland?
Foodland.
It's a grocery store.
Oh, okay.
It's the number one most popular poké ball place.
Let me show you a picture.
It's not a restaurant.
It's not a restaurant.
It's like this.
Wow.
Like this.
So there's like so many types of poké ball.
And you choose whatever.
And they scoop it up.
And then they put it on top of the rice.
You can choose, yeah.
Wow.
You choose two.
It looks very nice.
It looks very nice, right?
So you can have like salmon tunas and like...
There's some varieties of fishes.
Yeah, right, right, right.
Marinated.
Right.
Like this is mahi onion, oyster.
Oyster.
All these stuff, right?
Spicy and all that stuff.
Mayo and yeah.
Wow.
That was great.
03:00
And it looks true.
Thick.
Like thicker than the ones we can find in Japan.
Right.
It looks like they use like mayonnaise.
They use thicker sauce.
Yeah, yeah.
So I would say this is number one.
Oh.
Yeah.
Nice, nice, nice.
I would say next one.
The food trucks.
The food trucks.
OK.
That was good.
I went to a place called Pit Stop.
OK.
Pit Stop Waikiki.
So it's a truck.
It's like this, right?
And the hamburger, look at that.
It's delicious.
It was delicious, man.
Delicious.
Yeah, it looks great.
Yeah.
Yeah, it's like a really narrow street.
And further down, there's a food truck.
And they sell burgers and fries and tacos.
Very nice.
Very nice, man.
Oh, it looks very delicious.
It was very junky.
Yeah.
Yeah, it was awesome.
It was awesome.
Yeah.
Oh, it looks nice.
Yeah.
And what else did we eat?
We ate.
So what I was also surprised was that there weren't much of the cliché Hawaiian foods you find inJapan.
OK.
Like garlic shrimp things.
Garlic shrimp.
Rokumoko.
Oh, yeah.
Rokumoko.
Pancakes.
Oh, yeah.
Marasada.
Yeah.
They were there.
They were all there.
But it wasn't like the poke bowl was like.
The biggest.
The biggest one.
It was just, it was out there.
It was the top.
Yeah.
Yeah.
We also ate at Cheesecake Factory.
You know where that is?
It's a chain restaurant.
Huge in America.
Right.
They sell a lot of cheesecake, different kinds ofcheesecake as well as.
It's like a dessert shop?
I mean, I guess it was originally a dessert shop.
But they have a huge list of savory foods as well.
Like pastas, pizzas, all that stuff.
A huge list.
And this is very popular.
I went there.
Cheesecake Factory.
Cheesecake Factory.
Yeah.
It was delicious.
It was great.
Yeah.
Did you try something you're familiar with?
Like.
Oh, yeah.
I went to Chick-fil-A.
Yeah, those ones.
Yes.
I went for Chick-fil-A.
It was awesome, I did.
I wanted to go for Chipotle, but it wasn't there.
Oh, okay.
Yeah, there weren't any.
I went to Chili's.
Chili's is a, yeah, it's a fast food place.
06:01
They're famous for like a cheese stick.
Okay.
Yeah, it's a huge cheese pull and it's delicious.
That also.
Yeah, I wanted to get Papa John's Pizza.
But I just, I couldn't squeeze it in.
Okay.
In the schedule, unfortunately.
So many things to try.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Can't imagine that.
Right.
I also went to a fancy restaurant where there wereno windows.
It was by the beach and there were no windows.
And it's just, you can see the sunset from therestaurant.
Very beautiful.
Nice.
That was awesome.
That was great.
Right.
Did you find like a steakhouse or something?
No, I actually did not go for a steakhouse.
Yeah, right.
That was one of the options.
But unfortunately, it didn't make it in our list.
What about like shrimps and lobsters and crabs andthose?
Yeah.
I went to like a local place where you can choosethe type of fish
and you can choose the types of like how it'scooked.
Okay.
Yeah.
And the sides and your base, like you want rice, brown rice, all that stuff.
And they cook it for you after it's ordered.
And you have like a plate.
And that was great.
That was great.
It was very fresh.
Oh, yeah.
I guess the seafoods were very nice.
It's fresh.
Yeah.
Yeah, absolutely.
I thought like Hawaii is more like pancakey orlike donut.
Yeah.
Those places.
Yeah.
True.
It's an island and you can...
There are many fishermen and fisher people.
Yes.
Yes.
There's this famous marasara.
The sweet ones.
Yeah, it's like a donut.
Yeah.
Called Leonard's.
It's probably the most famous one in Hawaii.
That was great.
It's awesome.
It was soft.
Yeah.
Juicy.
Right, it's fried.
It's like fried.
I'll just show you.
Yeah.
Isn't it like sata andagi in Okinawa?
They're different from that?
Yeah, but like softer, I would say.
OK.
Yeah, this one.
Leonard's.
It's like that.
Oh.
It's like cream donut.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Custard donut-ish, you know.
It's kind of like that.
Custard inside?
Right.
I bought the one with the custard inside.
You can also buy the one without it.
Yeah.
Yeah, I bought the one with the custard.
Not as sweet as you'd imagine.
Oh, really?
Yeah.
Trust me.
Not as sweet as you're imagining it.
09:03
OK, OK, OK.
It's much easier to, you know, eat.
I trust you.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
OK.
Believe you.
Oh, yeah.
Well, this store looks very the cliche Hawaiidonut shop.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Oh, it looks very nice.
Also, shaved ice was also huge in Hawaii.
Like the ones we can find in Japan, like kakigorithing?
It's much more creamier.
Yeah, it was like, it's like a Taiwan kakigori.
Oh, I see.
Yeah, like these.
It's got much more flavor to it.
It's much more milkier than in Japan's.
Many fruits inside.
Yeah, yes.
You sometimes have fruits.
You have ice creams.
And yeah.
Wow.
Very colorful.
Very colorful.
And the taste was pretty good.
Yeah, I loved it.
Very Hawaii.
Yeah.
Hawaii looking foods.
Right, right.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Nice.
Yeah.
Then I guess overall foods were pretty nice, Iguess.
I mean, it was.
I mean, I didn't get tired of it.
Oh, nice.
You know how we stayed in America or, you know,Europe for a week.
And it's like, oh my God, I want to go back toJapan and eat whatever.
I didn't have that much of it, you know.
Yeah, I mean, the fishes were there.
And.
It's kind of similar to Japan, like fresh seafood.
Right.
In terms of the umami from the seafoods, you cansatisfy yourself.
Right.
So jealous of those foods.
Yeah.
It was great.
It was great.
Ah, nice, nice, nice.
All right.
