Welcome to Kevin's English Room Podcast.
Hello.
So, this one.
Penguin-san.
Thank you.
Rednecks?
Rednecks, sir.
Rednecks?
What's that?
Rednecks?
You know, the southern-accented people.
Oh, I see.
Yeah.
Okay, okay.
Mardi Gras.
What's that?
Have you ever heard of it?
No?
Mardi Gras.
I didn't know that was Nambu.
I thought that was nationwide.
Okay, that's fine.
Yeah, but Mardi Gras, yeah, it's huge.
Mardi Gras days, um, Mardi Gras day.
So, every year, there's the Mardi Gras day, and this year, it's 3
Okay.
What happens is, okay, Mardi Gras, which translates to Fat Tuesday in French.
Oh, that's French.
Is a Christian festive day celebrated before the start of Lent.
Lent is a period of fasting and reflection.
It's known for its lively celebrations, parades, and indulgent feasts, making the last day of the carnival season.
I did not know this, but it was just a party, and it looks like less.
In school, we would, teachers would bring all these, I don't know what you call these, these beads
Okay.
And we would all wear them, and we would just party.
Oh.
Yeah.
They have like parades.
I think, yeah, I guess if you go to like a major city, they would do it, but in Rome, we did it in our school.
Yeah.
People, like during lunchtime, teachers would throw these beads necklaces.
Okay.
There's food all over, right, but it doesn't matter.
Oh.
Some go on the food.
Okay.
It's okay.
And then you'd catch it, you'd wear it.
Okay.
You know, so you have like tens and twenties of these necklaces, right?
Yeah.
And then you're sort of like, yay.
You're happy.
Yes.
Oh.
That's Mardi Gras.
You eat a lot?
Um, you don't necessarily eat a lot.
It was just, it's the necklace.
Oh, that's the main.
Yeah.
Because, yeah, the food is just everyday lunchtime food.
Oh, okay, okay.
Yeah.
We just did it during lunchtime, that's all.
I see, I see, I see.
Yeah.
Hmm.
It's like this, yeah.
Mardi Gras school, I searched for that.
It's like, you see kids wearing all these like necklaces.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
And this king's hat and shit like that.
Mardi Gras
Yeah.
Hmm.
Right.
I didn't know this was a southern thing.
Yeah.
You see these kids trying to catch the fucking necklace.
Yeah.
Well, it must be really fun for them.
Yeah, it was fun.
It was fun.
It was like, you know, it was a parade.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
It was huge.
It says it exists in worldwide because it's Christian thing.
But especially southern part of the USA do this like this big.
I guess according to him, right?
Yeah.
I didn't know it was a number thing.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Well, first of all, like it's French and you have Europe too, but they don't celebrate that much.
Oh, okay.
Okay.
Oh, okay.
Louisiana?
Is that close to your place?
Yeah.
Louisiana.
I think.
Yeah, I think it's close.
Yeah.
Hmm.
Louisiana State.
Yeah, kind of.
Kind of close.
Yeah.
It's the.
Yeah, it's south.
Right next to Texas.
Hmm.
Mardi Gras.
I didn't know this.
Hmm.
Then I think we had a day just like the Mardi Gras.
Yeah.
We celebrated Elvis Presley.
Okay.
I'm starting to now think that that was a regional thing.
Uh-huh.
Yeah, we had a day where we celebrated Elvis Presley.
Okay.
Okay.
So some of the signing grades.
Okay.
So what can they say, for example?
Yeah, it was eighth grade.
Okay.
For us.
They would dress up like Elvis.
Okay.
And they would like go on stage.
Huh.
They would dance.
And perform?
Yeah, kind of just dance.
Elvis song?
Yeah.
Okay.
And then many would go down to the cafeteria tables.
To see that performance?
To sort of like dance with the kids.
Oh.
I danced with one of the Elvises.
And it was fun.
Okay.
It was fun.
Okay.
Yeah.
Hmm.
I can be like, I don't know, like state or city, regional thing.
Right.
Yeah.
What was the name of the festival?
I think, if only I know.
If only I know.
Elvis birthday celebration?
I don't know if it's the birthday.
Hmm.
Wasn't it like your school typical thing?
Yeah, maybe.
It can be?
Maybe.
Maybe your, I don't know, like the school principal loves Elvis.
Yeah.
It's possible.
It's possible.
Let me ask, let me ask chat.
Yeah.
Do American school have a day to celebrate Elvis Presley?
I was in a school in Georgia, and my school had that day.
American schools don't generally have a nationwide Elvis Presley day.
What you experience in Georgia is most certainly a regional or local tradition.
The U.S. doesn't have a national day for Elvis.
His birthday, January 8th, is sometimes noted by fans.
And in Mississippi, Georgia and the South, Elvis is a huge cultural figure in the South.
And some schools, especially in the Southeast, Georgia is in the Southeast,
may hold fun spirit day or cultural activities around him.
Kind of like how schools might have a Dr. Seuss day or Pi Day.
Hmm.
It's not standardized.
It depends on school district administrators and individual teachers.
So it was like a local thing.
Okay.
Yeah.
Hmm.
So that's one.
I didn't know this, but yeah, we had it.
Elvis Presley day.
Yeah.
Elvis Presley day.
Yeah.
That sounds fun.
Right.
Yeah.
Right.
All right.
Thanks for listening, guys.
Thank you.
Bye-bye.
Yeah.
About the...
These situations are really tough.
What do you mean?
Mardi Gras
Mardi Gras.
Oh, Mardi Gras?
Yeah.
I don't know.
Oh, like it's French, it's English, it's French.
Yeah.
I don't know how to pronounce this.
Yeah.
You can say it in French.
Mardi Gras.
Yeah.
But anyways, this is like a really famous festival.
And you know the real carnival in Brazil?
That's the same thing.
Oh, okay.
Yeah.
They're doing Mardi Gras.
Yeah.
So on Mardi Gras, they do like carnivals.
Okay.
And then there's three like famous carnivals.
One is the Rio de Janeiro, and one is Venezia in Italy.
Okay.
And one is New Orleans in the United States.
Oh, okay.
Yeah.
That's the top three.
Top three.
I know the image of like doing the huge carnivals and everything.
Oh, okay, okay, okay.
That was Mardi Gras.
Oh, okay.
Oh, I didn't know that.
I didn't know that.
So it's actually bigger than what we expected.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
They're called Mardi Gras.
Okay.
Okay.
All right.
Thanks for listening, guys.
Thank you.
Bye-bye.
