New York Trip and Jet Lag
Welcome to Kevin's English Room Podcast!
Hello.
Oh, it's been a while.
It's been about three weeks or so.
Yeah.
Two or three weeks.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
We've been in New York.
Yes.
First episode, back from New York.
Yeah.
How are you?
How you feeling?
Okay.
New York.
Tell me everything, man.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
You look a little like kind of fuzzy because of all the jet lags.
Absolutely.
Yeah.
Do you?
Me too.
Oh, you too.
Me too.
Okay, okay.
Very, very affected.
Okay.
Okay.
Yeah.
How do you feel now?
Now is when I was in New York, I didn't feel that much of a jet lag, but going back, that's
that hits harder.
Okay.
Okay.
I think I, about around 5pm, 6pm, that's when I get my first hit of like, "Oh, shit, I have
to sleep."
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Then the second hit is like 10pm, 10 or 11pm.
10pm, okay.
Yeah.
Right.
When I sleep at like 11 or 12pm, I usually wake up around like three.
Okay.
Yeah, that's when I wake up.
My body feels so...
Wow, wow.
And then I force myself back to sleep.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Then I wake up again around 7am.
Yeah.
That's kind of like my routine now.
Okay, okay.
Yeah.
So you're kind of not like sleep enough?
I don't feel that much of a lack of sleeping, but probably, right?
Yeah, because you go to the bed like 11, 12 and then wake up at 3.
Right.
Yeah.
I'm sure my quality of sleep is getting lower.
But yeah, that's kind of like my cycle.
Okay, okay.
Yeah.
How about for you, man?
Yeah, me too.
It took me about four or five days when I arrived to the United States to adjust the
time, right?
So it was actually hard for me to adjust the times.
So in the US?
In the United States, yeah.
It took me like five days.
Okay.
Yeah, I was like...
More than half.
Yeah, almost a week.
Yeah.
And then, yes, after I returned to Japan, like, I guess it will take about a week to
like readjust.
Right.
So yeah.
Are you still in the middle of the night trying to adjust?
Yeah, yeah.
Still recovering?
Yeah.
What's your cycle with the sleeping cycle and everything?
I get sleepy when I went, like, same as you, like four or five.
Like so sleepy, like feel like I need to go to bed.
And then, yeah, but I try to wake up because I need to adjust time.
And then I go to bed like around 11, 12.
Even like try to wake up late.
And then, but yeah, I wake up like five, six, which is quite early to me.
Even like four.
Adjusting to Japanese time and sleep schedule
Like today, I woke up like seven.
So like it's getting like late, late.
So I feel like...
Which is good.
Yeah.
I'm like getting Japanese.
Okay.
Yeah.
Yeah, becoming Japanese again.
The other day, I was also like you trying to adjust to the Japanese time.
Yeah.
You know, trying to wake up late and everything.
Even when that first sleepiness hits around five or six p.m., I try to not sleep.
I've been successful with not sleeping.
Oh, great.
The other day, like after like four or five consecutive successes, I fell asleep at five.
Yeah.
And I woke up at 10 p.m.
I slept at five.
Wow.
I slept at five p.m. and I woke up at 10 p.m.
Wow.
Feeling terrible.
Yeah.
Right?
And then I woke up.
Yeah.
Right?
And then I was like, oh my god.
Fuck.
10 p.m.
Yeah.
What the fuck am I gonna do?
Yeah, right.
I don't know.
I was...
I ate dinner.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
Not bad.
Yeah.
I took a shower.
Okay.
And then I tried to sleep, but I couldn't.
Wow.
And I found myself watching TV at 4 a.m.
Wow.
Then I fell asleep at like 4.30.
Yeah.
And then I woke up at like seven.
Not bad.
Yeah, I woke up at seven.
Okay.
Yeah.
I woke up at seven.
And then I...
After waking up at seven, around 10 a.m. is when I really felt the fatigue.
But I kept myself awake.
Yeah.
Wow.
And I successfully was active throughout.
Okay.
Wow.
That's a tough day.
That was a tough day.
Wow.
Yeah.
Never lose to that 5 a.m.
Yeah.
If you lose that time, yeah.
That's bad.
It's gonna be terrible.
Yeah, I learned my lesson.
Yeah, right, right.
Flight from New York to Japan
I remember in the returning flight from the United States, from New York, so it took us
like 14 hours of flight, right?
And the departing time was like 11 a.m.
Yes.
And arriving time was like 5 p.m.
Yes.
And it took me like 14 hours of flight.
Yes.
And you tried to like wake up whole flight, right?
Yeah, yeah.
And did you made it actually?
You're talking about the flight in the flight.
Yeah, returning flight back to Japan.
Yeah, yeah.
That's actually the flight time was 1, 145 p.m.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
KFK 145.
True, 145.
To arriving in Japan, that was around 5.
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, I tried to wake up.
Yes, my plan was waking up through the whole flight.
Yeah, for like 14 hours.
Yeah, 14 hours.
Jet lag recovery
And then after 14 hours, start my day from 5 p.m., right?
Yeah, yeah.
Not sleeping.
Yeah.
Well, the moment I got on the flight, I sat down.
That's when I fell asleep.
Okay.
Before even liftoff.
I was like, I sat down in my seat, put the seatbelt on.
Yeah.
Boom.
I was like, "What the hell?"
It's still like 2 p.m.
I'm like, "What the hell?"
Like, "Why am I sleeping at 2 p.m. when my plan is to stay awake the whole time?"
Yeah, yeah.
But after sleeping, so I fell asleep at 2 p.m.
I slept for about, I don't know, I think like 30 minutes, 40 minutes, something like that.
Yeah.
But I did stay up for 10 hours.
Right.
11 hours.
11 hours.
And then I fell asleep for one hour.
Okay.
Well, not bad at all.
Yeah, not bad.
Yeah.
That's the only sleeping time.
Wow.
Wow.
I managed to, yeah.
Oh, great.
You made it.
So, less than two hours.
Yeah, yeah.
Oh, great.
So, you arrived in Japan with like full of tiredness.
Yeah, full of fatigue, ready to sleep.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Like a baby.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
That's great.
But the plan wasn't that successful, you know.
Oh, really?
Yeah, I'm still feeling the jet lag.
That's right.
You know, my plan wasn't, you know, was to just using that night only.
Yeah.
Me too.
Like I didn't know that actually like these jet lags are that heavy.
I know.
Like that effective.
I know, right?
Like I thought it was just like one day thing.
Right.
And you manage it and you can make it, you can deal with those.
But actually like still like I'm feeling bad.
Are you doing anything to recover?
Yeah, like I'm waking up like at the same time every morning.
As usual before.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I go to the bed as usual before.
Yeah.
And then that's the only thing I do.
Okay.
Like how about like sunlight?
Yeah.
Yeah, like when I wake up, I try to like walk around or like get sunlight to like, you know,
just the times inside.
Yeah, they say that's effective.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Even though I don't know how effective that is.
Yeah.
But yeah, I've heard that.
Yeah.
But still.
Still, right?
Still.
Yeah.
But how was your days in New York?
Talking about New York
Yeah.
Yeah.
Let's talk about that.
Let's talk about that in the next episode.
Lots to talk about.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Thanks for sitting guys.
Thank you.
