Welcome back to another episode of Kansai English Stream Podcast!
You okay there, Yamachan?
Um, yeah.
You were like, you kinda hesitated before we started, like...
Well, actually...
Something happened?
Can you give me some... just three seconds, please?
Yeah, sure. One, two, three. Let's go, Yamachan! Let's go, man!
*laughs*
What happened?
No, no, no. I was just trying to find the message.
Yes, yes, yes.
And, uh... alright, here we go. Here we go.
We got one?
Yes, yes, yes.
Let's go!
Um, yeah, I've got... um, yeah.
Okay, that's it.
Mm-hmm.
Okay.
Okay.
So...
*laughs*
Okay.
Okay.
Um...
You okay there, Yamachan?
Yes. Alright. I've got this one.
Everything under control here?
Okay, yes.
Yeah, okay. Let's go.
I'm the boss here, so... okay.
Um...
This is from...
*laughs*
This is from Chihiro-san.
Okay, Chihiro-san.
Thank you, Chihiro-san.
Thank you so much.
And, uh...
Hi! My name is Chihiro.
Hi.
I'm the host of your Random Talking on podcast.
Thank you.
Thank you.
So, I've listened to your podcast titled,
"What am I supposed to have stolen before you eat me?"
Ah! Okay.
And might know an answer to Kevin's question.
Okay. Thank you.
Actually, I... we've still got some messages about this topic.
Mm-hmm.
And thank you for those messages.
Yes.
So, I... I continue.
Yes.
I am not a native English speaker, so not, like, super, super confident.
But here it is.
"I guess by saying, 'What am I supposed to have stolen?'"
"the female character implied she didn't have any motivation to steal anything."
Mm-hmm.
"So to her question, her own answer would be, 'There's nothing I would want or have...
have to steal, so no way to be a suspect.'"
"So the focus on the sentence would be, 'She isn't even a suspect,'"
"rather than, 'What is it, the thing she would steal?'"
"Hope this helps."
Okay.
Well, first of all, thanks for the message.
Yes. Thank you, Chihiro-san. Thank you so much.
I'm trying to process that in my head right now.
Right. So...
Yeah.
This is going to be a deep and...
But we're going to... we have to make sure that we keep this under 10 minutes.
Yeah.
This time we're going to... we're really going to keep track of time, okay?
Right, right.
Hmm.
So she's implying that the meaning is more of an importance here.
Yes.
I understand the meaning. Like, I agree with her on that.
03:00
Like, the female character was implying that she did not steal anything
and that she's trying to position herself, you know, to be like,
"Okay, what... there's nothing that I stole... there's nothing that motivates me to steal anything."
I understand.
But like, the question that we were left when we last discussed this was like,
there's two meanings to the word "supposed to have," right?
Yeah.
One was...
"Nani wo yatteiru to omotteiru?"
"Nani wo yaru beki?" versus like, "Nani wo yatta to omowareteru?"
Right.
Right?
The distinguish... how to distinguish between the two...
"Nani wo yaru beki dattara?"
Right, "Nani wo yaru beki dattara?" Right.
It was the ultimate question that we were left with.
Yeah.
And...
Right.
Right.
I think we've gotten... we've...
went... we've went through this.
Right.
Haven't we? We've talked it out.
True.
Right.
Then...
Do you have any other hints then?
No.
Okay.
So...
So we are still in the...
trouble.
Right.
Right.
But, you know, Toshiro-san, I do agree with you on that.
We do agree on what you're implying here.
Yeah.
Absolutely.
So, let me make it clear.
So what we need to solve is how you can tell...
the differences...
Yes.
between...
like for example, this phrase.
"Nani wo nusunda to omowareteru no?"
or "Nani wo nusumu beki dattara wake?"
Right?
Exactly.
Without any...
situation.
Yes.
Without any context.
Right.
If you read simply that phrase, then how to...
to tell which meaning...
Right.
is there.
Yes.
That.
Yes.
Another great example that we've discovered after recording the podcast was the sentence,
"This document was supposed to have been edited one year ago."
Yeah.
So listening to that sentence, we've ended up with two possible meanings.
One was, "Kono dokument wa ichi nen mae ni henshu sa rete ita hazu."
06:06
Yeah.
That means, "It's already been edited."
Okay.
Another one is, "Kono dokument wa ichi nen mae ni henshu sa rete ita hazu datta."
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
But it's still not been edited.
Right.
That's the two different...
two clear different meanings.
Yeah, and completely different.
Yeah.
One's already edited, one's not edited.
Yeah.
That's really difficult to distinguish.
That's a nice example.
Right, right.
So...
Right, but think about that phrase.
Even in Japanese, when we say, "Sono bensho wa ichi nen mae ni henshu sa rete ita hazu."
"Senshu sa reta hazu."
You know, then we cannot tell if that document was really edited or it's just set so...
Right, right, right, right, right.
The phrase, "Sareta hazu" is difficult to understand if it's done or not.
Yeah.
"Sareta."
"Sareta to iwareteiru."
Like, yeah.
So that's our point, huh?
Yes, that's what we've...
the problem that we were left with, that we were not able to solve.
Right, right.
Yes.
Yes, yes, yes.
So still, if you...
if there's anybody who has an answer to this point,
please send us some letter or document or papers or books, TV shows, YouTube channel.
Yep.
Any hints is appreciated.
Yes.
Thank you.
Yeah.
Yeah.
We should...
we should close the podcast.
Okay, let's...
Yeah.
We...
let's close the podcast in like a really unique way.
Okay, unique way.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Do you have any ideas?
Um...
To be unique?
Yeah.
Um...
Let's stand out from the other podcasters.
Okay.
Yeah.
Then let's shout something loud.
Okay, let's do it.
Together.
Okay.
Shout out something loud together.
Yeah.
That's what has to be, has to be, you know, suit for this episode.
Got it.
Just anything on your mind.
Just popping in your mind.
So, any word that pops into your mind.
Yes.
We're going to shout it out.
Yes.
And then we're going to end the podcast.
Yes.
That's a really unique way of ending a podcast, right?
Yeah.
09:00
That's going to stand out, actually.
Yeah.
All right.
So, um...
Alert for the guys who...
Alert for the listeners with headphones.
This is going to hurt, maybe.
Yeah.
Be careful with that.
Be careful.
Yeah.
Um...
Hit.
We're going to count to three, then we'll do it.
Okay.
We don't want to, like, surprise the listeners.
Yeah, yeah, right, right.
Right.
If you suddenly just scream, it'll just be like...
A very unpleasant experience.
Right, right.
I mean, we don't want that in the podcast, right?
Right.
Yeah.
We want to make sure our listeners are, like, comfortable listening to our voices.
So, like, we're going to count to three and then just shout.
Yeah.
So, be careful, please.
Yeah.
Have you decided the word you're going to shout?
Just one word?
Yeah.
You know, it really doesn't have to be...
Let's just...
Okay, whatever.
It's up to you.
All right.
All right.
All right.
Yeah.
I've got one.
Um...
Okay, I've got one.
Okay.
Here we go.
Okay.
Three, two, one.
Sneakers!
Sneakers!
Sneakers!
Sneakers!
