Hey guys welcome back to another episode of Kevin's English Room Podcast. I'm Kevin here with Yamachan.
So last time we talked about how all size of fast food drinks are refillable.
I want to talk to you about the size of the normal dishes in restaurants or fast food in the United States.
Have you been to the United States? Yeah I did.
You've been for how long? One month.
I went to Salt Lake City, or near Salt Lake City.
I once went to a restaurant but I don't actually remember the things.
Was that like a steakhouse?
I remember the meat was huge. It is.
It was huge for me.
Everything in the United States is so huge.
Maybe not McDonald's and all the multi-billion dollar franchise businesses.
Maybe that's not huge but more local ones like the local hamburger shop or sandwich or whatever.
Chinese food, Italian. They serve their dishes huge.
They are so huge. How big is that?
We were a family of four. Father, mother, sister and me.
We go out and we usually order two plates. That was enough.
For four? For four people we usually order two.
Really? Or maybe one side.
So like a pasta, salad as a side, and pasta. What are some of the main dishes?
The aqua pasta thing. What was that? Like fish.
Right, fish. Some kind of fish dish. I can't recall at the moment.
We would buy two main dishes and one side dish.
As a family of four, that was a little bit more than what we actually needed.
We ordered doggy bags at the end. You know what doggy bags are?
Yeah, for bringing the food back to your house.
We ordered doggy bags at the end to bring the food that was left over and eat it tomorrow.
Was that more expensive than that in Japan?
No, I don't think it's expensive. I think it's just a slightly bit lower.
Really? Right. The price range is just like, I don't know, maybe like 20 or 30% lower.
That's great. 10 or 20. 10 or 20% lower than the Japanese price range.
Really? Right. Compared to like Tokyo, you know?
Yeah. Georgia is lots of room for real estate, so lower cost to run the business.
03:04
But it was huge. So you have to be careful if you're going abroad and ordering dishes at a restaurant.
You have to remember that. One dish per person is way too much for you.
You're not going to be able to eat it. You're going to kill yourself. So be careful with that.
Is that designed for the multiple people?
No. It's designed for one person.
That's why you know American people are basically huge.
Right. Maybe this doesn't apply to places like New York or some of the more city areas where people are more slim.
Oh, Georgia people are huge.
Yeah, the more rural it gets, the wider per capita it gets. The wider waste per capita it gets.
Oh, right, right, right. That's interesting, right? That's interesting.
It becomes more of a car society, right? People ride cars. They don't ride bicycles. They don't walk.
They don't do sports. They do drive-thrus and they eat in at restaurants. They don't cook as much.
That really leads to a bigger society.
Bigger society, yeah.
So you have to be careful when you're ordering dishes.
Yeah, that's important. You have to be careful about that.
You can see a bit of that culture in, for example, TGI Fridays. You know there's TGI Fridays in Japan, right?
I think their plates are a little bit bigger. Have you been there before?
Yeah, I've been there sometimes.
You don't feel like it's a little bit bigger?
No, it's just delicious. I've never thought that it's too much.
Oh, okay. But I guess, okay, yeah. Compared to the "oshare" restaurants, right?
They serve like... Like Mos Burger. It's a Japanese burger shop.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Compared to the Mos Burger, TGI Fridays, the plates are bigger.
Well, I'm only recalling this because it shows a slight...
You can only see a glance of how the American plates are so much bigger.
Like, that's still small. TGI Fridays in Japan, their plates are smaller than the original ones.
They're so much bigger. So much more french fries.
That's great, by the way. I like french fries.
By the way, I think TGI Fridays... I love TGI Fridays, by the way.
Me too. Me too. I love their hamburgers.
Jack Daniels burger. Yeah, and french fries.
You like the french fries? Yeah, I do.
06:02
Okay, anyway. We'll talk about the french fries later.
But like, the burgers, like the patties. I think their quality is getting lower and lower every time.
I think they're drying up the patties, you know, in my opinion.
Like, five years ago? By the way, I used to work at TGI Fridays.
Oh, really? I've never known that. Yeah, I used to work at TGI Fridays.
Really? When? When you were a college student? When I was a college student.
Oh, really? But like, I did this for like, what? I don't know, like...
What? Less than one year. Absolutely. Like, three months, right?
Yeah, okay. Just three months. The people were...
Oh, really? I'm not gonna talk too much about the people, but they were just...
I didn't get along with them. So, that's what happened.
You just went inside of the TGI Fridays, right?
And you've seen around. Right, right, right.
And finished. Right.
So, like, so... Anyway. Yeah.
So, like... The quality. I thought like five years ago, like five or six years ago, their burgers were...
I loved them. They were really good. They were juicy, right?
They were really hot out of the oven, kind of. Kind of quality.
But like, lately, it's cold. It's dried up.
Soggy. What is soggy? Soggy.
Soggy? Oh, really? Yeah, right. Soggy.
Like, it's like, soggy.
Let's look it up on Google and see how it actually means soggy.
Soggy. Yeah. Soggy.
You see, it's "pasapasa shiteru." That means kind of dry thing. Right.
But another thing you said was "bechabechoshiteru." Right.
"Nettori." Right. It's a bit like witty. Soggy is "nettori."
Okay, so what I mean by... Okay, so dried up, I mean the patty.
The soggy, I mean the buns. Oh, really? The buns.
Oh, I never thought of that. You never thought of it before? Yeah.
When was the last time you went to a T.J. Friday's? I don't know.
You should go there again and check the quality. Okay. You'll be disappointed.
So I don't go there as often. I don't go there as often anymore.
Do you have any typical favorite hamburger shop in Japan?
Which one do you prefer? I would have to say...
McDonald's because of their quality on price level.
Or I'd say Shake Shack for their... Shake Shack.
Yeah, right. Just looking at the quality of the burger. Is that delicious for you?
It's very delicious for me. Like, I mean, American people. It's a good quality.
Yeah, I like it. They're very, I guess, you know, tasty.
But I usually just cook my own. Oh, that's the best.
Remember the last time we did the YouTube channel on my original hamburger?
I love that hamburger so much. I love the sauce.
Oh, just, you know, the professional sauce, right? Right. The ketchup, mayonnaise, mustard sauce.
Right. But that's so good. Yeah, that was so good. It was so delicious.
09:01
I get to choose how big the patty is. I get to choose how cooked up the patty is.
And, you know, all the customization that I can do. I like that. I like it.
True, true. That's it. The best way to make it for your own.
Yeah. We're going to talk about French fries in the next episode.
Okay. Of course.
Alright. We'll see you in the next episode.
