After practicing barefoot for the sports day in the elementary school playground, five of the students complained of pain that appeared to be burns.
According to the Tomioka City Board of Education, on the afternoon of June 12th, 178 fifth and sixth grade students practiced a dance to be performed at the sports day in the playground of Tomioka Elementary School in Tomioka City, and five of them complained of pain in the soles of their feet that appeared to be burns.
All of them were treated for minor symptoms and have since recovered.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, at multiple observation points around Tomioka City on that day, a maximum temperature of around 30°C was observed at around 2pm, and the city's Board of Education believes that the cause was practicing barefoot as the temperature of the sand in the schoolyard rose.
