Welcome to Kevin's English Room Podcast!
Hello, hello, hello.
Hey guys.
A quick shout out.
Okay.
We are doing a spin-off of this show.
It is, the show is called Kevin's English Room Podcast Plus.
Yeah, that's called Kevin's English Room Podcast Plus.
That's exactly how you say it.
You have to say it in the exact way.
Yes.
And you can listen to that on Amazon Music.
Yes.
Only on Amazon Music.
Yeah, which is free.
It's free.
And so, it's like a five-minute show.
And on the show, we answer English questions that we get from the DMs.
Yes.
Like, what's the nuance of this and this?
How is it different?
And it's a quick kind of like, oh, maybe I learned something kind of show.
Yes.
It's a make-up of something show.
Right, right.
Hopefully.
It is, yeah.
So, feel free to check it out if you're interested.
All righty.
All right.
All right.
Thanks.
OK.
So, I've got, oh, you want me to do the plus show?
Not yet.

Yeah?
OK.
Wait, what?
From where?
From, オレが, お前を?
OK.
OK.
OK.
好きな歌の話
So, 好きな歌の話。
I guess that's a love song.
They're talking about the favorite love song and...
Understood.
Yeah.
You want that singer to say 俺はお前を instead of 俺は君を.
You think this is better.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, that's right.
So I was wondering,
in English, the words that describe you and the other person are
you and I, right?
So how do you express the feeling of you and I
or the feeling of me and you in the lyrics?
Is it something that can be understood by the translation of the first and second sentences?
Even in everyday conversation, when a man says he loves you,
where do you judge whether it's me, me, or me?
Or is there no such concept in the first place?
Then, like me,
I wonder if you don't have the feeling that you don't want to be called.
I'm not sure if I was able to explain the question well,
but I'd be happy if you could tell me.
I can't speak English at all,
so I'm listening to your podcast while I'm on the train to get used to hearing.
Thank you.
Your workplace is introducing hip-hop,
and you're doing hip-hop while you're at work.
Wow, really?
Like, I don't know.
Like, some people could be like,
Oh my god, make it stop!
Like, I want to focus!
Yeah, right.
Wow.
It's like a chaos.
Yeah, it is chaos.
If it's me, I'm okay.
I'm okay with chaos.
Maybe for someone like you,
you might be like,
I need to focus on this Excel sheet!
Yeah.
Like, right?
Right.
Wow.
But, anyway.
I sometimes hear it very clearly and understand the meaning of it,
若者の一人称の選択の悩み
but it's mostly about being late,
so I become a suspicious person on the train.
I'm sorry I'm taking so long.
I'm looking forward to various activities from now on.
Please take care of your health and enjoy your work.
Thank you.
This question is kind of like really similar to what we get for Amazon Music.
True.
Plus episodes.
True.
Like, that could be an example.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
To answer off, there's a lot of ways in English to,
but not as much as Japan,
but like, of like, trying to get the nuance of the girlfriend-boyfriend.
For example, like, saying honey, sweetie, darling.
True.
My honey.
Yeah.
My honey.
My chocolate.
Yeah.
My chocolate milk.
Why not?
My marshmallow.
Yeah, right?
Baby.
My baby?
Right.
So, there's a lot of, I think, lyrics with the words like baby, honey, all that stuff.
So, that really gives off a lover vibe.
Not only you, I can also use those words to call your partner.
True, that's true.
But from, like, me, like, 俺 vibe, I don't think there are any of those, like, 一人称.
Me, I, myself.
There aren't really varieties of, you know, the ways of explaining, you know, yeah, yeah.
True.
I don't think it's just, it's not there.
Like, 俺, 僕, 俺だ。
俺だ。
Yeah, well, that's true.
In Japan, we struggle with that when we grow up, like, especially when we were, like, elementary kids.
We usually call ourselves, like, 僕 at the very beginning.
But at one moment, you have to turn it into 俺.
And that's when we struggle, like, should I say 俺 and jump into, like, changing it.
Yeah, yeah.
Are you nervous, like, the first time you say 俺?
Yeah, I remember that.
You do?
But first time was, like, 俺。
I called myself 俺.
Is that softer?
Yeah, that's softer.
That's, like, a kid version of 俺.
It's not that, like, that vibe.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Like, so the way I look at it, isn't 俺, like, a little bit too aggressive for all guys to go into?
In, like, a still age of, like, we are?
Well, yeah.
And also, when you guys have that wave of guys trying to change their 一人調, right?
Like, if you're the type of guy that, like, are, like, bad, or, like, the frat boys, or, like, you know, like, the イケイケ type.
I mean, it kind of, like, kind of goes along with the image.
Yeah, yeah.
But, like, I can imagine a lot of guys at the same time who are kind of a little bit, like, geeky or nerdy or, you know.
Not that, like, outgoing.
Yeah.
Kind of wouldn't really match the 俺.
True.
But, like, kind of too old for the 僕.
So, like, kind of you're, like, left out in the middle of nowhere.
Like, I don't know what to call myself.
That's true.
Does that really happen?
Is that there?
I think so.
That happens to some people.
So, that's why they start calling 祝いは...
You know.
They somehow try to, yeah, find how should I call myself.
Should I use 俺?
That's a bit, you know, too aggressive.
But 僕 is kind of too cute.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So, people start trying using, like, 俺だ.
You know, 足 or whatever, you know, whatever.
個人の言葉遣いの変化
And try to what suits you.
Yeah.
Right.
Right.
Wait, so, at what age, like, which grade do they start transitioning from 僕?
As far as I, the community I was in, so elementary, 僕, in around the third grade.
Okay.
三年生ぐらい, we changed into 俺.
Okay.
Yeah.
I mean, not everybody, but, like, a bit, like, sportive guys, outgoing guys, changing into 俺.
And then, like, around fifth grade, changed into 俺, the authentic 俺.
Oh, so, you had, like, two years of 俺.
Yeah.
Did everyone do that?
Not every everybody, but...
But a good amount of people.
Yeah.
Okay.
Yeah.
I didn't know that was a common thing.
Well, I mean, I'm not sure it's, like, common in whole Japan, but at least in my community, yeah.
So, people, 俺, about one or two years, and then start changing into 俺.
I see.
And after that junior high, we say 俺.
俺.
Yeah, that's 俺.
俺 俺 俺 俺.
And then, yeah, until, like, university, 俺 is the major, I think.
Okay.
Wait, what happens after university?
Some guy trying to call himself 僕.
Uh-huh.
Yeah, I can imagine that.
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
That happens.
So, they go back to 僕.
Yeah, some people back to 僕.
I did, actually.
I back into 僕 in certain period in university.
Yeah.
Because I felt 俺 is too aggressive, just like you said.
So, 僕, I felt 僕 fits more.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And I said 僕 a certain period in university.
But now, I changed into 俺, I think.
Oh, okay.
Yeah.
Yeah, right.
Yeah, that, you know, they're changing.
I see.
You know, it's interesting how the dynamic works.
Yeah, yeah.
Do you?
I use everything.
Oh, you use everything?
Yeah, I use 俺, I use 僕, I use 私.
Oh, how do you...
It just really depends on the situation.
Okay, okay.
Like, I really don't know.
You really don't know.
I don't have a rule.
Like, especially 僕 and 俺, that's more like, where's the line?
Yeah.
Well, that is more formal, right?
Yeah.
But like, yeah, 僕 and 俺, it's interchangeable in most situations.
So, I don't know how I'm kind of this, like, separating it.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Like, I'm using it, I'm using both.
Okay.
I notice myself.
Using two...
I just call myself 俺.
I just call myself 僕.
Yeah.
Wow.
I don't know how I'm doing it, but...
Yeah.
I think I have a, like, a weird kind of, like, a concept than average.
Yeah, I think so.
I was not in the environment.
Yeah, you came from the I world, so I guess...
Yeah, yeah.
They're all new to me.
Right, right, right.
Yeah.
Yeah, because to me...
So, if I'm in the period of calling myself as 俺, then suddenly, like, mistakenly,
I call sometimes myself as 僕, and that's very embarrassing to me.
Like, oh, no!
It's, like, this severe to me.
Oh, really?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
It's like you're that strict on your...
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
It's very 恥ずかしい to me.
Wow.
Yeah.
Wow.
Right, right, right.
It's not, like, as you, it's not, like, interchangeable to me.
Oh, okay.
It's, like, a different thing.
ケビンの言葉遣い
Yeah.
Wow.
Interesting.
Yeah.
Yeah.
All right.
There you go.
Thanks for listening, guys.
Thank you.
Bye-bye.
