Welcome to Kevin's English Room Podcast!
Hello!
I've come up with an idea from last episode.
Okay.
The fact that you can't stop laughing under a certain situation.
Mm-hmm.
So I'm going to do...
Can I do a little bit of a test here?
See if you laugh or not.
Of course.
Let's start.
I am going to count to 10.
Okay.
Your mission is to not laugh until I get to 10.
Oh, that's easy to me.
Really?
I can handle that.
Alright.
Are you ready, Ebon Sean?
Yeah.
Alright.
Ready?
Yeah, I'm ready.
Of course.
Yeah.
One.
Two.
Three.
Why are you counting too slowly?
No, that's...
You lost.
Yeah, I mean...
Okay.
Yeah.
But that's simply funny, you know?
Oh, counting slowly?
Counting too slow, that makes me...
Alright, I'll do it in a steady pace.
Yeah, okay.
Alright?
Okay.
With that.
Yeah, okay.
Of course.
With that jokan.
Yeah.
Okay.
Ready?
Yeah.
One.
Two.
Three.
Four.
Five.
Six.
Seven.
Eight.
Nine.
Ten.
Yes.
Yes.
Alright, you made it.
Yes.
But you were close though.
I felt it.
I felt your smile though.
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah.
Um.
Yeah.
True.
True.
Let's see, I'm kind of very relaxed.
Okay.
So...
There is no mistake, right?
Yeah.
So I guess...
Yeah.
Right.
No people around you.
Uh-huh.
And if I laugh, it's still okay.
Right, nothing's gonna happen.
Yeah.
We have to get more people that are more disturbed, more like meiwaku if you laugh.
Yeah.
Or like if I laugh, then we have to start again.
Uh-huh.
You know, record again.
Right.
Make it more challenging and like...
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah.
Got it, got it.
Let's see.
But you don't...
Please don't do that.
Okay.
I don't like that.
In that situation, things, um, looks much funnier.
Really?
Yeah.
Because so much is at stake.
I guess so.
Like, when you count slowly, that itself is...
See?
I got it.
That's not that funny.
It's not the situation funniness.
Yeah.
Just me being silly.
Yeah.
Counting slow and that factor, you know, looks funnier, much funnier.
Uh-huh.
Your voice start sounding funnier.
Uh-huh.
And you're staring at me counting numbers and that looks funnier.
Start looking funnier.
If you're under the circumstance of like so much at stake.
Yeah.
Right?
Okay, I see.
Yeah.
03:00
All right, I see.
Yeah.
Got it.
But I'm okay.
I'm okay right now.
See?
Okay.
So, um, this is from, uh, Yumie-san today.
Yumie-san?
All right.

That's interesting.
That's interesting.
So when we talk she can understand but when I'm just speaking I guess to the camera or
just talking about myself blabbering on it's hard to understand.
I agree with her.
Okay.
06:00
Not only you but there are some Japanese people who are fluently speaking English, good at
English, even they pronounce really close to like the native speakers.
Japanese, I mean fluent English by Japanese people are much easier to understand compared
to someone from the United States or United Kingdom.
So I understand that.
Okay.
But what I don't fully agree with is for example when I was in France the conversation between
people A and people B was really difficult to understand but if somebody speaks to me
that was really easy to understand.
So it's the opposite.
Yeah I guess so.
But my case was you know both were like native French people not Japanese people so maybe
that's why.
That's true.
Yeah.
Conversation was more difficult for me like conversation going on was difficult.
So was it do you think that the reason why you thought person A speaking to you, you
understood that more than the A and B conversation?
Is it because that do you think A was adjusting the vocabularies so that you'd understand?
Yeah that's one.
But sometimes they don't adjust at all.
They just speak naturally to me.
But still is maybe the reasons are maybe just they speak to me.
Okay got it.
It's just human interaction wise.
It's directed towards you.
That's why it's kind of easy to catch those conversations.
So maybe she was in the room and if I spoke to her directly it might be a different you
know dynamic right?
True.
Right right right right right.
Yeah like to me your English is really clear and really I guess clear and not really hard
to understand compared to.
See you have no strong accents or like you know if you compare to like southern American
guys or like North United Kingdom's people you know.
So Scotland.
Yeah something like that right?
Well I never understand Scottish.
09:02
Yeah.
But yeah.
Do you have those experiences?
Hmm.
No no yeah.
The question is the question you're asking me is have I ever had experience where I don't
I do understand the conversation between two people but not understanding it when one person
directly speaks to me right?
Yeah yeah.
No I'd never have that.
Hmm okay I don't think so.
Yeah okay.
Yeah okay.
If you think about that conversation between A and B are easier if you compare to one people
just like stating about himself or like just have kind of you know lecture.
I understand yeah.
See reading some things you know.
Right.
A little bit difficult.
Because it's they have their own pace right?
If it's just one person it's his own pace but if it's two like the pace gets average
like normalized.
True.
Like it's a higher possibility that the pace is closer to mine with two people so like
I feel like that's the logic there.
Yeah yeah yeah.
Haven't you ever like had any experiences like in Japanese like the conversation can
be really easy to understood but if I read like these messages difficult to understand
sometimes.
Yeah I yeah that happens yeah that happens like if I am so for example if I'm talking
with my zeirishi-san.
Yeah.
Right.
If I talk.
Yeah.
I don't understand at all that happens.
Yeah yeah yeah.
Probably because of the vocabularies though but maybe even the nuance too.
Yeah true.
Like a koro naka dasanakya ikenai datanaka like I don't know it's like is it a must or
is it like a is it like something that you can do is it something that.
Bitter.
Yeah this there's more information verbally for me versus reading it on a like a hardcore
document.
Yeah yeah true.
Yeah right.
Yeah.
Okay thanks for listening guys.
Thank you.
